BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Vice President Xi Jinping's visit to Singapore, South Africa, Angola and Botswana on Nov.14-24 achieved the goals of "consolidating traditional friendship, expanding strategic mutual trust, deepening substantial cooperation and boosting common development," Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said Wednesday.The visit, which was conducted on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, has been given prominence by local and international media, Zhai said.During the visit, Xi exchanged views with the heads of states and governments and parliament leaders of the four nations and summed up the experience and achievements in the development of their bilateral ties.He met with people from all walks of life and attended a series of signing ceremonies of bilateral cooperative agreements on trade, energy, finance and culture, Zhai said.Xi also addressed a reception marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore and gave a speech at the opening ceremony of a seminar on the 10th anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.During a stopover in Spain's Balearic Island Mallorca on his way home, Xi met Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez with whom he exchanged views on China-Spain and China-Europe relations.The Chinese vice president also met with representatives from local embassies, Chinese enterprises, Chinese medical teams and overseas Chinese people and students.Great achievements have been made during Xi's visit which was compact but effective and pragmatic, Zhai said.

He also called for closer cooperation on the APEC Low-Carbon Model Town Project.Fourthly, Hu said it was necessary to encourage innovative growth.The president asked the APEC members to facilitate the cultivation and movement of innovative and high-skilled people, who could provide strong human capital and scientific and technological support for economic development, and promote a shift toward innovation-driven growth."Developed members of APEC should scale up technology transfer and help developing members build capacity for innovative growth," Hu said.Fifthly, Hu said APEC members should work to ensure secure growth to protect the results of economic development, calling for furthering exchanges and cooperation in counter-terrorism, disaster prevention and reduction, food security, energy and resources security and public health.The annual Economic Leaders' Meeting is the top decision-making body of the APEC forum. HONG KONG, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said on Saturday the government will not slack off in its fight against drugs, despite a 20 percent drop in the number of drug abusers aged below 21 in the first half of this year.Speaking at the 2010 Fight Crime Conference, Tsang said both the government and the community attach great importance to drug problems.Although the government's efforts in beating drugs have started to deliver results, it will not slack off and will continue to allocate money to anti-drug programs, he said.Praising law-enforcement officers' professionalism in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong, Tsang said the city's crime rate continued to stay at a low level.According to Chief Secretary Henry Tang, Hong Kong's crime situation for the year's first 10 months remained stable, with overall crime dropping 3.2 percent.

  

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to the United States is vital to pushing forward bilateral ties, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhang Yesui said Saturday.In an interview with Chinese journalists in Washington, Zhang said this year marks the 40th anniversary of the rapprochement between the two countries as well as the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century.Zhang noted that China-U.S. relationship is at a critical period, with two countries making strides in vigorously developing cooperation in various areas, while new challenges arise. At such a time, the visit of President Hu next week will be especially meaningful in pushing forward bilateral ties in the new era.China-U.S. relations have maintained general stability and achieved marked progress since the establishment of diplomatic ties, which has become one of the most important bilateral relations in the world, he said.The two countries have conducted constant communication and dialogues, maintained close economic and trade relations, witnessed frequent exchanges of personnel and enjoyed a wide range of cooperation fields. The two countries have far more common interests than disagreements, dialogue and cooperation is always the defining feature of this relationship, he added.Zhang said China and the United States have different domestic environment, social systems as well as historic and cultural identities. They are also at different stages of development. It is normal for the two sides to have different views and even divisions in certain issues.What is important is to take into account and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and resolve differences through dialogue and negotiations, he saidAmid deepened globalization with more pressing global challenges,Zhang said, China-U.S. ties needed to be viewed in a new perspective.
