WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House South Lawn and its iconic Rose Garden are undergoing extensive re-sodding and other work after last month’s Republican National Convention turned them into a muddy mess. Crews have been working to repair damage to the public grounds, including browning of the South Lawn and mud patches in the Rose Garden, after the spaces were used as backdrops for President Donald Trump’s convention events. First lady Melania Trump delivered her convention speech in the newly-refurbished Rose Garden and the president formally accepted his party’s nomination on the South Lawn in front of more than a thousand people seated in rows of closely-packed white chairs, despite the ongoing pandemic.“The sod is being replaced at no cost to taxpayers. Additionally, there has been other planned infrastructure work taking place on the south grounds,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere. The president’s reelection campaign is paying for the work.The Rose Garden repairs come just weeks after the White House completed a major and controversial renovation of the garden intended, in part, to improve drainage infrastructure. 1150

The meeting might give her more insight as she continues her broader talks on how to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. DeVos has said she is open to allowing guns in schools but says the decision should be left to local communities.President Trump is in favor of arming teachers, saying that too many of these shootings happen in gun free zones.“A gun-free zone is, ‘Let’s go in and let’s attack, because bullets aren’t coming back at us,'” Trump said.Students at Stoneman Douglas have been vocal for change since the shooting last month. Their rallies were heard loudly and they have put pressure on lawmakers to enact gun reform during their visits to Tallahassee and during school walkouts. During a news conference, DeVos gave credit to the students for finding their voice and for taking interest in seeing what adults are going to do in response to the massacre. "People across the country in states and communities have addressed some of the concerns, some of the issues that have arisen here," DeVos said. "But we need to help elevate those opportunities and make sure people know there are solutions that can be engaged immediately."When pressed about the solutions she referenced, the secretary did not offer specifics. We’re getting a clearer picture of housing inequalities minority families are facing.Two economists analyzed more than a decade of tax assessment and sales information for nearly 120 million homes across the country. They focused on areas where every homeowner theoretically faces the same tax rate.What they found was that minority homeowners still ended up paying a ten to 13 percent higher tax rate on average. For the median Black or Hispanic household, that could be an extra to 0 a year.They also looked at property tax appeals in Chicago, and found Black homeowners were significantly less likely to appeal their property tax assessment. This kind of data is not available nationwide, but it is believed to be a widespread issue.“So much of it is rooted in systemic and historical structures of racism. So, you know, if you’re white and middle class in this country and you feel like your property tax bill is off in a way that doesn’t benefit you, your experience with government has probably been ‘oh, if I appeal or either that there's probably a process by which i can go get that wrong righted and i'll be given a fair shake at that,’” said Chris Hoene, with the California Budget and Policy Center.Hoene said Black Americans overall have had a far different experience with government, and the idea a Black homeowner would go and appeal and be treated fairly is not something they would consider.Hoene suggests creating systems that are less dependent on showing up in person to make their case, possibly allow appeals through an online system.The economists who looked at the nationwide data suggest assessors to look at zip code level home price indexes to reduce overtaxation. Two senior administration officials confirmed Meadows tested positive for the virus, which has killed more than 236,000 Americans so far this year. Meadows traveled with Trump in the run-up to Election Day and last appeared in public early Wednesday morning without a mask as Trump falsely declared victory in the vote count. He had been one of the close aides around Trump when the president came down with the virus more than a month ago, but was tested daily and maintained his regular work schedule. 693

WASHINGTON (AP) — The CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and Google have received a hectoring from Republicans at a Senate hearing for alleged anti-conservative bias in the companies’ social media platforms. And the CEOs are being put on notice about potential restrictions that may be coming. Some lawmakers are looking to challenge the companies' long-enjoyed bedrock legal protections for online speech. The protections stem from Section 230 of a 1996 communications law. Senators in the hearing extracted promises from Twitter's Jack Dorsey, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Google's Sundar Pichai that their companies will take needed measures to help ensure election security.Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., asked the CEOs if they have a plan “if the president uses your platforms to say, on the day of the election, that there is rigging or fraud, without any basis in evidence, or attempts to say the election is over.”President Donald Trump has refused to publicly commit to accepting the results if he loses the presidential contest.
