BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Zhou Yongkang Tuesday called on law enforcement personnel to take more preventive measures against crime and accidents during the Lunar New Year holiday.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited community security personnel, a district court, and police patrolling downtown Beijing Tuesday.He also visited a police station that is responsible for keeping public order in the area surrounding the central leadership compound of Zhongnanhai.During his visits, Zhou, who also heads the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, said China was seeing the travel peak for the Spring Festival and some regions were suffering icy weather and lingering drought.He asked the police to take effective measures in traffic control and fire-fighting work, and maintain social order during the holiday season.He commended the practice of deploying special police to patrol the surrounding areas of the Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, saying it could deter crime and enable quick responses to emergencies.During his visit to the district court, Zhou warned there were still "many social conflicts."He asked local courts to solve social conflicts more effectively, promote innovative social management and law enforcement in a just and clean manner.The Spring Festival, or Chinese lunar New Year, is the most important festival for Chinese. BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Beijing is ready to kick off its first ever car license plates lottery, to be broadcast live both on TV and over the Internet on Jan. 26, said officials with the allotment office Saturday.A total of 17,600 car license plates will be allocated to qualified individual applicants through the lottery, in keeping with the principles of openness, fairness and equity, according to the office.Validation for the first batch of 210,178 individual applicants has been completed, and the office will make public the results, as well as lottery time and rules, on Tuesday.Applicants can check out the validation information at bjhjyd.gov.cn.The first group of car license plates for institution and company applicants will also be allocated through the lottery on the same day.The Beijing municipal government put in place the lottery mechanism at the end of last year in an effort to curb the capital city's fast growth of automobiles, which resulted in worsening traffic jams.The new mechanism seeks to reduce new car registrations by allowing only 240,000 in 2011, or about one-third of new cars registered in 2010.Data from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport (BMCT) shows there were only 78,000 cars in Beijing in 1978 and 200,000 in 1985.However, the number of cars soared after the country entered the 21st century amid fast economic growth and urbanization.Within 13 years, the number of cars in Beijing more than quadrupled to 4.76 million in 2010 from 1 million in 1997, according to the BMCT.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday released a new stable version of its Chrome web browser, which the company said is speedier, simpler and safer."With today's stable release, even your most complex web apps will run more quickly and responsively in the browser," Tim Steele, a Google software engineer, said in a blog post announcing the release.The new version of Chrome features a simpler settings page that opens in a tab rather than a dialog box, and contains a search box showing users the settings they are looking for while they type.Users can also synchronize passwords in the browser across their computers, and will be able to encrypt those passwords for extra security.Google said that the latest Chrome browser provides additional layer of protection against malicious web pages, with the extended application of sandboxing technology.The browser can be downloaded for free, and current Chrome users will be automatically updated to the new version soon, Google said.

BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Zhu Guangya, who contributed to the development of China's first atom and hydrogen bombs, died Saturday at age 87.Zhu was a senior academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He served as vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, between 1994 and 2003.Born in central China's Yichang city, Zhu obtained a PhD in nuclear physics from the University of Michigan in 1950. That year he returned to China. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1956.

CANBERRA, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Scientists on Thursday expressed disappointment to the decision to cancel the long-running Australian Science Festival in Canberra.The festival has been operating during August for the past 19 years with free and ticketed science education activities.However, the festival organizers on Wednesday announced to halt this year's program after failing to secure support from the Australian Capital Territory state government in time to arrange events.According to Australian Science Communicators president, Jesse Shore, thousands of school children have attended the festival over its history to learn more about science as a career."It's encouraged other activities to join it, it was very important in getting National Science Week started, and that's stimulated a lot of other science communication activities," he told ABC News on Thursday.Shore said the decision to close it down is unfortunate as the event has been very influential and instrumental promoting science communications activities.He said he hopes that a number of people would gather together in a new partnership, with new ideas and hopefully a new funding base.
