ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - The Alpine Union School District has become one of the first local school districts to begin mandatory testing for all staff members. In partnership with Cal Fire, the pre-K to 8 school district rolled out drive-thru COVID-19 testing on Wednesday."The number that came out was beyond what we expected. It was a steady flow of staff all day long," said District Superintendent Rich Newman. So far, 65% of all staff -- about 130 employees -- have gotten a test, with results due back within two to five days."We’ve gone one step beyond most districts," said Newman.Newman says while the state requires districts test half their staff every month during in-person learning, his school district expects to test all of its staff every month. The drive-thru testing events will be held every two weeks."We want to make sure we can stay open for our students," said Newman. The testing is one component of a detailed in-school learning plan, which includes plexiglass dividers on every student desk and a thorough cleaning regimen."I had a meeting with the principals and it was very emotional, because they felt all the hard work paid off," said Newman. As for the testing, Newman says the response from parents and staff has been positive."The number one response from staff has been 'Thank you for setting this up quickly,'" said Newman.Newman hopes the testing track down asymptomatic cases and provide some peace of mind."If our staff feels safe, healthy, and taken care of, they can focus on teaching and learning with our students," said Newman.Newman says each class has assigned restrooms and outdoor spaces that will help officials with tracing if an outbreak should develop. 1706

Almost a week after Hurricane Michael shredded the Florida Panhandle, more bodies of victims are emerging. On Tuesday, a search dog discovered the body of a man in the decimated city of Mexico Beach. That brings the death toll from last week's storm to 26 across four states, including 16 in Florida, according to officials. While most of Mexico Beach lies in ruins, many evacuated residents still haven't seen what's left of their homes. They've had to wait for authorities to secure the area and complete search-and-rescue efforts before returning home. 561

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- As firefighters work towards 100% containment in the Valley Fire, business owners are cleaning up the damage left behind by the flames. Alpine Dog Ranch is a vacation ranch for dogs to say while their owners are away. When the Valley Fire started, the ranch's owner, Thomas MacKinnon, was taking care of nine dogs, including his own. He quickly rushed to get them all into a van and tried to get out, but MacKinnon says they were trapped by flames. He and several neighbors took refuge in an open field until the flames passed. Firefighters and a 747 Supertanker saved all of the structures. No one was hurt. The fire did burn a lot of the greenery on the ranch and now MacKinnon is cleaning up; repairing fencing, the sprinkler system and covering burned patches with woodchips. MacKinnon says the fire was an added challenge on top of a difficult year. Like many businesses, the Alpine Dog Ranch has been struggling. With people not going on vacation and needing a place to leave their dogs, business has been slow. MacKinnon's friends set up a Go Fund Me page to help with the ranch's repairs. A Wisconsin woman's death was possibly caused by an infection from a dog lick, the same infection that is plaguing one West Bend, Wisc. man. Earlier this month Greg Manteufel developed a similar infection, resulting in the amputation of his hands and legs. Doctors believe it was from a bacteria transferred to him when a dog licked him. Sharon Larson had just gotten a puppy. It nipped at her, causing a minor cut. A day after taking him to the vet for a check-up, Larson was rushed to the hospital. “I was told she could get struck by lightning four times and live, win the lottery twice,” said Sharon’s husband Dan Larson. “That’s how rare this is supposed to be."Dan Larson is still in shock. He thought she had the flu.“General antibiotics that they put her on didn’t do anything,” he said. Within two days at Wheaton Franciscan in Franklin, Sharon Larson was dead, at 58-years-old. “I feel like I got robbed. Lost my right arm. My best friend,” Dan Larson said. Doctors told him she tested positive for capnocytophaga. They say the bacteria, found in the saliva of most dogs, cats, even some humans, is rarely problematic and almost never deadly. But when certain people come in contact with it, it can have devastating consequences, like for Sharon. “I had no knowledge,” said Sharon’s son Steven Larson.Sharon’s son wants more answers since there is no real tracking of how many cases there have been.“What do you want people to know? To always be more cautious. cut to people think nothing of getting a simple dog bite. But even something so simple... can go wrong,” he said.  1653

AMELIA, Ohio -- They look like Muppets, according to parts of the internet. Or maybe the hall leading to a video game boss battle. The 45 red berry trees lining the White House's east colonnade instantly went viral when first lady Melania Trump unveiled the holiday decorations on which she'd reportedly worked since early August. 337
