BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's express delivery topped 10 million pieces per day as of the end of 2010, ranking the third most deliveries in the world, the State Post Bureau (SPB) said on Tuesday.Some 2.4 billion pieces were handled in 2010, an increase of 1.5 times from five years ago. Also, revenues jumped two fold from the level in 2005 to 57.3 billion yuan (8.68 billion U.S. dollars) last year.Despite the increase, China's per capita figure was less than two pieces per day, less than the international average of 4.1 pieces.SPB vowed to improve the policy environment to facilitate industry innovations and build competitive enterprises in the global market.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday discussed the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula in phone calls with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara.The discussions follow an artillery exchange between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in waters off the west coast of the divided peninsula on Tuesday.During the conversations, Yang said safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula served the common interests of concerned parties.Those parties should call on the DPRK and South Korea to exercise calmness and restraint and hold dialogue and make contacts, and not to take actions that would escalate the conflict, he said.He said all parties should work together to help cool the situation as soon as possible and effectively ensure no repeat of such conflict.Meanwhile, the Chinese minister expressed the hope that concerned parties would take a reasonable and pragmatic approach to actively create favorable conditions for resuming the six-party talks.The parties should also commit themselves to establish related mechanisms at an early date to eliminate various factors threatening peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole region.Lavrov said Russia agreed with China on the latest situation and was ready to keep close contact with China to help defuse the tensions on the peninsula and create conditions for a restart of the six-party talks.Maehara said that Japan is willing to work together with China to jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and push forward the denuclearization process of the Peninsula.During Tuesday's incident, shells landed on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island near the contentious sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). NANJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A court in east China's Jiangsu Province sentenced a man to death and another to life in prison Friday for illegally raising up to 4 billion yuan (606 million U.S. dollars) in a fraudulent investment scheme.Another 11 suspects were given jail terms ranging from two-and-a-half to 10 years for collusion in the fraud, which caused losses of 650 million yuan (98 million dollars) to 14,822 investors, the Intermediate People's Court in the provincial capital, Nanjing, said in a statement.According to the statement, Sun Haiyu and Hu Zhen jointly set up a company, Nanjing Runzai Biology Co., Ltd. in January 2004 and began soliciting investments from the public in the name of planting glossy ganoderma, or reishi mushrooms, which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.The judge said the company exaggerated its profits in planting glossy ganoderma and fraudulently claimed that the investment was risk free.The duo, together with 11 accomplices, raised more than 4 billion yuan from April 2004 to July 2008.Sun was sentenced to death for the crime of illegal fund-raising by fraudulent means, while Hu was sentenced to life imprisonment.

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed the hope that the pricing difference on natural gas imported from Russia would be narrowed through joint efforts from both sides.Gu Jun, deputy director-general of the National Energy Administration's international department, made the remarks at a news briefing on Premier Wen Jiabao's upcoming visit to Russia and Tajikistan.Though companies from both sides had made many efforts in this regard, a certain difference still existed in the pricing of natural gas imported from Russia, Gu said, calling for additional sincerity to be demonstrated on the pricing talks by the two sides.Talks on this issue will be also a part of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan's upcoming visit to Russia, she said.In 2009, Russia inked a framework agreement with China on annually supplying at most 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China, but they still did not reach an agreement on the supplying price.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will pay official visits to Russia and Tajikistan from Nov. 22 to 25 at the invitation of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Tajikistan Prime Minister Akil Akilov.During the visits, Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the 15th Chinese-Russian prime ministers meeting and the ninth prime ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
