CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a 33-year-old transient in connection with a series of fires set in a river bottom area of Chula Vista since early summer.Chula Vista police said Alejandro Gonzalez was taken into custody Sunday after officers responded to a reported brush fire near the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue.According to police, Gonzalez was spotted by officers “walking quickly away from the scene of the fire.” Officers made contact with him and during questioning they found Gonzalez “in possession of several lighters.”Gonzalez was described as a transient known to frequent Chula Vista’s river bottom area.In a news release, police said: “During questioning by officers, Gonzalez admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river bottom area over the past 5 months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices. Gonzalez was taken into custody by officers and later booked into county jail on multiple counts of arson.”Police linked Gonzalez to the following fires:May 24: 2300 Faivre StreetJune 14: 2300 Faivre StreetSept. 16: Third Ave. and Beyer St.Sept. 20: 1700 Fourth Ave.These fires erupted in the river bottom area since April, but investigators have not located or identified a person connected to them:April 30: Fourth Ave. and Beyer St.June 5: 1700 Fourth Ave.June 13: Fourth Ave. and Main St.Aug. 14: 100 Jacqua St.Meanwhile, Chula Vista police and fire investigators are still trying to determine who is responsible for setting a series of fires in the city from Sept. 17-19. CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. – A black bear is thanking its lucky stars that a Wisconsin family was in the right place at the right time.After a day of fishing on Sunday, Tricia Hurt told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she, her husband and their son were returning to a dock on Marsh-Miller Lake when they spotted something strange in the water.As the family approached, they realized it was a young bear that was struggling to swim because it had a cheese ball container stuck around its head.They felt compelled to help free the bear from the tub, worrying that if they didn’t, it wouldn’t be able to make it back to short safely.So, Tricia says her son Brady maneuvered their boat while her husband leaned into the water to tug on the container. It took multiple passes, but they eventually managed to free the animal from the plastic. Tricia says the bear then swam back to shore.The family believes that if they had not helped the bear, it may have not made it to shore, because it was breathing heavily and the container had filled with water.Tricia documented their rescue efforts on video and posted it online. As of Tuesday morning, her Facebook post has been shared more than 18,000 times.The family says the bear had actually been spotted several times over the past few days and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had been looking for it, but without any luck. 1389

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of parents hosted a rally Monday evening calling on Chula Vista Elementary School District officials to reopen schools for in-person learning. Parents said they want the district to move forward with a phased reopening approach, a plan that was supposed to start on Oct. 26.However, the district halted the repoening plan at the beginning of October, citing concerns about rising COVID-19 cases in two specific ZIP codes -- 91911 and 92154.Parents argued that there is a safe way to go back to in-person learning, but they feel the district isn't ready. CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo said he does want to get children back in the classroom and is hoping cases in those ZIP codes go down so they can reopen by the end of the year. He added that the district is still working with employee associations and labor groups in hopes of coming to an agreement so teachers can have everything they need to safely do their job. 976

CINCINNATI -- A fire at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Monday evening summoned 40 firefighters and caused ,000 in damage but did not harm any humans or animals, according to District Fire Chief Randal Freel.The fire started in a restaurant food smoker around 5:25 p.m., Freel said. The zoo closes at 5 p.m. on Mondays, so there was no danger to customers.Crews spent 15 minutes containing the blaze. Although the Fire Investigative Unit had also been called to the scene, crews had not identified the cause of the fire by 9 p.m. Monday. 556

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed before crashing into the side of a building in Chula Vista Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the initial call came in around noon as a drunk driver. Witnesses reported seeing a man in a tan SUV slumped over and followed him.Police say the SUV then slammed into a gate and crashed into the side of a self-storage building traveling roughly 10 to 15 miles per hour on Industrial Boulevard near L Street.When police arrived, they discovered that the man was dead inside the vehicle. Police confirmed later in the day Wednesday that the man was shot. Shortly before the crash, witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots. Investigators are currently working to get surveillance video from the self-storage facility. Police are also asking that anyone with information on a possible suspect contact them.  932
