ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Zoo is now five years into its ambitious attempt to save a critically endangered species, the Northern White Rhino, from extinction. There are currently just two Northern White's still alive, both females who are unable to give birth. They live at a preserve in Kenya.“It’s the only thing that keeps me going, thinking that this is possible and that we can save a species," says Dr. Marisa Korody, part of the team working on the project. The concept sounds like a science fiction novel. The plan is to take skin cells from Northern White rhinos preserved at the Safari Park's Frozen Zoo. Using Nobel Prize-winning technology developed 14 years ago, Dr. Korody is working to use those skin cells to make stem cells. Stem cells can then be converted into any other kind of cell. In this case, the genetically pure Northern White Rhino sperm and eggs that could be used for in vitro fertilization, with Southern White Rhinos, a close genetic cousin of the Northern White, to use as surrogate mothers. Dr. Korody says her team has made great progress, including successfully turning skin cells from Angilifu, a male Northern White rhino who died at the Safari Park in 2014, into stem cells and turning those stem cells into heart cells. They even recorded incredible video of those living heart cells beating in a petri dish. “We basically jumped up and down in the lab. That was probably one of the most exciting days we’ve had. We were pulling people in from the hallways to say, come look and see what we did.” Along with the cell portion of the project, tremendous progress has also been made with the in vitro research. This fall, the Zoo celebrated the first birthdays of two Southern White Rhinos who were born using the technology the team hopes to use with the Northern White embryos. “These two, Edward and future, are so healthy, so happy, so well-adjusted. I don’t have children of my own, but I think it must be the same kind, on some scale, of pride you feel in your own children," said Dr. Barbara Durrant, who leads that portion of the project. (KGTV) - Three people are dead and two people were injured Friday when a bluff collapsed just north of Grandview Surf Beach in Encinitas, San Diego County Sheriff's deputies confirmed.The bluff fell about 3 p.m. near a lifeguard tower at the Grandview Beach staircase located in the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue, just below South Ponto State Beach.One person was flown to the hospital in critical condition. A second victim was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Both of those victims have succumbed to their injuries. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A Pauma Valley man accused of ambushing three San Diego County sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma, sparking a nearly six-hour standoff in which he suffered a gunshot wound, was charged today with three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer.Arraignment for 28-year-old Jose Nieto at Palomar Medical Center was postponed until Jan. 11 because he was deemed medically unfit for the proceeding while being treated for the gunshot wound he sustained during last Thursday's standoff.The complaint against Nieto includes allegations of personal use and discharge of a firearm. He faces 33 years and eight months in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.The standoff began around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 20, when deputies Cory Crawford, Jared Muli, and John Avedesian went to a home in the 156-00 block of Adams Drive in response to a a 911 call from a man who said "he needed help and didn't feel safe in his home."As the three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, said sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams.The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down. The deputies were not injured.Authorities spend hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home about 10 p.m. and found Nieto inside with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. 1598

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — An 8-year-old child was killed Friday after being hit by a vehicle while walking with family in Fallbrook.The child was walking across the entrance to a parking lot on Heald Lane at about 6:30 p.m., when a vehicle turned into the parking lot and struck the child, according to California Highway Patrol.Paramedics arrived rushed the child to Rady Children's Hospital, however, the 8-year-old died on the way to the hospital.Two family members were with the child when the crash occurred. The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 58-year-old woman, remained at the scene.Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor, CHP said.The child and driver were not immediately identified. 746

ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws.The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers.
