VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The COVID-19 pandemic has hit communities hard in many different ways.A new survey shows it's also taken a toll on museums, with some not sure whether they'll be able to keep their doors open.At the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), you'd find all sorts of displays.The museum reopened in July after being closed roughly five months during the pandemic.“We've had just around 3,000 people come through the museum over the last three months,” Brad Tuggle, Director of Audience Development for Virginia MOCA, said. “Our museum is in a good spot relative to where it could be.”Tuggle told News 3 the museum had concerns at first.“There were a lot of furloughs with the museum; we went down to about 40% of our staff,” Tuggle said. “We didn't know if this pandemic was going to shut us down for three months or three years.”The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) surveyed museums to get a feel for impacts from the pandemic.“Anecdotally, we knew that museums were significantly impacted by the pandemic the second they had to close their doors,” AAM Director of Marketing and Communications Natanya Khashan said.Khashan told News 3 at least 750 museum directors responded to the survey in June.One-third of those responding were not confident they would be able to survive 16 months without additional financial relief, and 16% felt their organization was at a significant risk of permanent closure.AAM added, during the pandemic, 75% of museums stepped into roles as educators providing virtual education programs and experiences. Two-thirds of directors predicted cuts in education, programming, and other public services due to significant budget cuts.“It is really unfortunate, and the number isn't surprising because museums have to cut where they can in order to survive the impact of the pandemic,” Khashan said.Tuggle said funding from the City of Virginia Beach and other partners helped.“We had a lot of people on staff and the community that in that first month really stepped up,” he said.He added the museum also launched a virtual museum online for people during the pandemic.“It really gave us an avenue to get that artwork out to the world, which is what we're here for,” he said.As they continue on, Khashan hopes many will support other museums around the country during this time.“Their communities are going to need their museums more than ever to help sustain their economies and their educational systems, and to provide respite and healing as we look towards the recovery in the future,” she said.This story was first reported by Zak Dahlheimer at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2633

Volunteers and law enforcement combed the side of a highway on Thursday looking for evidence in the disappearance of a missing Wisconsin teenager whose parents were found dead in their home this week.But the search along Highway 8 in Barron County, Wisconsin, didn't turn up anything of value, according to Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald.Hours earlier, Fitzgerald asked for 100 volunteers to help in the routine search for evidence that could be related to the case as the search for Jayme Closs entered its fourth day.The Federal Bureau of Investigations has added the teenager to its top missing persons list, KMSP television station reports. 660

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The man who tried to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in front of her Encinitas home was sentenced Monday to seven years in jail.Jeremiah Owens, 28, grabbed the girl and pinned her to the ground as she waxed her surfboard in front of her home on Neptune Ave in July 2017.Owens tried to drag the girl to a nearby pickup truck occupied by Christopher White, but the girl was able to break free and run home.White was arrested two days after the assault when a witness matched his pickup truck to the description of one which deputies wanted to find. WASHINGTON — An Associated Press investigation has identified at least six sexual misconduct allegations involving senior FBI officials over the past five years, including two new claims brought this week by women who say they were sexually assaulted by ranking agents.The AP found several of the accused FBI officials were quietly transferred or retired, keeping their full pensions even when probes substantiated the sexual misconduct claims.Beyond that, federal law enforcement officials are afforded anonymity even after the disciplinary process runs its course, allowing them to land on their feet in the private sector or even remain in law enforcement.According to the AP's report, one FBI assistant director retired after he was accused of groping a female subordinate in a stairwell. Another official was found to have credibly harrassed eight employees, and another agent retired after he was accused of blackmailing an employee into sexual encounters."They're sweeping it under the rug," said a former FBI analyst who alleges in a new federal lawsuit that a supervisory special agent licked her face and groped her at a colleague's farewell party in 2017. "As the premier law enforcement organization that the FBI holds itself out to be, it's very disheartening when they allow people they know are criminals to retire and pursue careers in law enforcement-related fields.""They need a #MeToo moment," said Rep. Jackie Speier, D-California. "It's repugnant, and it underscores the fact that the FBI and many of our institutions are still good ol’-boy networks.
