SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students have been released from school following reports of shots fired in the area around Kearny Senior High School Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, officers were alerted to the reports around 2:20 p.m. So far, no one has been taken into custody and police are still searching for a scene. Despite ongoing challenges, residents at a senior living facility are finding ways to stay positive.You can’t see their smiles but you can tell they’re there.Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Sabre Springs are not only adapting to the pandemic, they’re overcoming it through "The Joys of Life."Don Bodow started the program to spread happiness and stimulate minds. Through a series of puzzles, games, and activities he helps fellow residents stay positive.“I’m making other people happy,” said Bodow. “Giving them joy simply makes me feel good.”Although they can’t be with their families during the pandemic, many are happy right where they are.“The joy of life is in all of us,” said Bodow. “We may not realize it and it needs to be brought out. You need to accept the fact that there are joys in your life.”One of his most active students is 98-year-old Pauline Hayes.“Some of those words are misspelled and you’re challenged to find them,” said Hayes. “I love doing Joys of Life.”Hayes attends every session and credits the class for keeping her sharp. When we asked her about the secret to life she replied, “keeping positive and keeping active.”Bodow says the program was built on his own experience after spending two months in a coma.“I lost all my memory, all my muscle mass. I had to learn how to walk again,” said Bodow.He’s made an incredible comeback while helping others along the way.“This is never about me,” said Bodow. “It’s making the other people happy, giving them a sense of a full life.”Through the challenges of COVID-19, Joys of Life is touching the lives of residents and staff like never before.Bodow has a collection of puzzles and games on his website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The elderly victim of a brutal home invasion in Clairemont last week is relieved two of the three suspects are in custody. John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53 are due in court Wednesday afternoon in connection with last Wednesday's home invasion in the 4600 block of Firestone Street.Eighty-seven-year-old Paul Schmidt suffered injuries to his head, arms, and wrist during the attack. "I was very grateful for the work that the police did, " said Schmidt. Schmidt said he's lived in the home for fifty-three years and never felt unsafe. "I know that drugs have been so dominant in our society lately that it's a whole different world that we're living in. Things we used to take for granted, you can't anymore," said Schmidt. Schmidt was installing a ceiling fan when he says three men burst through his front door."All of a sudden, these three guys come in and said this is a robbery and he grabbed scissors and walked up to me and said don't mess with us. I didn't want to die that day, and there was three. I'm one guy, I'm 87, I'm not as tough as I used to be," said Schmidt. He tried to pull one of the intruders by his beard, that's when Schmidt says one of the robbers hit him over the head with a ceiling fan blade."The one guy was higher than a kite; the one they have in custody, he was really a terrible person." Police say the trio ransacked the home and took off in the victim's truck, which was recovered. The suspects have lengthy criminal records. They're scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 1:30 pm. 1551

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The gloves are coming off in the race for San Diego County District Attorney, with a unlikely person taking shots at Genevieve Jones-Wright Friday.Rebecca Harrison, who said she’s the victim of a Balboa Park rapist, backed candidate Summer Stephan.At a news conference in front of the courthouse, Harrison said Jones-Wright, who was the public defender in the case, treated Harrison as if she was the one on trial.“Several weeks ago I found out that Genevieve was running for D.A. and it literally made me sick to my stomach. It felt like someone had kicked me because she was professing that she gives dignity and a voice to victims when that is not what I experienced whatsover,” Harrison said.Jones-Wright told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin she gave Harrison an extreme level of compassion and that the press conference was all political posturing. She also said the 6th amendment of the constitution guarantees everyone the right to competent representation, and that everyone should read the full transcript of the cross examination.Stephan did not make a public statement at the news conference. 1132
