BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ministry of Public Security said Monday that the nation's police authorities had shut down 500 underground banks since 2002 in its battle against money laundering.Ten crack-down campaigns have be waged since 2002 when the ministry set up a division dedicated to anti-money laundering, in which over 100 cases involving more than 200 billion yuan (30 billion U.S. dollars) have been handled, the ministry said in a statement.The ministry has trained more than 400 police officers specialized in handling money laundering cases over the past eight years, said the statement.In order to promote international cooperation, China joined the Moscow-based Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism as a founding member state inn October 2004.In June, 2007, China joined another international anti-money laundering organization, the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force on Anti-Money Laundering.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday urged advancing the nation's health care reforms against all odds in 2011.Li, who heads the State council's leading group on health care reforms, made the remarks while presiding over the eighth plenum of the group.The meeting discussed work agendas in 2011, plans for piloting public hospital reforms, guidelines on training General Practitioners (GP) and other topics.Li said health care reforms had made great headway since they were launched one year ago, and people had received tangible benefits from the reforms. Li called for advancing the country's medical reforms against all odds during the meeting held in the capital city on Tuesday. Li urged improving the health insurance system so that people with major diseases would receive better financial protection.Also, Li stressed streamlining the centralized procurement and distribution of essential medicines so that the medicine system covered most government-sponsored grass-roots health institutions.China began implementing the essential medicine system in 2009 in a bid to reduce costs for patients. Essential medicines are heavily subsidized so hospitals can sell them at their cost.Further, Li urged training grass-roots medical personnel, and staff the nation's 50,000 grass-roots medical institutions with a certain number of GPs so patients would have easier access to medical services.In the public hospital reforms, Li said priority should be given to county-level hospitals that served 900 million people. Capacity building of county-level hospitals was pivotal to improve the affordability and accessibility of medical services.

BRUSSELS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and China Monday signed an agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of disaster risk management between the two sides.European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva and visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement for a joint project totaling 9 million euros (11.7 million U.S. dollars), among which 6 millions euros (7. 8 million U.S. dollars) will come from the EU.As the first bilateral project in disaster prevention, it is aimed at strengthening China's disaster management system with the support of the EU and its member states.EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva (R) shakes hands with visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Nov. 29, 2010. CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping held talks with South African President Jacob Zuma here on Wednesday, calling for all-round cooperation and richer content of the comprehensive strategic partnership and strengthened coordination in international policies.During the talks, Xi first conveyed the warm greetings from Chinese President Hu Jintao to South African President Zuma.Xi hailed the Beijing Declaration on the Establishment of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed by the leaders of the two countries during Zuma's visit to China in August this year, saying that it has lifted China-South Africa relations to a new high and will guide the bilateral relations in the new era.Xi, who arrived here on Tuesday for a four-day official visit to South Africa, said the main purpose of his visit is to co-host with South African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe the fourth plenary session of the China-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC).Xi said this plenary session marks a significant step in fulfilling the goals proposed by the two sides in the Beijing Declaration and BNC serves as an important platform to push forward bilateral cooperation in all areas and further implement the consensuses reached by the leaders of the two countries.He said China is willing to work together with South Africa to promote the all-round cooperation, hoping that the two sides will continue to maintain closer high-level political contacts, and further deepen pragmatic cooperation especially in the areas such as trade, economy, agricultural technology and professional training.China wishes to strengthen close coordination in key international issues with South Africa, said Xi. China would also like to coordinate with BASIC countries on occasions of the United Nations such as in the forthcoming climate change conference to be held in Cancun, Mexico.Xi noted that China is to strengthen communication and cooperation with South Africa within the framework of the China- Africa Cooperation Forum so as to realize peace and development in the African continent.Xi also introduced the basic content and China's experience in formulating the 12th Five-year Plan (2011-2015).For his part, Zuma spoke highly of China's role in international affairs, saying that the South Africa-China relations are strategic.South Africa hopes that the Chinese friends will play an active role in South Africa's newly-launched New Economic Growth Path including the key projects in infrastructure construction of the African continent, said Zuma.Also on Wednesday, Xi met with Speaker of South African National Assembly Max Sisulu.

  

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will never seek hegemony, regardless of its growing power, Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai reiterated the official stance Friday.Cui made the remarks at the second Lanting (Blue Hall) Forum in response to a question on whether China will gradually ignore its former leader Deng Xiaoping' teaching of "maintaining a low profile."Cui said that although China's state power had greatly strengthened over the past 30 years after the reform and opening up, China would not change its foreign policy or its development goals, "as it's not in accordance with China's long term interests."Cui also said it was true that China has made notable progress over the past few years, but it was also true that China still lagged far behind the United States.The Lanting Forum, initiated by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a platform for communication and exchanges between officials, the business community, academia, media and the public.The forum aims to create a channel to facilitate discussions on foreign policies and issues of common interests.The theme of the second Lanting Forum is "China-U.S. Relations in the New Era."
