Residents and businesses near a dam in North Carolina appeared to have dodged potential disaster Wednesday after an emergency at the location was called off.Earlier, heavy rains and a landslide in the western North Carolina mountains "compromised the integrity" of Lake Tahoma dam and triggered urgent calls for mandatory evacuations.Emergency officials said the dam was "at risk of imminent failure" and the weather service extended a flash flood warning for central McDowell County until 12:30 p.m.The National Weather Service cited reports early Wednesday from McDowell County emergency management officials that "water is spilling around the sides of Lake Tahoma dam. Evacuations ongoing south of the dam."But later, McDowell County emergency officials said Lake Tahoma had been inspected and deemed safe and a mandatory evacuation was halted. "The emergency at Lake Tahoma has been canceled. The evacuation order is no longer in effect. The engineer has performed a safety inspection and determined that the evacuation order is no longer needed," according to a statement on the McDowell County 911/Emergency Management Facebook page. 1147

Republicans officially nominated President Donald Trump for re-election Monday during an in-person roll call vote at the Republican National Convention in Charlotte.Trump cruised to victory in the GOP primary, as is typical for an incumbent president in a re-election primary. Trump picked up nearly every available delegate in his campaign, losing just a single delegate to former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld.The roll call vote was one of the few in-person events scheduled for the four-day RNC. Prior to the pandemic, Charlotte was scheduled to host all events relating to the convention, but Trump later said he would move portions of the convention to Jacksonville, Florida, citing North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper's hesitancy to lift lockdown restrictions. Trump later canceled the Florida portions of the RNC as cases and deaths in the state spiked.Democrats held a completely virtual convention last week, which included an entirely remote roll-call vote.The nightly programming of the RNC begins on Monday evening at 8:30 p.m, with politicians and other prominent Republicans giving speeches from across the country. Kevin McCarthy was elected House minority leader Wednesday, according to members of Congress in the closed-door meeting where the elections took place, meaning the California Republican will lead House GOP members after Speaker Paul Ryan leaves Capitol Hill at the end of his term in January.The vote was 159-43.With Ryan headed for the exits, McCarthy, the current No. 2 House Republican, was long viewed as the heavy favorite to become minority leader in the new Congress, the highest-ranking GOP leadership post with Republicans in the minority after losing control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterms.McCarthy faced a long-shot challenge from Rep. Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, but the California Republican is expected to prevail in his bid to become minority leader. Ryan announced in April that he would not seek re-election and has endorsed McCarthy, the House majority leader for the past four years, to be his successor.Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party. In private conversations, Trump has pushed for Jordan and another close conservative ally -- Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina -- to have the top Republican positions on key committees, according to a source familiar. McCarthy doesn't dole out those positions-- that's for the House GOP Steering Committee -- but plenty of people on the Steering Committee are loyal to McCarthy and would heed his word. I think very highly of him. I think he's a very good conservative, showed up a lot of leadership. He certainly earned the position," Meuser told reporters on Tuesday. "On the same note, I think Jim Jordan is a smart, tough, focused individual. So I respect him as well. We'll see over the next couple of days."Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who is vying for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured last year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice. Scalise is not facing a challenge for the position.Rep. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The young man found shot to death in a Ramona home was identified by his roommate Monday as a resident of Ukraine.San Diego County Sheriff's deputies got a 911 call reporting Sunday at 8 p.m. reporting shots fired near the home on Wood Rock Lane. They found the victim dead inside.Four people live in the home, including Ben Ledbetter. He said the victim, a 20-year-old man, worked for Ledbetter's mobile detailing business for four years. Ledbetter believes he is being targeted and said someone killed his best friend out of anger."He's 100 percent good.  His heart is strong, his will is strong.  His attitude was positive.  You couldn't kill a better person.  He was the best person you could ever know," Ledbetter said.The victim's name is being withheld until his family can be notified.Deputies shut down the area near the home until 1 p.m. Monday to search for evidence. Ledbetter told 10News that detectives took his phone, truck and clothes as part of the investigation.Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact sheriff’s Homicide Detail at 858-974-2321 or 858-565-5200.   1182
