BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Meteorological Station warned Sunday that rainstorms would again batter many provinces and regions in the coming days bringing with it bigger risks of new flooding and other geological disasters in central and eastern China.From Monday until Wednesday, the observatory forecast some regions in provinces including Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and Anhui will see heavy rain.Eastern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, central Henan, Chongqing and Shanghai will also see rainstorms during the next three days.A total of 14.92 million people in 10 provinces and regions along China's longest river, the Yangtze, have had their lives disrupted after torrential rains began pounding since July 8, a statement from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) said Sunday.Rain-triggered floods also brought damage to 806,000 hectares of farmland and destroyed 20,000 houses, with direct economic losses standing at 8.6 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars), a statement from the flood control authority said.Official figures showed during the 10 days ended on Saturday, at least 50 people were confirmed dead and 15 others were still missing in 9 provinces after heavy rains.Rain-triggered floods have left 14 people dead and three others missing in Chongqing Municipality since Thursday, toppling more than 3,000 houses, partly cutting off power supply and causing the evacuation of 80,400 people, according to the local government.The floods have affected the lives of more than 1.7 million people in 17 districts and counties there, incurring 1.34 billion yuan in direct economic losses, Chongqing's flood-control and drought-relief headquarters said.In Hubei Province, 17 people were killed and three others missing amid downpours since July 3, which affected the lives of more than 5.63 million people in 75 counties across the province, Hubei's Civil Affairs Administration said Sunday.More than 182,500 residents had been relocated after heavy rains damaged more than 71,000 houses, inundated 537,650 hectares of farmland, cutting off many road services and suspended power supply.In Jiangxi Province, more than 34,000 people have been evacuated since July 5 when downpours began to hit 22 counties, pulling down more than 2,400 houses.So far 620,000 people from five provinces in eastern and central China have been evacuated from flood-hit areas as soldiers from the People's Liberation Army and armed police forces mobilize to fight the floods.Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources, also SFDH vice director, said at a work meeting Sunday that local authorities should come up with detailed plans for flood control to minimize losses caused by the disaster.A total of 8 work teams sent by SFDH are also helping with flood control work in provinces along the Yangtze and in northwest China's Qinghai Province, where thousands of people were evacuated Sunday from Golmud City as a risky reservoir nearby was on the verge of breaching after heavy rain.But the water level of the reservoir has begun easing, the SFDH said, as temporary channels had been dug to divert water.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged at a work conference Saturday relevant departments to closely monitor the weather and issue alerts promptly, reinforce dams and dikes as well as resettle people affected by the floods.Meteorological experts warned cities should be on alert against water logging while mountainous areas should be wary of mud flows and landslides triggered by heavy rains.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China official Monday said China is ready to enhance cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with a delegation of the Workers' Party of Korea, which was led by Kim Chang Ryong, the DPRK's Minister of Land and Environment Protection, in Beijing.Hailing the constant growth of China-DPRK relations, Li, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, reviewed the successful visit by the DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il in May.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Kim Jong Il reached important consensus on promoting bilateral pragmatic cooperation during that visit.China would work with the DPRK to fulfill the consensus and expand bilateral cooperation to push forward China-DPRK relations, Li said.Kim Chang Ryong said the DPRK held the unswerving policy of cementing and promoting friendship with China. The DPRK would work with China to enhance ties in accordance with the willingness of top leaders from both sides.The DPRK delegation is in China on a visit from June 12 to 22 at the invitation of the CPC. GUANLING, Guizhou, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers have recovered eight bodies from the ruins of a southwest China village, two days after a devastating rain-triggered landslide destroyed 37 houses and buried 99 villagers under mud, authorities said Wednesday.As of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, 91 residents of Dazhai Village, Guanling County, Guizhou Province, remained missing, said officials at the rescue headquarters.From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday the bodies of three buried villagers were recovered, bringing the confirmed death toll to eight, said the officials.A total of 26 heavy backhoes had removed 100,000 cubic meters of clay. Some 2,000 people took part in the rescue work, said Pu Jianjiang, head of the provincial work safety bureau.The landslide brought down about 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters of mud, which was unstable and likely to trigger additional landslides, said Yin Yueping, a researcher with the Ministry of Land and Resources.The landslide struck 37 homes in Dazhai Village at 2:30 p.m. Monday.At least 1,000 villagers who lived in the area have since been evacuated.

TANGSHAN, Hebei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Tangshan, a Chinese city that lost 240,000 lives to a devastating earthquake 34 years ago, relived the pain and sorrow once again Wednesday on another anniversary.Not only Tangshan, the whole nation's memories of the catastrophe also came alive again as a film about the earthquake, "Aftershock", hit the big screen across the country.A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the industrial city in north China on July 28, 1976, which was believed to be one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 20th century.Thirty-four years later, exactly on the very same day of the quake, Wu Ze, 46, came to a black marble wall that bears the names of all victims of the earthquake, including her sister's."I was 12 and my sister was 16 (when the quake struck). She was the smartest kid in the family and the best in her class. She was just gone overnight, " Wu said, unable to stop weeping."Every year on July 28, I come here for her," she said.The Tangshan government built the 300-meter-long wall, widely known as the Chinese "wailing wall", two years ago for the public to mourn those they had lost, as most of the dead were hastily buried in mass graves.The Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park, where the "wailing wall" is located, saw its busiest day of the year Wednesday as people streamed in to mourn for their beloved ones.An earthquake museum in the park also opened to the public Wednesday.Covering an area of 12,000 square meters, the museum displays more than 400 photographs and 600 pieces of articles about the 1976 earthquake.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday denied claims in a U.S. government report, saying it exaggerated China's military strength."We firmly oppose this report," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a press release when asked to comment on the annual report by the U.S. Defense Department.She said the report exaggerated China's military strength, and unfairly blamed China for some problems that exist in the bilateral military relationship."China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is defensive in nature," Jiang said, noting that China is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."We urge the U.S side to respect this fact," she said.Jiang also urged the United States to stop issuing such reports on China's military, and work towards improving relations between the two militaries and the two nations, instead of working against China.
