LOS ANGELES -- Fire crews are on scene after a small brush fire broke out in a Los Angeles neighborhood Wednesday night. The fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. in Pacific Palisades. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A China Airlines flight crew spotted what appeared to be a person flying a jet pack 6,000 feet above the ground near LAX Wednesday, less than two months after two separate airline crews reported seeing a jet pack in the Cudahy and South Gate areas.China Airlines flight 006 was approaching LAX about 1:45 p.m. when the crew "reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jet pack at an approximate altitude of 6,000 feet, about seven miles northwest of Los Angeles International Airport," the Federal Aviation Administration said.The FAA is also investigating an Aug. 30 sighting of what appeared to be a person in a jet pack about 3,000 feet above the ground in the Cudahy and South Gate areas, but investigators have not been able to verify those reports, the FAA's Ian Gregor said Wednesday.RELATED: FBI releases map of Sunday's 'guy in a jet pack' in Los AngelesAt the time of the August sightings, the pilot of American Airlines flight 1997 radioed the LAX tower to make the unusual report of somebody apparently flying at about 3,000 feet with a jet pack. The plane was flying northwest of the junction of the 710 and the Century (105) freeways, according to a map released by the FBI. More specifically, it appears the plane was in the area west of the 710, east of San Juan Avenue, north of Firestone Boulevard and south of Cudahy Park."Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack," the pilot said on the August radio transmission. An air-traffic controller -- noticeably taken aback by the report -- responded, "American 1997, OK, thank you for the update. Left side or right side?""Off the left side," the pilot replied, "at maybe, uh, 300 yards or so, at our altitude."At least one other pilot, aboard a Southwest Airlines flight that August, also spotted the unusual aviator: "Tower, we just saw the guy pass by us," the pilot reported.The LAX tower alerted an inbound JetBlue pilot to beware of "a person with a jet pack reported 300 yards south of the L.A. final at about 3,000 feet." LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Workers at Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons/Pavilions throughout Southern California and as far north as Santa Maria ``overwhelmingly'' ratified a new contract with the grocery chains, averting a potentially costly and disruptive strike, union officials announced Thursday. Officials with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, the Los Angeles-area union representing grocery workers, issued a statement saying the deal ``represents the most significant increases in wages and benefits in over 30 years.'' ``This agreement is a first step towards security good, career jobs in the changing grocery industry,'' Kathy Finn, secretary-treasurer of UFCW 770, said in a statement. ``As important as the hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements to members is the way we got to this contract -- by standing together store by store and with our communities to demand recognition of the value we earn these corporations every day.'' Union members cast ballots on the contract proposal Monday and Tuesday. The tentative deal was announced Sunday. The previous contract between the union and the grocery companies expired in March. Grocery workers in June voted to authorize a strike if a contract deal could not be reached -- raising fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. When the tentative deal was announced Sunday, Ralphs spokesman John Votava said, ``We are pleased to have worked with the union to secure increased wages, continued premium health care coverage, and pension. Our associates are the heart of our company and this agreement is a reflection of their contributions.'' According to the union, the three-year deal includes wage increases of .55 and .65 per hour depending on job classification, with pay retroactive to March. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A bout of overnight rain will have the potential to unleash rockslides, mudslides and minor debris flows in areas recently stricken by wildfires, National Weather Service forecasters said.The NWS said there's a chance of rain Wednesday evening, a virtual certainty of it after midnight amid southwest winds of around 15 miles per hour and a 50 percent chance on Thanksgiving morning, followed by a partly cloudy afternoon.Between seven-tenths of an inch and an inch-and-a-quarter of rain are expected to fall on coastal slopes and in the foothills, which could trigger slides over areas denuded by the Woolsey Fire in L.A. and Ventura counties and the Hill fire in Ventura County, forecasters said. LONDON (AP) — Archaeologists said Monday that they have discovered a major prehistoric monument under the earth near Stonehenge that could shed new light on the origins of the mystical stone circle in southwestern England.Experts from a group of British universities say the site consists of at least 20 huge shafts, more than 10 meters, or 32 feet, in diameter and 5 meters deep, forming a circle more than 2 kilometers— over a mile — in diameter.Researchers say the shafts appear to have been dug around 4,500 years ago.Scientists believe the shafts could mark the boundary of a sacred area or precinct around a circular monument known as the Durrington Walls henge, about 3 kilometers, or 2 miles, from Stonehenge.The Guardian obtained a photo of the new discovery. 776
