CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- A California Highway Patrol Officer who lost family members in a DUI crash is sharing his story with local students.Tuesday, students saw a graphic and emotional scene play out right before their eyes. Authorities hope it might make them think twice before drinking and driving.The mock DUI crash played out on the field at Sage Creek High School and it all looked very real. The aftermath of a drunk driving crash, fellow classmates injured or dead and one of their own eventually arrested for getting behind the wheel.For CHP Officer Mark Latulippe, the program, called Every 15 Minutes, takes on an ever greater meaning this year.A few months ago, his cousin Scott Latulippe, Scott’s wife and son were hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver in Austin, Texas. Scott was a well-known teacher at Valley Center High School.The message at the event Tuesday was lives forever changed because of drinking and driving. The sentiment was echoed by Officer Latulippe who says his family’s story, although tragic, is all too common.The program will continue at Sage Creek High School Wednesday with a mock funeral and presentation from Officer Latulippe. 1190

(KGTV) — Joining Oceanside and California state beaches, Carlsbad city officials announced Friday that they will close beach parking lots for the July 4 weekend.The city says that beach parking lots will be closed July 4 and 5 in Carlsbad, over concerns of crowds from counties where beaches are closed traveling to the region.Carlsbad's decision comes after a letter from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and days after Oceanside instituted a similar beach parking closure.RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendEarlier this week, San Diego County Supervisors said they did not plan to mandate county beaches to close and would leave it up to cities to decide themselves."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," Cal OES wrote in a letter to the cities of San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. CARLSBAD, Calif., (KGTV) -- Nearly 200 active duty mothers and mothers who support active duty staff at Camp Pendleton, got a full day of pampering at the 12th Annual Military Mother's Day Brunch. 10News spoke to the Torres family. "Right now, Daddy's deployed," mother, Sonia Torres said. While her husband defends the country as Sgt. Major of Batallion 1-4, she defends the homefront as she cares for her two children, Jasmine and Al."My mom means the world to me. She does everything for me. Cook, kisses me good night, everything," 11-year-old Al said.With no family nearby, military mothers like Torres are in a unique parenting situation. They play the roles of both mom and dad. "Since Daddy left, we needed something to fill that void, and we found Tae Kwon Do. We [Al] went from white belt to yellow belt to orange belt, Friday night." Torres said proudly.They often witness milestones alone. Jasmine celebrated her 13th birthday yesterday. "My mom is well, there's no words to describe it. She's always there for me. I couldn't really ask more than that," Jasmine said. So they don't. The Torres children will spend the rest of their lives being Mama's Girl and Mama's Boy."When I'm in university or college, I would be really close to her because she's my number one fan," Al said. CARLSBAD (CNS) - The Army and Navy Academy agreed to pay .75 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a former cadet at the Carlsbad-based military school, where the cadet was allegedly sexually assaulted in 1999, the law firm representing the cadet announced today.The civil suit, filed by Irvine-based law firm Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, alleged that 60-year-old Jeffrey Barton, who was an administrator in charge of academics at the academy, molested the cadet when he was a ninth-grader in 1999, the law firm said in a statement.The lawsuit alleged that Barton drugged the cadet in May 1999 and sodomized him in a bathroom on campus.In a criminal case involving the cadet, Barton was convicted in June 2017 of five felony counts of oral copulation and one felony county of sodomy.He was sentenced to 48 years in prison in August 2017.Manly, Stewart & Finaldi also represented a former cadet of the Carlsbad-based academy in a separate civil suit in 2017.
