SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Friday in the trial of a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, is charged with murder and a special- circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Ford is accused of strangling the victim. Last year, investigators with the District Attorney's Office's identified Ford as a suspect through DNA evidence, prosecutors say, as well as a single fingerprint he allegedly left on Hayden's stovetop.RELATED: April trial date set for man accused in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanTrial testimony indicated that Ford's fingerprint did not yield results on a San Diego County database, but when submitted to a national database, a match was found in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest in North Carolina for making criminal threats.He was subsequently arrested in the summer of 2018.His murder trial began earlier this week at the downtown San Diego courthouse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of nine servicemembers killed last month when an amphibious assault vehicle sank in the ocean near San Clemente Island was laid to rest Friday at Miramar National Cemetery.Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes.The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced today a person at Patrick Henry High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff.The dates of exposure are from August 26, 2019, to March 13, 2020. The agency is working with San Diego Unified School District officials to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing.Patrick Henry High School is currently participating in social distancing protocols and onsite TB screening will not be available at the school. Identified students who may have been exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider may contact agency staff to arrange for free testing by appointment only.Identified staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected.``Testing is recommended for everyone who was determined to have been exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection typically has no symptoms,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. ``Early diagnosis is important so that people can get treatment and prevent them from developing the infectious form of the disease.''Symptoms of infectious tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People with symptoms of TB, or who are immune-compromised and may not show symptoms, should consult their medical provider to be evaluated for the bacteria.
