SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people are dead after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria linked to black tar heroin use in San Diego.County health officials said nine people who injected black tar heroin were admitted to county hospitals between Oct. 2 and Nov. 24 with a bacterial infection called myonecrosis, which is a severe soft tissue infection that destroys muscle. Of those victims, seven have died. The patients range in age from 19 to 57 years old.RELATED: Sixth death reported during San Diego's current flu season“People who use black tar heroin are not only at higher risk of dying from an overdose, but also more prone to developing myonecrosis and wound botulism,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. One confirmed case of wound botulism linked to black tar heroin use was also reported in October — the first confirmed case in the county this year.Wound botulism, which attacks the body’s nerves, is also linked to heroin use. People who inject illicit narcotics like black tar heroin are at a higher risk of developing both infections, the county says. Last year, seven cases of wound botulism were reported in the county.RELATED: Dozens arrested after drug bust in East VillageIn Southern California, 13 probable and confirmed wound botulism cases — most of them linked to black tar heroin — have been reported since Sept. 1, the county says. The source of the black tar heroin linked to the infections is unknown and officials are currently investigating. Additional cases may be reported.Symptoms of severe myonecrosis can include severe pain; pale skin that quickly turns gray, dark red, purple, or black; foul-smelling blisters; fever; and increased heart rate. Severe instances can spread throughout the body and cause shock, leading to amputations or death if untreated.People who are experiencing drug addiction or substance use disorders are encouraged to seek help through the county's crisis line at 888-724-7240. 1955

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some of our toughest Marines have four legs. These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. Lucca retired after losing her leg to an IED and passed away in 2018."They're special, in my mind, they're special. They love to work, they love coming to work, they love seeing their handler, they love getting in that patrol car, they love putting that collar on - and they're just always happy, these dogs live in the moment," said Evers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Since the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida last month, the San Diego County District Attorney's office has seen 19 cases of local school threats.Nine juveniles so far have been charged criminally, according to District Attorney Summer Stephan."We can't assume that the threat is a joke," Stephan said.Stephan said that even though there is not an intent to carry out a school shooting, the person behind a social media threat could face a felony charge if they determine there is an intent to cause fear.Students could receive consequences ranging from custody time, community service, additional mental health services, restorative justice, or access to social media taken away ordered by a judge.San Diego County school threat timeline:"When they hear the judge mention taking their social media away, you can see their faces change over that," Stephan said. "It's important that parents and [the] community really talk to their kids."Stephan said investigators look at a number of factors when determining which cases rise to the level of charges."We have to look at do they have access to weapons? Have they acquired weapons recently? Have they visited websites that indicate a fascination with school shootings and violence?" Stephan said.Of the 19 cases, Stephan said eight cases "did not rise to the level" of criminal charges. However, she said they will work with the minor and the family to prevent a similar situation in the future. A couple of the other cases are still under investigation. 1533

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several San Diegans are celebrating after catching a more than 300 pound Tuna off the San Diego Coast. The biggest catch, a 321 bluefin tuna, was caught by San Diego local Andy Khwa and Robbie Ortiz from Santa Barbara. The massive catch happened during a three-day trip aboard the Aztec Sportfishing’s Aztec vessel. RELATED: Giant tuna caught off coast of San Diego"This was hands down the best fishing we’ve ever seen on the Aztec. We were on a 3 Day trip with 24 passengers and caught over 400 bluefin and Yellowfin. Our standouts were 321 pound, 298 pound, and 292 pound Bluefin tuna,” Captain Greg Gawitt said.“We broke our personal record of a 311 pound bluefin in 2017. The smile on our passengers faces was priceless! We are headed back out this morning and can’t wait to do it again."This isn’t the first time fishermen aboard the vessel made a record-breaking catch. In October of 2017, the crew pulled up a Pacific Bluefin tuna that weighed 310 pounds. 990
