Rabbits are multiplying in the childrens' book section.Comedian John Oliver is provoking Mike Pence with a parody book about the vice president's pet bunny to coincide with the Pence family's release of a new children's book."Marlon Bundo's A Day in the Life of the Vice President" was written by the vice president's daughter, Charlotte Pence, and illustrated by second lady Karen Pence, a watercolor artist. The book, which is out Monday, "gives young readers a bunny's-eye view of the special duties of the vice president," per its publisher. Not to be out-bunned, HBO's "Last Week Tonight" released its own version, "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo."The late-night comedy news program's book "tells the story of Vice President Mike Pence's famed pet rabbit's same-sex wedding," per its publisher."I live with my Mom, Grandma, and Grampa in an old, stuffy house on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory. That's because my Grampa is the vice president. His name is Mike Pence. But this story isn't going to be about him because he isn't very fun. This story is about me, because I'm very, very fun," an excerpt of the spoof Bundo book reads alongside a watercolor picture of the rabbit, clad in a multicolor bow tie, hula-hooping on the grounds of the vice president's residence.Pence was criticized during his time as Indiana governor for his positions on issues important to the LGBTQ community, including signing a religious freedom bill into law in 2015.A spokesperson for Regnery Publishing, which issued the Pences' book, called the parody "unfortunate.""It's unfortunate that anyone would feel the need to ridicule an educational children's book and turn it into something controversial and partisan. Our and Mrs. and Charlotte Pence's goal is -- and will continue to be -- to educate young readers about the important role of the vice president, as well as to highlight the charities to which portions of the book proceeds will be donated," the spokesperson said in a statement. The proceeds of "A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo" will be donated to The Trevor Project and AIDS United, while the Pences will donate a portion their proceeds to A21, a nonprofit focused on combating human trafficking, and an art therapy program at Riley Hospital for Children. The parody version of the book was the No.1 bestseller on?Amazon.com Monday morning. The Pence version ranked 15th. 2464
Rap superstar Kanye West has qualified to appear on Oklahoma’s presidential ballot, the first state where he met the requirements before the filing deadline. But confusion remains over whether he’s actually running.A representative for West filed the necessary paperwork and paid the ,000 filing Wednesday afternoon, which was the deadline for a spot on the state’s Nov. 3 presidential ballot, said Oklahoma Board of Elections spokeswoman Misha Mohr. He was one of three independent presidential candidates to pay the filing fee prior to the deadline, she added. The others were concert pianist Jade Simmons and cryptocurrency entrepreneur Brock Pierce. The filing came a day after New York Magazine’s “Intelligencer” quoted West adviser Steve Kramer saying “he’s out” and noting that the staff he had hired were disappointed. However, TMZ reported that the West campaign had filed a “Statement of Organization” Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission, stating that a Kanye 2020 committee would serve as principal campaign committee for a West candidacy.West has already missed the deadline to qualify for the ballot in several states, and it’s unclear if he is willing or able to collect enough signatures required to qualify in others.West, who is married to reality television star Kim Kardashian West, initially announced his candidacy on July 4. Days later, he told Forbes magazine that he, who once praised President Donald Trump and said the two share “dragon energy,” was “taking the red hat off” — a reference to Trump’s trademark red “Make America Great Again” cap.West, who said that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, told the magazine that he planned to model his White House on the fictional land in “Black Panther” if he won the presidency, adding “Let’s get back to Wakanda.” 1816
President Donald Trump Saturday threatened to withhold federal aid from California to assist with relief from wildfires burning up and down the state.Trump blamed the state's "poor" forest management for the devastation caused by the wildfires."There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!" Trump tweeted. 547
Protests broke out in downtown St. Louis on Friday afternoon hours after a judge found former police officer Jason Stockley not guilty of first-degree murder in the 2011 shooting death of black motorist Anthony Lamar Smith."This Court, in conscience, cannot say that the State has proven every element of murder beyond a reasonable doubt, or that the State has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in self-defense," St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson wrote in his ruling.RELATED: Protests break out in downtown St. Louis after ex-cop Jason Stockley acquitted in shootingSt. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner said she was "disappointed" with the judge's decision. The defendant waived his right to a jury trial, meaning the ruling was left to Wilson. Stockley also was acquitted of armed criminal action. 853
