MSAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Monday that the city has repaired 655 miles of roads so far, which is ahead of schedule to meet the goal of 1,000 miles of roads by 2020.Averaging more than 300 miles per year puts the city ahead of schedule, even as a small percentage of repairs has required taking the roads down to the dirt.RELATED: San Diego County approves million road resurfacing project“The unprecedented investment we’ve made in road repair is showing results with more smooth streets in our neighborhoods,” Mayor Faulconer said. “There’s still a lot more work that needs to be done, but we’re making significant progress on an issue that is a top concern for so many residents.”Within the first two fiscal years of the pledge, the city fixed 595 miles of roads. Last year, an assessment showed the overall condition of city streets rose to 72 on a scale of zero to 100.RELATED: Mayor vows to fix more roads in San DiegoMayor Faulconer says if they do complete the work ahead of schedule they will assess additional roads and keep going.Click here to report potholes and road issues. MILWAUKEE — What was supposed to be a girls trip to Atlanta with a Milwaukee mother and her five daughters turned into a nightmare for the Wenszell family. A man they never met was in the station as they waited for a train to arrive. “This man, agitated, talking to himself mumbling and next thing we know, ran over and pushed my wife she ended up falling onto the track,” said Jerry Wenszell, the husband and father of the family. After Susan Wenszell was pushed her daughter jumped onto the tracks and covered her mother with her body. But that left Katie Wenszell to take the brunt of the train. “Katie jumped down, tried to move Sue off the tracks and just got her in between the tracks and the train literally went over both of the top of them,” Jerry said. The train missed Susan. Katie was hit and dragged. She lost part of her foot, her shoulder was shattered, she punctured a lung and broke most of the bones in her face. “Most said had Katie not jumped down, Sue would have come home in a box,” Jerry said. The man who pushed Susan is now facing charges. But Jerry isn’t angry and relies on his faith. “No, actually I'm not. I actually prayed for the guy,” he said. Katie is now in critical condition after the incident in Atlanta over the weekend. She faces a long road to recovery, including the potential for more surgeries. Jerry says he’s had to stay in Milwaukee to take care of the family’s young children. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Katie's medical expenses.  1595

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has signed a landmark bill that retires the last state flag bearing the Confederate battle emblem. The Republican governor signed the bill Tuesday afternoon, just two days after legislators passed it. Amid international protests over racial injustice, Mississippi was under increasing pressure to lose a symbol that many see as racist. The state had used the flag since 1894. Mississippi will not have a flag for a while. A commission will design a new one that cannot have the Confederate symbol and must have the phrase, “In God We Trust.” Voters will be asked to approve the new design. The Confederate battle flag is losing its place of official prominence in the South 155 years after the end of the Civil War. Mississippi’s Republican-controlled Legislature voted Sunday to remove the Confederate emblem from the state flag. Other states took action previously. NASCAR, meanwhile, has banned the rebel banner from its car races. The flag with the familiar X design is still visible along Southern highways and in some stores. It's far from being banished in the region. But even flag supporters are surprised by the speed with which change is taking place amid a national debate over racial inequality. 1244

More brands and businesses are becoming vocal in the movement for racial justice and equity. Some are taking it a step further, pledging donations and changes in their own practices to address workforce inequity.Adidas, which also owns Reebok, is pledging to increase the number of black and Latino employees it hires by the end of next year, saying at a minimum 30% of all new positions. The NFL also made recent specific pledges to hire more people of color in front office and coaching positions. It also made an immediate rule change that future head coaching positions need to include at least two interviews with external, minority candidates.“There's good evidence (that) both increasing the quality of a climate in the workplace and increasing the diversity of the workforce tends to be associated with better outcomes, especially in companies that are trying to be innovative in their production process, marketing and the like,” said Donald Tomaskovic-Devey, UMASS equity and inclusion expert. There are proven methods for increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. They include setting clear measurable goals, being transparent, and companies holding themselves accountable.Experts say it’s not only good for employees and business, but this shift in speaking up and change by industry leaders can spark even more influence.“You could imagine firms saying I’m not going to support the reelection campaigns of candidates who are making racist statements or stoking racial divisions,” said Tomaskovic-Devey. “Again, that’s putting your money where your mouth is.”Experts say another practical way to invoke change in the workplace is to treat complaints of bias, unfairness or discrimination as managerial problems to be solved, not legal issues. 1779

My grandmother used to take me to Cielo Vista Mall. Now it’s one more mass shooting scene. How many more must grieve before we act? #ElPaso— Pete Buttigieg (@PeteButtigieg) August 3, 2019 201
