SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare.Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. At least, I personally hope we aren't..."So we have to find a way to hopefully keep businesses alive and still provide the interaction and the hospitality and the food and beverage that people want and need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department released several videos of a deadly shooting that occurred after a pursuit ended in Chula Vista.The shooting took place after a pursuit that started in Orange County around midnight on Oct. 4. The suspect of the chase, identified as Christopher Ulmer, 33, of Whitter, Calif., led officers to Chula Vista, where authorities stopped his vehicle using a pit maneuver on I-805 south near Orange Avenue at about 1 a.m.Police say Ulmer exited his vehicle and pointed his arm at officers who believed he was holding a firearm, prompting officers to fire their service weapons. Officers say Ulmer got back up and pointed at officers again, prompting a second round of gunfire.RELATED: Pursuit suspect shot by law enforcement on I-805 in Chula Vista identifiedUlmer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.Video released by the Sheriff's Department showed a photo of a black, cylindrical object found underneath Ulmer's body that authorities believed to have been a gun before they fired their weapons.The CHP officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant John Holm who has been employed for 22 years, Officer Pakko Mendez who has been employed for 11 years, officer Javier Mendoza who has been employed for seven years, and officer Lauren Chi who has been employed for three years.RELATED: Authorities identify officers involved in deadly South Bay shootingThe San Diego Police officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant Michael Pidgeon who has been employed for 26 years, and officer Patrick Harvey who has been employed for seven years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Californians gathered Saturday night across the state to protest the newest restrictions put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Last Saturday, Syndie Ly helped organize the first "Curfew Breakers" rally. "Across 16 cities, we had 10,000 people show up," she said.Ly lives in Huntington Beach and said in four days their Facebook page "blew up."She said people are frustrated by the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. saying it is an overreach, "when the government starts telling you when you can leave the house, how many people you can invite over to your own home."What's happening in the U.S. reminds her of when her family escaped in Vietnam."I was born in China and my parents emigrated to Vietnam, and we came here [to the U.S.] legally but we came here as refugees to escape North Vietnam during the fall of Vietnam ... Just being told what to do, a lot of the government overreach, I feel we're actually on the brink of getting back to that and that's why I'm involved in this," said Ly.She said between layoffs and businesses being forced to close, the impact on people's livelihoods is worse than the virus itself."It's our lives, and we feel we are responsible individuals that can make our own decisions," Ly said.The rallies will continue every Saturday, starting at 10:01 p.m. until Ly and the organizers see change, she added.In San Diego, a rally is planned for Saturday at 10:01 p.m. at 910 N. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is increasing staffing ahead of Santa Ana winds expected to swirl around the county to start the work week. On Sunday, 10News got a hands-on tour of Station 14 in North Park. It is one of five San Diego Fire stations with an engine, ladder truck, and now a fully staffed brush truck for the next two days. "Our brush rigs are always able to be covered," San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said. "We just have to un-staff a rig to move over to it. In this case, those rigs are actually covered right now, and they can all go."Because of the upcoming Santa Ana winds, the Department is staffing 25 additional crew members, specifically for wildfires. While engines and ladder trucks are most commonly used in day-to-day operations, the 0,000 brush truck is on a league of its own."It's imperative that we are able to make access quickly into areas where the engine cannot get into," Fire Engineer, Tim Swanson said. "And that's why we have these brush rigs."Unlike the concrete jungle in New York City, the City of San Diego has many different kinds of terrain. Because of that, in the academy, all firefighters are trained in all three truck types: engine, ladder, and brush.The brush truck has off-road tires, a 600-gallon tank, and specialized tools like backfire canisters, burn-over protection, and this triple hose backpack. The truck may even become a mobile home for the crew. That is why it has comfortable seats and carries household items. "If we're out on a strike team, we are gone for sometimes two weeks at a time with little to no ground support," Swanson said. "So, we need to be self-sufficient for two weeks."Even if fires do not erupt in our area, they are always ready to go."Sometimes, when [Northern California] is asking for help, we have to do it," Deputy Chief Zombro said. "And we just have to up our game down here to make sure we stay covered, and we've always done that."After two days, the department will re-assess to see if they need to continue the increased staffing.
