SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- According to a recently-released autopsy, a combination of cocaine, alcohol and blunt chest impact caused a man to die during a punching game in March downtown.The medical examiner ruled the death of 27-year-old Corey Poole an accident Monday. According to authorities, Poole went out drinking at Jolt’n Joe’s downtown just before 1 a.m. with friends.Police said Poole and one of his friends then decided to have a punching contest. Poole and his friend then started “consensually sparring” and punching one another in the chest.RELATED: Man killed in Gaslamp Quarter punching game identifiedIt was then, according to police, that Poole fell to the ground and became unresponsive. Poole was taken to the hospital where he later died.Poole’s friend was also taken to the hospital for chest pain following the incident. 850

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A suspect accused of stabbing a man multiple times in a San Diego airport parking lot was nabbed at the border this week.San Diego Harbor Police said Alberto Moreno Jauregui, 18, was arrested Monday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in connection with the stabbing that occurred on Oct. 28 in San Diego International Airport's economy parking lot.RELATED: Man stabbed while defending wife during attempted carjacking at San Diego International AirportPolice said Jauregui, armed with a knife, approached a man and woman in the process of loading their vehicle, before grabbing the woman around her neck and demanding the keys to the vehicle. The man intervened, leading to a fight.During the fight, Jauregui stabbed the man multiple times before fleeing the scene, police said.The man was brought to a nearby hospital and treated. The woman was not injured.Jauregui was booked into San Diego County Jail and charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping, attempted carjacking and serious bodily injury.Jauregui is being held on no bail and is due in court on Nov. 9. 1112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A South Bay homeowner contacted Team 10, saying his homeowner’s association towed his car even though he has parked in the same spot for years.Cecilio Nazareno has lived in the Rolling Hills Ranch community since 2005. “It’s a nice neighborhood,” Nazareno said.He has never had any problems with his HOA until recently. Navarro went on vacation with his wife late last year for a couple weeks.He parked his car in front of his home, but when he returned it was gone. “We were shocked because my car… was missing,” Nazareno said.He thought it was stolen, but when he contacted property management, someone told him it was towed. “The person that I talked to knew it was my car. [He] said we towed your car because it was abandoned,” Nazareno said.The bill was more than 0. “It’s a lot of money for me, especially being retired,” the military veteran said.Navarro said there were two warnings on his windshield, but he obviously did not see it since he was out of the country. “Give us time to correct it. While you're on vacation and your car is parked, you don't have time,” Nazareno said.Team 10 contacted the property management company and got a response from Rolling Hills Ranch Community Association. General Manager Haley Murphy cited a rule that said certain vehicles cannot “remain parked on any street adjacent to the Property for more than twenty-four (24) continuous hours.”However, Team 10 found the rule was for oversized vehicles, not regular sized cars.Murphy then pointed out a different rule: “Any vehicles which would be considered abandoned over 72 hours are subject to regulations… and vehicles that can’t be driven must be kept in the garage or removed.” “I said, how can you say abandoned? I used that car and parked here since 2005,” Nazareno said.“When I was in the military I would leave it here for weeks on out.” Team 10 asked why Navarro was being towed now.Murphy would not answer that specific question, but cited yet another rule that said: “Any vehicle parked for more than 72 hours in the same space is subject to tow with no further notice.” Murphy said that because he lives in “the gated section of the community with private streets,” there are additional restrictions on parking. Nazareno said he, along with several of his neighbors, have never seen this rule.Attorney Dan Zimberoff is not affiliated with the case, but sees a lot of issues similar to Nazareno’s situation. “It’s really the three P’s you see a lot. Pets, poop, and parking,” Zimberoff said.He said it is in the interest of both sides to resolve issues before it goes to court. One way is mediation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid Coronavirus c oncerns a Holland America cruise ship took off Saturday from the Port of San Diego on a 7-day trip to Mexico.Passengers boarding the cruise said for the most part they weren't concerned.Some added Holland America had been emailing them updates on precautions the cruise line is taking and what passengers should do to stay healthy.Holland America sent this list of precautions to 10News:Guests who have traveled from or through mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau, or had contact with a suspected or confirmed case of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) or a person who is under monitoring for coronavirus in the last 14 days prior to sailing will not be permitted to board the ship. Pre-Boarding medical evaluations, including temperature checks, for persons whom, for any reason, appear or identify as symptomatic (respiratory or fever symptoms); and For all guests, our standard pre-boarding health reporting advising of their reporting obligations for any illness or symptoms of an illness.Medical screening for Coronavirus on all guests who visit our onboard Medical Center with symptoms of any respiratory illness.Reporting to local and national health authorities of all cases of fever and respiratory illness, and any patients with suspected Coronavirus infection. Crew members from mainland China will be delayed from joining any ship until further notice. Individuals with limited reading skills will have a hard time finding employment and suffer even more financially. That's why leaders in literacy are trying to encourage children to develop a love for reading before the age of 8, and before it's too late. Amelia Sandoval is a prime example of how things can spiral out of control without the ability to read. "I didn't read, not at all," says Sandoval talking about her childhood. There were problems at home. She was never read to, and school was never a priority. Without reading comprehension, the domino effect was already in motion.San Diego County Office of Education resources:100 books with strong connections to equity"I joined a gang, I hung out, I was on the streets," says Sandoval. "We learned to ditch the cops." By the time she was 18, Amelia was in the state prison for women in Chowchilla, where she spent five years. Her inability to read was her shame, and a secret she kept to herself."Just as good as I was at stealing stuff, I was good at hiding this," says Sandoval wiping away tears. "I had to protect the secret. It was the best secret I kept from everybody."But experts claim Amelia's path in life is one that's completely avoidable."60 percent of low-income children have no books at home," says Jose Cruz. "Student A" who reads just 20 minutes a day will read the equivalent of 1.8 million words in a school year, building an extensive vocabulary. But "Student B" who reads only five minutes a day will have read less than 2 percent of that amount. And "Student C" who only reads a minute a day is severely limited in vocabulary and literacy. "You just need to read and talk with your kids," says Cherissa Kreider-Beck. She is unwavering in her claim that literacy starts at home and has recommended book lists. "At the state, we're about 50 percent, so the county outperforms the state a little bit, but those numbers aren't okay. We can't be okay with those results." "If a child is not reading at grade level by age 8 or 9, the odds of them catching up are 3-1 against them," adds Cruz.
