They are everywhere.Residents in the Dobson Ranch neighborhood of Mesa say they're fed up with the number of feral cats that are roaming the neighborhood.  Alan Robinson, who has lived in the community for more than 20 years said the problem started about four or five years ago. "There was one time I opened my door and I counted 35 cats on my front lawn," said Robinson.Now with cats mating, neighbors reported seeing dozens of kittens also roaming the streets. Robinson said these cats were urinating and defecating on front lawns, planters, by front doors, and in backyards.He says cushions on his backyard patio furniture that were coated with a thick layer of cat hair. During an interview, a cat appeared out of nowhere in the backyard and jumped onto a wall.Robinson said he had installed spikes on parts of his backyard wall to keep the cats away.Another resident said he had to buy expensive chemicals to treat his yard because of the waste left behind."When I try to mow the lawn the smell is so strong, I'm inhaling it. I've had to buy masks so I don't breathe it in," resident Jim Jarvis said.Residents believed the feral cats were attracted to their neighborhood for a reason."The problem statement is not that we have feral cats. The problem statement is that some people feed those feral cats. They call this place home," Robinson said.Pictures and videos of the feral cats taken by residents in the community showed at least eight cats sitting in the backyard of one home, by a swimming pool. Another woman who asked us not to identify her shared photos and videos of almost a dozen cats sitting on a neighbor's front lawn.Other pictures taken by Robinson showed cats on the sidewalk, cats sleeping on top of parked cars, on the roofs of homes.One cat appeared to have several large lumps on it's back.Robinson said he had done a lot of research that showed the health hazards in communities with feral cats.He pointed to a study published in "Trends in Parasitology" showing cat feces can be a source of parasites that can affect humans and other animals in the neighborhood.However, most Phoenix-area shelters will not take in alley cats, as they are considered free-roaming creatures, unlike dogs.Some animal advocates say feral cats can live healthy lives outdoors. Most Arizona counties have Trap-Neuter-Return programs for feral cats, calling it the best way to control the growing population of alley cats in the community.The Animal Defense League runs a trap, neuter and return program in Arizona. Officials ask those interested in the program fill out a form on their website.According to information posted on the site, the number of animals killed in local shelters has decreased since their predecessor started the Spay Neuter Hotline.  2829

Three inmates in a suburban Atlanta jail are being credited with saving a deputy's life.The Gwinett County Sheriff's Office says the trio noticed the officer was not feeling well as he conducted security procedures.After he returned to his seat, the deputy lost consciousness. He then fell to the floor and hit his head.The inmates began pounding on the doors loudly enough to wake up the deputy, who then opened the cell doors.After that, he lost consciousness again. But the inmates stayed by his side and administered aid until help arrived.The deputy is now recovering at home."These inmates came to his aid because our deputy, like most law enforcement officers, treats people with the dignity they deserve," the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook. "These inmates had no obligation whatsoever to render aid to a bleeding, vulnerable deputy, but they didn't hesitate. Many people have strong opinions about law enforcement officers and criminals, but this incident clearly illustrates the potential goodness found in both.""We're proud of our deputy, whose strong desire to serve gave him the strength to activate the door release when he believed an inmate needed his help. Three Florida police officers were sentenced to prison this week for intentionally making false arrests for burglary, according to the Department of Justice.Former Biscayne Park Police Chief Raimundo Atesiano worked with three former officers, Guillermo Ravelo, Charlie Dayoub and Raul Fernandez to falsely arrest several victims to?keep their?burglary clearance rate at 100%, according to the Department of Justice. One of the victims was a teenager.Throughout Atesiano's tenure as the Biscayne Park police chief, he encouraged officers to falsely arrest individuals with no evidence or probable cause to cover for all reported burglaries, according to the DOJ."These three police officers from Biscayne Park disgraced themselves and damaged the public's trust in law enforcement," Special Agent in Charge of FBI Miami Robert F. Lasky said in a statement.Following directions from Atesiano, Ravelo falsely arrested a victim known as "C.D." in January 2013, and another victim identified as "E.B." in February 2014, on burglary charges without any legal standing, according to the Department of Justice.Ravelo was sentenced Thursday to 27 months in prison. Family members and friends at Ravelo's sentencing described him as a devoted father who was active in church,?the Miami Herald reported.In an unrelated incident, Ravelo responded to a traffic stop in April 2013. During the stop he arrested and used unreasonable force by punching the handcuffed driver, according to court filings.Under similar direction from Atesiano, Dayoub and Fernandez falsely arrested a teen referred to as "T.D." in June 2013.Dayoub and Fernandez were each sentenced to 12 months in prison earlier this week for their part in falsely arresting 16-year-old "T.D." for four unsolved burglaries, per the DOJ. The officers cooperated with the government and directly implicated Atesiano."This absolute abuse of power by all three officers violated every aspect of the oath Ravelo, Dayoub, and Fernandez took the day they became police officers," State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said.Atesiano pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge.
