SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The threat of President Trump shutting down the southern border is causing widespread concerns in San Diego and Tijuana. Ev Meade is the director of USD's Transborder Institute. He says the impact on specific industries would be severe. "Think about the auto industry. You can't build a car in the United States or Canada right now without the part of the supply chain that's in Mexico. It's just fatal to shut that down," said Meade. He says even if the president doesn't close the border, the threat alone is damaging. "If you think about agriculture, on the other hand, Mexico is the biggest buyer of a long list of agricultural products, even if it doesn't happen, just the uncertainty that is cast over the market by doing that hurts that, it tells people we got to find another supply because we don't want to have empty shelves," said Meade. This weekend, President Trump announced he was cutting off funding to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. He also blamed Mexico for not doing enough to stop the flow of asylum seekers making their way north to the United States. Meade says cutting off aid to Central American countries will only lead to more migrants fleeing. "If you look at where it goes to, it goes to things like training the security forces, and training their immigration enforcement and strengthening judicial systems. There's some food and public health, and other things that are covered by it, but it's some real basic institutions in these societies that are pretty fragile to begin with and pulling that funding I think, I don't know anyone who thinks it's going to make them stronger, and if they're not stronger, it's not going to alleviate the pressure for people to leave," said Meade. She said cutting aid and closing the border might be a good idea."I think they need to manage their own governments and own borders, and we're not the bank of the world. "Right now, you can't live in your home town or home city, but coming 1,500 miles to the United States and getting an individual asylum adjudication, that may be too high of a bar to cross, what's option B? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center) has decided it will no longer allow armed, uniformed officers at its facilities and events. “Last year, The Center heard from over 140 Black community members at our Town Hall for the Black LGBTQ Community. Many spoke of the pain and hurt that is caused when one does not feel welcome in our LGBTQ community, including at The Center.Overwhelmingly, we heard that the lack of policy restricting the presence of armed, uniformed law enforcement officers is a barrier to the Black LGBTQ community feeling welcomed at The Center,” said CEO Cara Dessert in a letter posted to The Center’s website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego City Council Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of adding movable tiny homes to the list of options on how to offer more affordable housing to citizens.Tiny houses are similar to granny flats, but smaller. Tiny houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are equipped with the basics for living, sleeping, and cooking. They range in size from 150 square feet to 400 square feet and cost between ,000 and 0,000.Tiny homes can help create an affordable option for low-income residents that doesn’t require a taxpayer subsidy.City officials said, “A significant portion of households in San Diego can afford a movable tiny house as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The average cost of rent for a tiny home is 0 a month. A property owner would recover their initial investment in eight years. After that, the rent from the tiny house could help cover their mortgage and other expenses.”Currently, the city allows homeowners to build accessory dwelling units on their properties. With Tuesday’s approval, homeowners can add tiny homes to their properties.“Moveable tiny homes are a great option that naturally increases affordable housing at no cost to taxpayers. It’s a win for the homeowner, it’s a win for the renter, and it’s a win for the taxpayer,” said San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman. “I appreciate my colleagues support for this important housing reform.
