But he's won an ugly one.The bug-eyed, dreadlocked pooch took top honors Friday night at the 31st annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest.Owner Yvonne Morones of Santa Rosa, California, won an appearance with Scamp on the "Today" show, ,500 in cash, another ,500 to donate to an animal shelter — and a trophy the size of a Rottweiler."He's Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp," Morones told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat after the victory. Tostito, owned by Molly Horgan of Falmouth, Maine, also won the Spirit Award.This year's People's Choice Award went to Meatloaf, a bulldog mix with protruding teeth owned by Denae Pruner of Sacramento, California.Everyone knows ugliness is in the eye of the beholder and, to a dog lover, there is no such thing as an uncomely canine. Weird-looking, maybe. Appearance-challenged, perhaps. Or, as owners of ugly dogs like to say, "unique."Like Willie Wonka, a sweet-natured pit bull abandoned after he was discovered to have a genetic malady that left his legs so bowed he could barely walk.With a chuckle, publicist Christy Gentry said the competition wasn't just about being ugly."Judges are looking for special attributes like hanging tongues, slobber, drool (the more the better). Maybe unusual patches of skin or hair," she explained.Last year's champion, an English bulldog named Zsa Zsa, with a tongue that hung nearly to the ground, endeared herself to the judges when she sneezed and drooled all over them.Soon she was headed to New York for national TV appearances. Sadly, Zsa Zsa died about a year ago at age 9.Another previous winner, Nana, made the cover of an album by the Grateful Dead spinoff band Ratdog.Organizers say the contest isn't just skin-deep. It's also about bringing attention to the needs of rescue dogs.Most competitors were previously abandoned or rescued from kill shelters in the U.S., found abandoned on streets or seized from unscrupulous breeders."What we're really doing is we're showcasing dogs that have been rescued and adopted and brought into loving homes," Gentry said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candidates, who are looking to unseat Congressman Duncan Hunter, are feeling emboldened as his trial grows near. This week, the Congressman’s wife took a plea deal with prosecutors, in which she has agreed to testify against her husband in the trial scheduled for Sept. 16. Several candidates had already made plans to run in 2020 against before prosecutors flipped his wife, and they are now watching to see what unfolds in court. Many of the candidates have begun fundraising efforts, and some say donations to their campaign have ramped up in the past few days. Many currently vying for the District 50 seat are Republicans within Hunter’s party, like El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells who ran against Hunter in 2018. “I think my chances are now even better, I lot of people know me more,” Wells said. “A lot of people, they wanted to vote for me last time but felt conflicted about the Duncan Hunter situation.” Temecula council member Matt Rahn, who is also eyeing Hunter’s seat, expects to gain some of his followers as the trial goes on. “I expect to see some change in the folks that are showing interest as we see this case evolve and unfold but right now, we have a solid base,” Rahn said. A conviction won’t remove Hunter from office. It will take a two-thirds House vote to do that. However, if he survives the trial, there's likely going to be some political fallout. That gives Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar confidence he can turn the district blue. “I think people are going to be willing to put country over party and look past the 'D' next to my name. SAN MARCOS, Calif (KGTV) - A North County military veteran and Cal State San Marcos student is spearheading an effort to expand a veterans remembrance wall in San Marcos. The wall stands at Helen Bougher Memorial Park, and it was funded and put up by a veterans group in 2009, but spots filled-up close after about two years. The open spaces left on the wall now are reserved for POWs and those KIA or MIA. "Unfortunately, I was the one that had to tell all the veterans and their families that there was no room left on the wall, which was unacceptable," said Heidi Rassat, a co-founder for the remembrance wall. Jason Beyer said he believes he was the last to purchase a tile before requests were capped. Now, the ex-Marine is on a mission to add more spaces to the wall. "I think about my co-workers who have passed away, and doing this project keeps their memory alive for me," Beyer said, adding veterans should have the opportunity to be remembered. "They should have this space for their loved ones to remember them, to remember their service, remember their sacrifice," he said. Beyer started a group called the San Marcos Veterans Memorial Initiative. Beyer is also a student at CSU San Marcos, and he has gotten art students involved in designing a way to free up or add spaces to the existing wall. They hope to give design concepts to the city and hopefully begin fundraising next year. "The City of San Marcos is proud to honor our veterans, and we look forward to considering potential proposals for enhancing the memorial," said City Manager Jack Griffin. You've probably heard the saying before that dogs and their owners look alike. Now, new research says their personalities end up matching, too!Dog owner Michael Wolz says he shares similar personality traits to his 9-year-old golden doodle, Jack. "He's a big, lazy guy. Likes to lay around,” Wolz describes of Jack. “He likes to bounce off the walls when he gets a chance, too. But other than that, he's just trying to take it easy." A new study out by Michigan State University found that it's actually very common for pet owners and their dogs to take on each other’s personalities. Pet owner Annie Ernst feels she and her dog, Harper, are one in the same. "I always want to be in the know about everything and be involved and go up to people and say hi, and she is the same way," Ernst says. Ernst says her and Harper were compatible from the start. "I feel like she picked us," she says. Both Ernst and Wolz say they love sharing similar personality traits with their dogs and feels it brings them closer together. 1033
