SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of Santee called on residents today to help it develop a brand to market the city to tourists, businesses and potential residents.Santee recently partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a marketing brand for the city. To that end, the marketing agency launched an online survey for Santee residents to give feedback on the city's strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Responses to the survey are anonymous, according to North Star Destination Strategies."We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North American and I can't emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members," North Star Founder Don McEachern said.Residents can access the survey at the city's website and submit it electronically. The survey is also available in physical form at Santee City Hall. The surveys must be submitted by Sept. 2 to be considered."It is important for us to celebrate what we love about our community and share it with others," Santee Mayor John Minto said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox announced Friday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursed the county more than million for providing medical attention to immigrants and asylum seekers who temporarily stayed at a shelter near downtown San Diego earlier this year.FEMA sent a check for ,022,686.12 to San Diego County to cover costs that its Health and Human Services Agency incurred in the first half of the year. According to Fletcher and Cox, the funds were primarily meant for county staff and contracted organizations that dealt with a flu outbreak at the shelter in addition to offering resources to thousands of migrants."We're glad the federal government stepped up to cover costs for a problem it created," Cox said. "Let's not forget we opened an unused county building for a shelter because immigration authorities were releasing asylum- seeking families on our streets without providing them any resources. SDRRN member organization Jewish Family Services opened the shelter in March.A massive influx of migrants and asylum seekers descended upon on the southern border in the first half of the year, particularly in May and June when federal immigration officials used the shelter as an overflow facility for migrants apprehended in Texas' Rio Grande Valley.U.S. Customs and Border Protection began flying migrants and asylum seekers to San Diego for processing due to overcrowding at the agency's Rio Grande Valley detention facilities. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - On Tuesday park rangers recovered the body of a San Diego man who fell from a cliff at Sequoia National Park last weekend.Anton Dokov, 29, slipped on a hiking trail in the Watchtower area above Tokopah Valley and slid over a sheer precipice on Sunday, according to Sintia Kawasaki-Yee, spokeswoman for the Central California nature preserve."Rangers responded that same day, but dangerous ice and snow conditions with a very steep slope meant they had to turn around,'' Kawasaki- Yee said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Metropolitan Transit System is increasing bus and trolley services as the economy continues to reopen.MTS will increase weekday midday service on the UC San Diego Blue Line beginning Monday, June 15, followed by service increases on dozens of bus routes in late June."As we continue the regional reopening of our economy, we know more people will need the services that MTS provides. We want people to know that San Diego's transit system will continue to be a safe and reliable option as possible," said MTS Board Chair Nathan Fletcher. "We've strengthened our already-enhanced sanitizing protocols on vehicles and at stations and implemented policies to better protect our passengers and employees. We are now increasing service to help reliability and allow for greater physical distancing of passengers."Beginning Monday, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley -- which connects the San Ysidro international border to downtown San Diego -- will increase its service frequency to every 7 1/2 minutes from 4:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and keep 15-minute frequencies until 9 p.m., followed by every 30 minutes until the end of the service day.Weekday ridership on the Blue Line plummeted 69% between February 24 and April 20, from 63,715 daily riders to just 19,787. Since April 20, average weekday ridership has increased 28%, topping out at 25,367 the week of June 1. More frequency will give more opportunity for passengers to practice social distancing on board and on platforms when possible. Service on the Orange Line and Sycuan Green Line will remain unchanged.While trolley service will first be increasing to closely mirror pre- COVID-19 levels, MTS is also making preparations to increase bus service in the coming weeks. Schedules and routes are being finalized. The goal is to provide service increases that meet market demands. MTS reduced weekday service levels approximately 25% on April 13 to address record-low ridership while still providing critical service for essential workers and trips.In addition to service increases, MTS says it also continues to improve its already-strict safety and sanitizing protocols. The latest development on that front is retrofitting buses with germ barriers to better protect bus operators. Barriers will also allow the agency to return to front- door boarding, which gives passengers more room in which to spread out. MTS has only allowed rear-door boarding since April 1 to protect the health of bus operators.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. Frequencies and spans have been modified due to COVID-19. Updated schedules can be accessed on the MTS website.
