SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A proposal to build a four-story, 48 unit apartment complex in Carmel Valley has riled some neighbors, to the point where hundreds of them have now signed a petition asking the San Diego City Council to abandon the project.The complex would be at 10211 Rancho Carmel Drive, just off the 15 Freeway near Ted Williams Parkway. It's less than a half-acre. Right now, a two-story parking structure sits on the plot of land.Plans from developer New Pointe Communities say they would build the complex on top of the parking garage, essentially creating a six-story building.People who live in the nearby Provencal community say it doesn't fit the neighborhood. They've started an online petition to stop it."That’s pretty tall, and that just doesn’t fit in" says Eric Von Waldner, who signed the petition."It’s going to take away our view, take away our privacy. There will be balconies looking right at us. I just don’t like the idea of it," he adds.Von Waldner says neighbors worry the added units will overwhelm the area's electrical, water and sewage grid.They also say it will cause traffic headaches at the signal light on Rancho Carmel Drive and Provencal Place."You got Starbucks over there. You got people that live in my community. If you add 48 more units, it’s going to be crazy," says Von Waldner.They plan to send the petition to District 5 City Councilmember Mark Kersey, asking for a new plan. The Council already has an agreement with New Pointe to sell the land.“A number of residents have contacted me about the proposed project on Rancho Carmel Drive, and I continue to welcome feedback from my constituents. Any redevelopment plans for the site will go through an extensive public process with numerous opportunities for input from the community,” Kersey said in a statement to 10News.According to Eric Edelmen, the chair of the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Council, the developer still has to submit a formal proposal to the city. They also have to ask for the area to be re-zoned to allow the extra units.Right now, Edelman says the land is only zoned for eight units.He says the last time they heard from New Pointe was at a November 14th meeting. The Community Council would have to approve the proposal first. Then it would need to pass through the Planning Commission and finally the full City Council. 2361
SAN DIEGO, California — One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family.He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk.He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife.The couple has four children, one with special needs.As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship.They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house.The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey.She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong.It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help.She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. A new study by GasBuddy claims the Golden State also has some of the most aggressive drivers.According to the study, California ranks number one for most aggressive drivers followed by Connecticut and Georgia.The study claims those aggressive habits are also costing Californians cold hard cash. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - With election results ready to come out, Downtown San Diego businesses are bracing for protests. Many business owners in the area say the memories of damage when peaceful protests escalated at the end of May are still fresh, so they boarded up windows as a precautionary step, hoping it turns out to not be needed.Related: Looters smash windows, rob stores in downtown San DiegoAldo Broussard owns Carter’s Diamonds, a jewelry store in a jewelry exchange building that houses dozens of jewelry shops and professionals. He said they boarded up the windows at their business in May and during that time saw damage to surrounding buildings, so they boarded up windows again ahead of the election. He said they took that step to protect the small-business owners inside the facility.“There’s a lot of jewelers in here who have basically all their life savings, all their work, all their tools and without it they can’t make a living so it’s more for protection for everybody in the building,” said Broussard.Broussard added that he doesn’t expect protests to cause damage, but would rather be safe than sorry.“I think overall people are good so I think it’s going to be okay. There might be a few who take advantage of the situation but I think overall it’s going to be fine,” he said.Nearby, Sushi 2 restaurant is another small business bracing for protests or unrest this week. Kuniko Holmes is the owner and said she boarded up her windows in June after receiving some damage during downtown protests. She ended up leaving the boards up through the summer because of uncertainty of the future and also because she knew November could be a stressful month when she would have to board up again.“I wanted to make sure so I don’t have to put it up and down and up and down because it’s work for people and also it costs. As a small business like we are, even putting the board up made it expensive,” she said.Indoor dining was also not allowed during that time, so she ultimately decided that if the boards would be staying up through most of the year, she would make them visually appealing.“We decided to ask local artists to put some great art as you see and it changes the dynamic of how it looks and it just looks so inviting,” she said, referencing the peace signs and hearts painted on the boards.Other downtown businesses that boarded up windows ahead of the election include Ralphs, CVS, 7-eleven and the Church of Scientology.San Diego County law enforcement agencies said they are not aware of any planned protests or possible unrest, but have extra staffing just in case. 2614
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A record 621 people died of drug overdoses in San Francisco so far this year, a staggering number that far outpaces the 173 deaths from COVID-19 the city has seen thus far. That's according to a San Francisco Chronicle report, which says the crisis fueled by the powerful painkiller fentanyl could have been far worse if it wasn’t for the nearly 3,000 times Narcan was used this year to reverse an overdose. The newspaper says the crisis is deepening because fentanyl flooded the city’s drug supply. Moreover, the pandemic has disrupted city services and left many people to use drugs alone. 620
