President Donald Trump applauded reports Thursday that Senator-elect Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, could team up with an Alabama congressman in an extremely unlikely, last-ditch effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. In a series of tweets on Thursday, Trump called Tuberville a "hero" and "a man of courage."Despite producing little evidence to support his claims, Trump has claimed there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election and has falsely claimed victory over President-elect Joe Biden.Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the election have been shot down by courts in every battleground state, federal appeals courts and the Supreme Court. Furthermore, every state has certified the results of their elections, and the Electoral College has already sealed Biden's win. However, some Republicans believe they'll be able to overturn the results of the election on Jan. 6, when Congress meets to certify the Electoral College results. It's a process that is typically a little more than a rubber stamp approval, but Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Alabama, has promised to raise an objection. Should a senator — like Tuberville — join in Brooks' objection, both the House and the Senate would then be forced to take a vote. If both chambers approve of the objection, the Electoral College votes could be thrown out. While Tuberville's objection could cause a slight delay in approving the Electoral College results, most experts believe that it would be "impossible" to overturn the election results through this process. Democrats control the House of Representatives, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he does not want Republican senators further challenging election results.Tuberville will be sworn in as a Senator on Jan. 3 — just three days before Congress meets to approve the Electoral College vote. By defying McConnell in one of his first official acts as a Senator, Tuberville risks losing the support of one of the most powerful lawmakers in Washington. However, his recent comments indicate that he plans to object to the Electoral College vote."You'll see what's coming," Tuberville said this week. "You've been reading about in the House. We're going to have to do it in the Senate."Other GOP senators have not said whether they plan to voice an objection.Tuberville, a former college football coach at Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati, defeated Sen. Doug Jones, D-Alabama, in November.Democrats in the House filed similar objections in 2001, 2005, and 2017. None were voted upon. 2544

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — A 27-acre parcel in Black Mountain Ranch once planned to be the site of a new middle school could instead turn into a Costco development. The Poway Unified School District board voted 4-0 on Thursday to pursue a long-term lease with Costco to transform the site into a mixed-use retail, restaurant, and housing complex, plus a warehouse. The district has twice declared the property at the northeast corner of Camino del Sur and Carmel Valley Road as surplus: first in 2012, and then reaffirmed in 2019. "This site has an extremely lucrative opportunity for the district and I, for one, don't see how we can turn this down," said board president Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff. "Let Costco go figure out what the community will accept."The move, however, is being met with concern from parents in the district. Chasmine Grismer, a district parent who has lived near the Black Mountain Ranch site for a decade, expressed concern over traffic, the environment, wildfire evacuation, and demand on schools. "By bringing in an apartment complex, you're going to be bringing in families, families with children, who again will need space in schools. Our schools are already impacted," she said. A spokesman for Costco declined to comment, saying the company does not address upcoming real-estate transactions. 1330

President Donald Trump had lunch with National Rifle Association leaders Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox over the weekend, he said Monday. The news was announced by the President during a meeting with governors at the White House Monday morning. The White House did not previously announce the meeting or provide a readout.Cox is the executive director of the NRA's lobbying arm, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. LaPierre is the NRA's CEO.  458

President Donald Trump formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as he prepares for the stretch run of his re-election bid.In a precedent-breaking speech that contrasted from past norms, Trump used the backdrop of the White House for his convention address. Trump spoke in front of a group of 1,500 supporters. The White House ceremony stood in contrast to typical conventions that are held in large arena before up to 20,000 supporters.Trump focused much of his speech on his opponent Joe Biden rather than his vision for a second term. Trump mentioned Biden by name 41 times, and made a number of indirect references to his Democratic challenger.Trump promises vaccineTrump joined Vice President Mike Pence’s pledge from last night in proclaiming that the US will have a coronavirus vaccine approved and ready by the end of 2020. His comments come despite skepticism from leading public health experts who say the shortened timeframe might not be enough to fully study the efficacy of vaccines."In recent months, our nation, and the entire planet, has been struck by a new and powerful invisible enemy. Like those brave Americans before us, we are meeting this challenge. We are delivering lifesaving therapies, and will produce a vaccine before the end of the year, or maybe even sooner," Trump said. While Trump said that the White House would continue heeding the advice of public health experts, the 1,500 spectators on hand were not socially distanced, and the majority of the crowd were not wearing face coverings.Trump condemns unrest in major citiesTrump joined a chorus of Republicans in condemning violence at protests in response to the shootings of police officers of black men, most recently Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. While Trump and other speakers repeatedly, and falsely claimed, that Biden has not spoken against the violence, the former vice president has directly encouraged protests to remain peaceful."In the strongest possible terms the Republican party condemns the rioting, looting, arson and violence we have seen in Democrat-run cities like Kenosha, Minneapolis, Portland, Chicago, and New York, and many others Democrat-run."While Trump has previously criticized local leaders for not using National Guard troops, there are currently guard units in Kenosha and Minneapolis.Ivanka goes lastDonald Trump’s daughter Ivanka was the last among Trump’s family members to speak at the Republican Convention.Unlike her brother Eric, Ivanka Trump avoided referring to Biden by name and kept her focus on why her father should be re-elected.“Washington has not changed Donald Trump. Donald Trump has changed Washington,” Ivanka Trump said. “America doesn’t need another empty vessel who will do whatever the media and the fringe of his party demands Now more than ever, America needs four more years of a warrior in the White House.:Protesters make noiseAs Trump spoke from the White House lawn, protesters made as much noise as possible outside of the White House. They used airhorns, instruments and drums to drown out the president. 3094

President Donald Trump plans to announce his Supreme Court nominee on Saturday. He has said it will be a woman and she will be conservative. If the nominee goes through, it would give conservative justices a 6-3 majority over their more liberal counterparts. That sets up talk about abortion, but the Roe v. Wade debate isn't all about the Supreme Court.“Enough lower courts have not decided what they think about this,” said Carol Sanger, a professor at the Columbia law school. “We, the Supreme Court, doesn't like to lead on a particular issue until the lower courts who have trials and so on have thought about it.”Under a conservative majority, the Supreme Court has ruled on an abortion case. Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts sided with a ruling that kept abortion clinics open by not requiring abortion doctors to have nearby hospital admitting privileges. The high court already ruled on a similar case out of Texas.“There is a special doctrine called stare decisis, which means when you have a case and it’s like a previous case, look to that previous case and say how did that come out,” said Sanger. “And unless there is a very, very strong reason to change that decision, you follow precedent, you follow what happened the last time this issue came up.”Sanger says enough lower courts have to rule and be split on the decision to make it to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court would need to decide it wants to take up Roe v. Wade before courts before them. Sanger believes that's unlikely to happen.“It seems pretty clear that he doesn't want to be known as the guy who had Roe knocked out under his chief justice-ship,” said Sanger. Both Justices Kavanaugh and Gorsuch said they accepted Roe v. Wade as the law of the land during their nomination hearings.Sanger says just because the justices on the court change, it doesn't mean they change laws all over again. 1887
