SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A tour this weekend will give San Diegans a chance to see all of the options they have to make their homes more energy-efficient and climate-friendly.The San Diego Green Homes Tour features 14 houses, all with unique ways to go green."We have a variety of homes from luxury and do it yourself tactics that everyday people can employ," says tour Co-Chair Katie Teare. "We're hoping people that attend the tour can learn and be inspired to put some of these techniques into their own home."Among the options, a home that is entirely off-the-grid and run by solar power, a home built from straw bales, a home that turned the backyard pool into a pond, and several homes that are LEED-certified as among the most energy-efficient.RELATED: Photos of energy efficient homes in San Diego (Slide Show)"If you're going to be building a new house it just seems like the right thing to do," says Kristin Brinner, whose newly built Solana Beach home is part of the tour. "We have a daughter, and we're really concerned about climate change and the world she's coming into, so we want to do everything we can to minimize our impacts."Brinner's home features solar power, a grey-water system, and a driveway that percolates water and pushes it to their yard instead of into storm drains.She and her husband took the tour three years ago to get inspiration as they started to design their new home."It might cost a little more to buy a nicer system, but if you look at the cost over time, since they're so efficient, you get back a return on the money," says Brinners husband, Chris Novak.Bill Powers agrees. He set up his home with a fully self-contained solar power system in 2014. He says it's time that these kinds of renovations become the standard, not the exception."This isn't fringe stuff. This is something you can do if you'd like to do and give you the flexibility to protect your own home when the grid's not available," says Powers.The tour is on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets to tour the homes are for both days or for one day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second person has died and three children remain hospitalized after a fire tore through a Logan Heights home Sunday morning. The family’s oldest son told 10News his mother and father, who he identified as Nicolasa Mayo and Jose Romero, were killed in the fire. His two younger sisters and brother remain in the hospital following the blaze. The 26-year-old says he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man tells 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home. "My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.The fire started around 4:30 Sunday morning on the 3100 block of Clay Street. "The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. The curtain was open and I looked across the neighbors house was just bursting in flames," said Maria Orona, who lives nearby. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out. One witness who was nearby when the fire started told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through bars in the windows, unable to escape.At least three fire engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze.At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire, but the metro arson strike team was called to the home to investigate.A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help cover funeral expenses. 1541

"The programs that we have here at Fuerte are really empowering the students to think differently. They are really empowering them to challenge the adults to rethink education," said Kristen Goodrich, Principal of Fuerte Elementary. Through various activities, students discover which of six personality traits fits them best and the careers that could be a good match.It's called the RIASEC Model:RealisticInvestigativeArtisticSocialEnterprisingConventionalOn Tuesday, education and state leaders toured schools in the district as part of the ExcelinEd 2019 National Summit on Education Reform. "I jumped at the opportunity because it sounds like there's a lot of things going right here," said Wendy Horman, an Idaho State Representative. World of Work students receive hands-on experiences, meet a professional in the career, and practice skills needed in that career.By fourth grade, students are creating resumes, and by fifth, they're applying for jobs and doing interviews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 125 years serving San Diego customers Jessop's Jewelry store is closing down. Owner Jim Jessop tells 10News it was a decision several years in the making and one that is definitely bittersweet. All three of his sons opted not to take over and he didn't want to sell a business with such strong family ties. Jessop's dates back to the late 1800's when Jim's great grandfather opened the first store. He also designed the iconic clock which is now on display at Horton Plaza.Jessop says he doesn't have a firm closing date, he will simply stay open until he's sold the last piece of jewelry. Property owners at Horton have asked Jessop to move the clock, so he is now in the process of looking for another location that will preserve the timepiece. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 70 members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team in San Diego helped in the recovery effort after 9/11. Wednesday, they remembered the tragedy and reflected on how firefighting has changed in years since.On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked two planes and flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Nearly 3,000 lives were taken. The work that followed days later brought in crews from around the country."On the pile is even more daunting than being off of it and figuring out where you've been and where you've looked and where's the potential to find someone who might still be alive," Battalion Chief Matt Nilsen said.Nilsen was sent to New York to set up communications, using his mechanical engineering degree. He returned to the West Coast with an unforgettable experience."Everybody wanted to do something to help and I was fortunate to have a job that was doing that," Nilsen said. Back home, he said firefighting has changed."It used to be a big thing that the dirtier your gear is, the saltier you are. Now it's the cleaner your gear are, is the smarter way to be," he said. In the years since the attack, the team focuses more on cancer prevention and how their gear plays an important role in that focus."When we go to a structure fire, when we go there, when we went to the World Trade Center, in all those circumstances you get exposed and once you have it on your body, it's the prolonged exposure that can contribute more to it," Nilsen said, speaking of the toxins that firefighters face on the job.While the phrase "We Will Never Forget" is tied to the historic date, 18 years later there are many who don't know or understand the impact of 9/11, like those who were in New York."We do need to remember the lessons from this, and remember how we came together as a country after this attack," Nilsen said. 1889
