SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Employment Development Department services are temporarily closed to in-person services at San Diego Workforce Partnership Career Centers. According to officials with the Workforce Partnership, walk-ins won’t be accepted, however some services will be available by appointment only.“Our resources have always been available online, and actually the number one way people file for unemployment in or out of a public health emergency is online,” said Andrew Picard, chief program Officer at the San Diego Workforce Partnership.Picard said if people don't have a computer or internet access, don't worry, the phone still works. Career agents and advisors with the organization can walk you through a job search or the unemployment process.“We have teams of career agents and advisors standing by over the phone and with online tools to do virtual meetings,” Picard said. “A great deal of resources and programs that are still in operation and still available to the community.”Unemployment assistance isn’t just for people who recently lost their job.According to the Employment Development Department, “You are encouraged to apply for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits if you are unemployed, which includes reasons such as, your hours are reduced due to the quarantine, you were separated from your employer during the quarantine, you are subject to a quarantine required by a medical professional or state or local health officer.”Last week Governor Gavin Newsom sped up the time it takes to get financial assistance. An executive order signed by the Newsom waives the one-week waiting period for people who are unemployed and/or disabled as a result of COVID-19.On Wednesday, the United States Senate passed a coronavirus response measure to provide sick leave and free testing."Hang in there,” Picard said. “There’s a lot of support out there to support you to find work or to maintain and keep your employment."For more information, connect with your local career centerThis page includes all COVID-19 updates related to job seeker services. For more information from the State of California For more unemployment help over the phone you can call 1-800-300-5616. 2193

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk. They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought. There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. It’s just protein water and salt”.Once they reach the point where they’re able to identically replicate the silk of a black widow spider, the artificial version could be used in building materials for bridges or environmentally friendly replacements for plastic.Black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) spin a lightweight thread much stronger than that of other spider species, with draglines that can stretch an extra 25 percent of their length before snapping. The composition of the spun silk fibers was previously identified, but the structure of the proteins involved in producing them has been more of a mystery, now one step closer. 1650

y have, be grateful for the fact that we exist," says Chopra. For those who have lost a loved one: "Grief is something we must embrace. You can't bypass...If you resist grief you get worse, it causes more stress," Chopra added. But for everyone else, the worst use of our imagination is fear."That fearful thought is recycling through social media, through television, through everything that we see ... So first recognize that 99% of your thoughts is just recycling of everyone else's fear. So why do you take ownership of thoughts that didn't come from you?" asked Chopra. Professional and personal change, forced on so many now, is a moment to look inside. It's time for self-care and it starts with our thoughts."Ask yourself who am I? Want do I really want? What's my purpose? What am I grateful for? And you'll pivot," says Chopra. "So, mindfulness is nothing more than being aware of the choices you're making, and the experiences you're having right now, and if your experiences are not pleasant."The world in crisis, can also be inside us as hostility, resentment, and grievances — all toxic."So, get rid of toxicity in your life, this is the opportunity ... Toxic emotions, toxic relationships, toxic environments, toxic food...Time to detox," Chopra said.Chopra is blunt about the turmoil in the world. But as we rely on science and technology to find a creative response to COVID, we can lessen exhaustion by not living in the future. We must right now confront that reality. Strident, extreme atmosphere, politically, racially. What's it doing? Creating a world that frankly speaking is idiotic," Chopra said. "If you live in the present, then all you do is say: I want today, my body to be joyful and energetic, my emotions to be loving, have empathy and compassion ... My mind to clear and my soul to be light, today. That's it." 3011

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia. But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans. The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals. While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four people who were arrested during a border demonstration in 2018 celebrated a not guilty verdict Monday.Demonstrators gathered downtown Monday to support two clergy members and two female Army combat veterans who were arrested during the "Love Knows No Borders" event in December 2018. Faith leaders at the U.S.-Mexico border near Friendship Park and some 400 people were calling for an end to detaining and deporting immigrants and showing support for asylum seekers. The four arrested argued they were exercising their religious freedom and first amendment right to assemble and speak out against injustice. Combat veteran Brittany Ramos Debarros, who's standing trial, spoke to 10News following the verdict. "Took an oath to protect this constitution and I take that seriously. And what I see all around me is a disregard for what's right. A disregard for people's rights, including the right to protest peacefully on our own land, the land I supposedly defended," Debarros said. But federal agents showed video of the demonstration, arguing there were numerous no trespassing signs and they made numerous demands and warnings to stay out of the restricted areas or face arrest. One demonstrator, who was not in court Monday, was arrested for assaulting an officer at the rally. 1308
