SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico.At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty. But this time is not totally stress free.That's because in the back of Griffith's mind is the fact that it's been more than two months since she filed for unemployment - yet to receive a dime."Everyday it's something that I constantly think about," she says. "It's eating at me, and I'm worried that it's not going to come."Cindy Griffith lost her job at an Encinitas restaurant when Coronavirus restrictions took effect. Matthew lost his restaurant job in Del Mar.Both filed for unemployment.Matthew got his right away - giving the family a much needed lifeline.Cindy, however, got a letter saying she needed to verify her identity - and the Social Security Number on the form was way off."I said there's no way I typed this in like that," she said. "I went back and checked my records and you could see that I put it in right."That letter came in early April. Cindy Griffith says she's called the E.D.D. hundreds of times since - even keeping her documents in Wilder's stroller in case she gets through on a walk.She confirmed the EDD received her identity information, but is always told her benefits are pending. The video was captured on October 25 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. At midnight, agents reportedly spotted a suspicious panga-style vessel landing on a beach near San Mateo Point in San Clemente. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge has extended a freeze on deporting families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, giving a reprieve to hundreds of children and their parents to remain in the United States.U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw said in his order Thursday that "hasty" deportation of children after reunification with their parents would deprive them of their right to seek asylum.The American Civil Liberties Union had requested families be given at least a week.
