(KGTV) – Gov. Gavin Newsom selected California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. In a statement, Newsom said of Padilla:“The son of Mexican immigrants -- a cook and house cleaner -- Alex Padilla worked his way from humble beginnings to the halls of MIT, the Los Angeles City Council and the State Senate, and has become a national defender of voting rights as California’s Secretary of State. Now, he will serve in the halls of our nation’s Capitol as California’s next United States Senator, the first Latino to hold this office. Through his tenacity, integrity, smarts and grit, California is gaining a tested fighter in their corner who will be a fierce ally in D.C., lifting up our state’s values and making sure we secure the critical resources to emerge stronger from this pandemic. He will be a Senator for all Californians.”Padilla becomes California’s first Latino senator; the state has never had a Latino senator even though the California is nearly 40% Latino.Padilla said, “I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Newsom, and I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver for all Californians. From those struggling to make ends meet to the small businesses fighting to keep their doors open to the health care workers looking for relief, please know that I am going to the Senate to fight for you. We will get through this pandemic together and rebuild our economy in a way that doesn’t leave working families behind.”The 47-year-old Democrat has served as Secretary of State since 2015. He was previously a member of the Los Angeles City Council and was a state senator.Since Harris’ departure, Newsom had faced some pressure to name a Latino or a Black woman as a replacement.San Diego-based Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez said in a statement: "Governor Newsom made the right choice. I'm proud of the work Secretary Padilla has done to make voting more accessible for every Californian. It's been my great pleasure to work closely with him on our efforts to establish automatic voter registration, expand vote centers, and postage-paid ballots. I know with today's historic appointment, he will make us proud as our state's next Senator and ensure Californians have the representation we need in Washington."The Los Angeles Times reported that Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, is expected to be appointed by Newsom as the next secretary of state. 2497

(CNN) - President Donald Trump made his first visit to a war zone on Wednesday, receiving an enthusiastic reception from many US troops there -- some of whom may have run afoul of military rules.Video footage and the written report of Trump's visit with service members in Iraq showed the President signing "Make America Great Again" hats and an embroidered patch that read "Trump 2020."A US military official told CNN the MAGA hats that Trump signed at the Ramstein Air Base event in Germany were personal and brought there by military personnel in hopes of getting an autograph. The official contended that it was not a campaign event and that the hats were used as support for Trump, not as a statement of political support.Although the event was not an official Trump re-election campaign event, the President did declare his candidacy for re-election in 2020 soon after his inauguration.White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told CNN the hats were personal items brought by the troops in Iraq and Germany. Sanders said the White House did not distribute them.Department of Defense guidelines say that "active duty personnel may not engage in partisan political activities and all military personnel should avoid the inference that their political activities imply or appear to imply DoD sponsorship, approval, or endorsement of a political candidate, campaign, or cause."The questions arose because the hats, emblazoned with the President's signature political slogan, appeared to be brand new and because there are rules against military personnel participating in political activities while in uniform. No policy violations have been brought to the military's attention at this time, said Capt. Christopher Bowyer-Meeder, a spokesperson for the US Air Force, Europe. He added there is no rule against Airmen bringing personal items to be signed by the president. The Defense Department guidelines have the same intent as mirror the Hatch Act restrictions on political activities for civilian federal officials. In the Trump Era, officials have deemed hashtags and hats potential rule violations. Earlier this year specific guidance notified federal employees that bringing MAGA hats to work or using the terms "#resist" or "resistance" in reference to President Trump could violate the Hatch Act.Retired Rear Adm. John Kirby, a former Obama administration spokesperson and a CNN analyst, said on CNN's "The Situation Room" on Wednesday that service members having Trump sign the items was inappropriate."It is in fact a campaign slogan, that is a campaign item, and it is completely inappropriate for the troops to do this," Kirby said.Kirby assigned some blame to Trump himself for political activity around the military: "Every time he's around military audiences, he tends to politicize it, and he brings in complaints and grievances from outside the realm of military policy." 2897

(KGTV) — Even with the opening of "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" this summer, Disneyland reported a drop in attendance last quarter.Disney reported the data during an investor's call this week, noting that domestic parks saw a 3% drop in attendance in its third fiscal quarter ending on June 29. However, per-capita guest spending increased 10%, thanks in part to high ticket prices, and spending on food, beverage, and merchandise.Disney added that the lower attendance at Disneyland, specifically, was fueled by fewer annual passholder visits as the park managed the demand for "Galaxy's Edge." RELATED: Disneyland offering annual passholders a 'bring a friend' discountAt Disney World, the company says guests are waiting to visit until after that location's "Star Wars" land opens."There was tremendous concern in the marketplace that there was going to be huge crowding when we open 'Galaxy's Edge.' So some people stayed away expecting it would not be a great guest experience," Disney CEO Bob Iger said during the call. Iger added that local hotels also increased their prices around that time expecting more visits. The park also raised ticket prices "substantially" over the course of a year, Iger said.RELATED: What to see, what to skip at Disneyland's 'Galaxy's Edge'"That said, guest satisfaction, interest in the attractions and the land is extremely high. They're among the most popular thing at the park, so long term ... we have no concerns whatsoever about them," Iger said.Disney's domestic parks also experience a decrease in operating income, attributed to higher costs associated with labor and "Galaxy's Edge" expenses. The company says decreases in volume and operating income domestically was partially offset by the increase in average per capita guest spending. Per room hotel spending was also up 3% and occupancy increased 2%, the company added. 1877
