JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) - Caltrans will shut down all lanes of State Route 78 in Julian Friday night following a rock and mudslide. The freeway closure, which affects all lanes between Wynola Road and Great Southern Overland Stage Route (S2), may continue into the weekend. The area experienced a slide late Thursday that sent large rocks and debris into lanes. Crews limited traffic to one direction and determined rock scaling was needed to remove any more hazards. (KGTV) — An East County couple who lost their home in the Valley Fire is dreaming of a rebuild and a new, fireproof home.Earlier this month, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video of the imposing smoke plumes behind their home on West Boundary Truck Trail. It didn’t take long for the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire to reach a nearby canyon."Just like a waterfall, it was a 'firefall' down the hill. Amazing and scary," said Irving.Anita left first. Irving got out soon after, after loading up a truck bed full of belongings. He took a photo showing his property, as it began burning."My house was there and then it turned orange. Then it was a yellow ball just slightly bigger than a house. I didn’t have the heart to look back, so I just drove away," said Irving.But there was no escaping the charred reality when the couple returned. Their home of 20 years, along with two vehicles, were destroyed by the fire."Defeated. You look at it and go, 'Where do we start?'" asked Anita.They’ve just started the cleanup process, expected to take months. Their home was insured, and the couple is already envisioning the rebuild and a fire-resistant home."I don’t ever want to see my house burn down again," said Irving.Irving has sketched out this drawing of a fire-resistant home."Half of it will be in a hillside on our property. JAPATUL VALLEY (CNS) - A fire that has blackened 17,665 acres in rural eastern San Diego County remains at 87% containment Sunday, authorities said."Fire activity was minimal overnight as firefighters continue to mop up hot spots and secure the fire perimeter," according to a U.S. Forest Service news statement. "Structure defense remains a priority for values at risk. Every day the fire stays within its current perimeter, the threat to the adjacent communities continues to diminish. High pressure over Southern California will result in a warming trend into the middle of the week."The Valley fire, southeast of Alpine, has destroyed 30 residences and 31 outbuildings, damaged 11 other structures and injured three firefighters.RELATED: Resource event gets Valley Fire victims back on their feetFire activity was limited Saturday as firefighters continued to mop up hot spots and secure the fire perimeter, officials said. JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- More than 1,600 people will be without power in Julian Wednesday as San Diego Gas and Electric crews work to replace equipment. The power company said power will be turned off from noon to 5 p.m. to accommodate the work. “To minimize impact on schools, the planned outage is occurring on a day when schools in the area are scheduled to get out early,” the company said. The company also warned that the work may take longer than expected should any weather conditions or unforeseen events unfold.SDG&E says customers in the area should unplug all sensitive electrical equipment to prepare.
