SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students struggling silently with hunger and homelessness might be surprised to find out they're not alone.A CSU-wide study found that 40 percent of its students don't know where their next meal is coming from, and 10 percent don't have a stable place to sleep.It's an issue San Diego State University is working to tackle.This week they held the campuses first Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week on campus. On Tuesday they held a resource fair and on Wednesday a mass-enrollment for CalFresh, the federal program which provides food benefits to low-income applicants.“It’s hard enough as it is being a student and to compound that with being hungry or dealing with housing and security, it really hits me," said Sarah Feteih, an SDSU student getting her masters in social work.Feteih is also an intern with the campus Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT), which works to tackle these issues on campus every day.“We’re encountering students that are sleeping in their cars because they can’t afford to live anywhere else, or they don’t know where their next meal is going to come from because they’re choosing between paying for their textbooks or paying for their groceries that week," said Feteih.Over a dozen county workers were on campus helping students enroll in CalFresh. The process was streamlined, getting students in-and-out within a half-hour and allowing them to bypass the required phone interview.“I think the real stress comes from the fact that I can't eat right," said SDSU senior, Calvin Yeh-Tinetti. "I'm definitely buying a lot of food that are canned foods, which are probably not the healthiest but are really cheap.”Yeh-Tinetti was one of the dozens of students who applied for CalFresh on Wednesday. 1772
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next great food craze could come from the waters of the San Diego Bay. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay. They'll get 4,000 square feet of water off the end of the Grape Street Pier to use for their plants.RELATED: Drone testing gives boost to Chula Vista economyIt's part of the Port's "Blue Economy" project, which is designed to help incubate new businesses along the waterfront."San Diego needs to take notice of the ocean economy," says Port CEO Rafel Castellanos. "We're incredibly optimistic, we believe in ocean optimism, and we're looking forward to really developing this sector."The seaweed industry can be incredibly lucrative. "They're wildly supportive of using kelp and seaweed in their dishes."The farm will be entirely underwater and be filled with several species of seaweed. "Right now it's just a muddy-bottomed area by a pier. Hopefully, in a year's time, we'll see a nice little ecosystem while also creating an economy around that." 1718
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The first new hospital tower in 40 years in the South Bay could have a major impact addressing a shortage of beds in the region, officials say. Sharp Health Care is set to open its 106 bed Ocean View Tower this week in central Chula Vista. It is adjacent to the 243 bed Sharp Chula Vista original tower, which has seen an overflow due to a growing South Bay with too much demand for health care. "There's about 4,000 new homes in this area that have been built, so more and more we are going to have to provide health care for that population," said Pablo Velez, the hospital's chief executive. While the South Bay has experienced rapid growth, most of the new hospitals have been constructed in North San Diego, where there are higher paying patients, Velez said. At an open house Saturday, more than one thousand South Bay residents got a first look inside the hospital. Each room will be private, with big screen high definition televisions, large bathrooms, USB ports in beds, and local art. The hospital boasts a top floor cafeteria and large family waiting rooms. "I always go to Sharp, and my dad already knows the doctors here and the nurses because he's been in and out a lot of times since early last year," said Cesar Gonzales, an Eastlake resident who came to the open house with his 92-year-old father, a Sharp Chula Vista patient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The market may soon be looking up for San Diegans hoping to buy a home. A new report by Zillow found that many economists believe the housing market in the West will turn into a buyer’s market by 2020.According to the housing site, home-values have appreciated faster in 2018 than in 2017. That coupled with a fall in inventory means that sellers are in the driver’s seat.At least for now. Zillow says recent data suggest the balance may be starting to tilt back toward buyers. Home growth is slowing in more than half the nation’s 35 largest metros and price cuts are common.Even in San Diego, where the cost of living is well above average, 20 percent of listings saw a price cut in June.A separate report from Zillow found that the increase in home values has also slowed throughout San Diego.Three out of four economists surveyed say the national housing marked could see a shift to a buyer’s market by 2020.Those same economists say the Midwest will be the first to see the shift, beginning as early as 2019, followed by the Northeast, South and West in 2020.“For the past several years, home sellers held all the cards at the negotiating table, fielding multiple offers while buyers faced stiff competition and a fast-moving market,” said Zillow Senior Economist Aaron Terrazas.Over the next year, Zillow expects the rate of appreciation to slow to 4.7 percent in San Diego, where the median home price is 4,100.“Conditions are starting to show signs of easing up, but the effects of years of limited construction still linger. Inventory is still falling on an annual basis, and home values are growing well above their historic pace.
