The E.W. Scripps Company is a partner with The Associated Press and has been following guidance from their election desk on 2020 race updates.Early Wednesday morning, the AP called the presidential race in Arizona for Joe Biden. The state is continuing to count ballots, and in the hours since, President Donald Trump has significantly cut into Biden's lead.Thursday afternoon, officials said there were about 450,000 votes still to be counted in the battleground state. As of 12:30 p.m., Biden had a 2.35 percentage point lead over Trump, an advantage of about 68,000 votes. At 9 p.m. ET, a new trove of votes from Maricopa County, the largest county in the state. Trump gained nearly 11,000 votes, cutting Biden's lead to 46,257. AP executive director Sally Buzbee released the following statement regarding its Arizona projection: "The Associated Press continues to watch and analyze vote count results from Arizona as they come in. We will follow the facts in all cases."All election results remain unofficial until each state verifies its election count.Below is the AP's explanation as to how it made the decision to call the state for Biden. The Associated Press has declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner in Arizona, flipping a longtime GOP state that President Donald Trump won in 2016.The AP called the race at 2:50 a.m. EST Wednesday, after an analysis of ballots cast statewide concluded there were not enough outstanding to allow Trump to catch up.With 80% of the expected vote counted, Biden was ahead by 5 percentage points, with a roughly 130,000-vote lead over Trump with about 2.6 million ballots counted. The remaining ballots left to be counted, including mail-in votes in Maricopa County, where Biden performed strongly, were not enough for Trump to catch up to the former vice president.Arizona has a long political history of voting Republican. It's the home state of Barry Goldwater, a five-term, conservative senator who was the Republican nominee for president in 1964. John McCain, the party's 2008 presidential nominee, represented the state in Congress from 1983 until his 2018 death. But changing demographics, including a fast-growing Latino population and a boom of new residents — some fleeing the skyrocketing cost of living in neighboring California — have made the state friendlier to Democrats. Many of the gains have been driven by the shifting politics of Maricopa County, which is home to Phoenix and its suburbs. That's where Biden sealed his victory. Maricopa County accounts for 60% of the state's vote, and Biden ran up huge margins there. In 2016, Trump carried the county by 4 percentage points, which helped propel him to a win. But two years later, Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema flipped a Senate seat from Republican control by winning the county by 5 points. When the AP called the race for Biden, he was leading there by 9 percentage points.Biden flipping Arizona is a sign of Democrats' ascendant influence in the state. In 2018, Sinema became the first Democrat in three decades to win a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona. Democrats also won three statewide offices and five of nine congressional seats and made gains in the state legislature that year.In 2016, voters ousted Republican Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County's hardline sheriff, who built a national profile on his harsh treatment of immigrants. 3349

The Coca-Cola Co. says it’s laying off 2,200 workers, or 17% of its global workforce, as part of a larger restructuring aimed at paring down its brands. The company said around 1,200 of the layoffs will occur in the U.S., with around 500 of those eliminated in Atlanta, where the company is based. These layoffs come after the beverage company offered buyouts to about 4,000 employees in August. At the time, the company said their operating model had 17 business units, and they would consolidate that to just nine. The voluntary and involuntary separations, and severance packages are expected to cost the company between 0 million to 0 million, according to CNN.Coke employed 86,200 people worldwide at the end of 2019.The coronavirus pandemic has hammered Coke’s business, forcing the company to accelerate a restructuring that was already underway.Coke is reducing its brands by half, to 200, so it can focus on bigger sellers like Minute Maid juices and energy drinks. Earlier this year, they announced ZICO coconut water, Tab, Odwalla juices, and some regional sodas will be discontinued. 1106

The county of San Diego is preparing to ask the state for nearly million to repave stretches of hundreds of roads it maintains. The Board of Supervisors could vote Wednesday to seek revenue from the recent gas-tax hike to repair the roads. The roads are in all ends of the county, from Bonita to Alpine to Vista. You can see a list of the roads here (it starts on page 3)."The proposed projects will improve the overall condition of the roads and will protect roads from deterioration and costly future repairs," a county staff report said. Gov. Jerry Brown signed the billion gas tax hike into law last year. Californians already pay a series of gas taxes ranking among the highest in the nation. The tax hike raised the per-gallon tax by 12 cents last November, with future increases planned. The bill, SB1, also added a 0 fee to the annual registration for electric vehicles, starting with model year 2020."People can't afford it. I'm retired but if you're working and have to commute, I don't think people realize how much of a dent that's going to make," said Vicky Bamburger, a Bonita resident who is supporting an effort to repeal the tax that appears to be headed to this November's ballot. But those who support the increase say fixing the roads will save California drivers from expensive car repairs due to problems like potholes, and save taxpayers from larger repairs later."A small improvement now - if you have a road that needs to be covered - that's going to be so much more cost effective, cost saving in the long run," said Catherine Hill, of the League of California Cities.Local governments have until May 1 to submit their gas-tax revenue road repair requests to the state. Still, county agencies have already received millions of dollars in new revenue for road repairs, which includes major improvements to Interstate 5 in North County.  1892

The death toll in the deadliest wildfire in California history continues to increase as Cal Fire officials said on Tuesday that six more bodies were found, marking the Camp Fire's death toll at 48. The six bodies were found in Paradise, California, a town that authorities said was destroyed by the Camp Fire, which is only 30 percent contained as of Tuesday. The Camp Fire alone has destroyed 8,817 structures and continues to spread. The fire is spreading despite nearly 5,000 fire personnel responding to the fire, Cal Fire said. Unfortunately, the Camp Fire is just one of several wildfires raging currently. The Woolsey Fire, which has claimed two lives of its own, continues to spread throughout Ventura County, California. That fire has spread across nearly 100,000 acres since being spotted on Nov. 7.  858
