SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents say they're disappointed after witnessing what they say was disrespect of the flag and national anthem at a high school basketball game. One parent captured video of the incident at Lincoln High School. They have a student at St. Augustine and say it was the second time they witnessed Lincoln High players sitting down during the anthem. The parent described the players as talking and joking around during it.A grandfather at the game, who is a Vietnam veteran, says he too was offended. He wrote a letter to Lincoln's principal and wants to sit down with him to discuss the issue. The veteran believes the players were disrespectful and says their actions were not in line with the school's mission statement.10News spoke with the school's basketball coach by phone who says he doesn't believe students meant to be disrespectful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Allied Gardens had a front row seat to a woman’s retirement.The group gathered outside a home as a pre-built granny flat was lifted into the backyard with a crane.Tula Striffler chose the option as a way to be close to her daughter.“I think it’s an economical way for me to still live my life fully and do it on a retirement budget,” said Striffler.Michael Avery owns Instant Guest Homes. He says many of his customers are using the homes for secondary income, or a way to expand their family’s living space.“These home are start to finish 90,000 dollars, everything is included except for the permit fees,” Avery said.Earlier this year, the City of San Diego reduced the cost of granny flat permits, which ranged from ,000 to ,000.After a steady process, Striffler’s home was gently placed in her daughter’s backyard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Phone and tuition scams have stole more than 0,000 from the UCSD community since July, university police warn.Police say in just two months, victims within the university community have collectively lost 2,000 to suspects claiming they were with law enforcement in their home country. The scammers would demand money or threaten the victims with detention.In the case of phone scams, scammers would call and pose as an IRA employee or officer claiming to have an open case or, for international students, law enforcement of their home country. International students should refer to their local consulate for any type of government communications.When it comes to reported tuition scams, police say scammers have been targeting students with promises of tuition reduction if they use a third-party service to pay their fees. Scammers often promise a 5% tuition discount and request the victims send the reduced tuition funds. The scammers then request the victim's university credentials to pay their tuition with fraudulent or stolen credit card info. But by the time credit card companies receive the information that the the payment was fraudulent, the scammers have already withdrawn the victims' funds.RELATED: The Venmo scam you should know aboutVictims are then left out of the money paid to scammers and still paying their own tuition.Police say students should never give out their personal information to anyone and work through UC San Diego-approved payment methods. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ocean Beach residents say they are uniting to address issues they believe stem from people living in vehicles.OB resident Michael Copley and nearly 100 others emailed San Diego Police this week, asking for officers to step up patrols in their neighborhood. "I'm just a citizen. I have no authority, I can't enforce anything," Michael Copley says. "But I was asking [police], 'please we want police presence in Ocean Beach.'"RELATED: Red curb in Ocean Beach is a fake fire zone, City of San Diego saysCopley says the large number of people living out of their vehicles in the neighborhood are fueling several community issues like vandalism and the prevalence of drugs. In a response posted to social media by SDPD officer David Surwilo, Surwilo says the concerns have been sent to patrol supervisors so that they "are aware of your community safety issues, what you are seeing and dealing with and your requests for assistance to address these issues."SDPD Capt. Scott Wahl adds, "We are out in the Ocean Beach area, seven days a week, making sure that we are addressing these issues. And it's important that the community continues to provide that information to us."The post referenced complaints pertaining to areas of Ocean Beach, Robb Field, and dog beach over vehicle campers, drug use, homelessness, and quality of life."One person sleeping in their car is not a big deal. But 100 people sleeping in their vans, that creates an impact on the community," Copley said.In May, city leaders approved restrictions on people living in their vehicles within San Diego. Part of those restriction prevent people from sleeping in vehicles within 500 feet of a school or home and overnight anywhere in the city from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.Wahl says that now, the city has more beds and parking lots available for free to those living in vehicles that can help alleviate the concerns. But according to a July report by 10News, one of the city's newest parking lots for those individuals is going largely unused.Police recommend residents report non-emergency issues on the city's Get It Done mobile app. But if it is an emergency, residents are encouraged to call the police. 2190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Next time you head off to your gate to catch your flight, make sure you look over your bin upon leaving the TSA checkpoint.Transportation Security Administration officials say the agency collected 6,030.44 in unclaimed money that passengers left behind at security checkpoints last fiscal year, between Oct. 1, 2018, and Sept. 30, 2019. Of that, ,899.09 was in foreign currency.In San Diego, airport officials say ,809.39 was left behind by travelers.TSA says the money consisted of loose change and paper currency passengers removed from and left in bins during the security screening process.While San Diego saw nearly ,000 left behind, it was nowhere close to the top five U.S. airports:John F.
