SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Neighbors are shaken up after a home invasion in University City. “I wouldn’t have expected it because I feel like this area UTC especially is pretty safe,” says neighbor Alana Schnoor. San Diego police got the call early Monday morning, around 1 a.m, from the home in the 5300 block of Toscana Way.Two men wearing masks went inside of an unlocked apartment. One of them pointed a gun at the people inside, while the other grabbed phones and laptops. Police say one of the victims grabbed the gun and fought the robber. The intruder hit the man with the weapon, and both robbers ran out. “It’s a safe area. I just wouldn’t have expected someone with a gun going into an apartment like that,” said neighbor Amy Kaido. Police say the intruders were wearing green jackets with black stripes and black pants. Both men were in their 20’s. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Residents in a South San Diego Apartment complex worked together to fight a fire that started in the patio.At around 10:45 Sunday morning, San Diego City Fire Rescue teams responded to the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road. Heavy smoke was billowing from the patio of a downstairs apartment. "I called 911 automatically, and that's when the person who lives upstairs came running out,” Alexa Delgado said.Delgado had just arrived at the Oro Vista Villas to visit her mother when she saw the flames. "It started popping, and the fire started coming out,” she said. It was in that moment of chaos that she found herself and several neighbors step up to help. One neighbor pulled the smoke alarm, others smashed fire extinguisher boxes and started spraying down the patio, and she protected the neighbor's pet birds, all before the fire department arrived. Engine 30’s Fire Captain, John Wilson said what the residents did in the first minutes of the fire helped suppress the flames. "There was an alarm that was going off upon our arrival, so the smoke detectors did their jobs and got everyone out safely,” Captain Wilson said. Delgado says what happened today was a true testament to the word “community.”“A bunch of neighbors helping and asking if anyone living there, went upstairs to see if anyone was in there and helping out."Fire investigators are still looking into what exactly caused the patio fire.  No one was inside the home when the flames ignited. San Diego (KGTV)- The entertainment world is left in shock after the death of Chadwick Boseman. The Hollywood star lost his battle with colon cancer. He was just 43 years old. Local physicians are stressing the importance of getting screened.For four years, the actor fought a silent battle with this cancer. He was diagnosed in his late 30's, much younger than the age many get tested."What we have seen is in younger people, the rates of colon cancer are going up and have actually gone up every decade, and the reasons for that are not known," says Dr. Abi Olulade with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Olulade says the rates of colon cancer are higher in the African American community."Not only is there an increased rate in colon cancer, but there's an increased chance of dying from this if you are African American," says Olulade.The American Cancer Society estimates 12-percent of colorectal cancer diagnosis this year will be in people under the age of 50."People have put off their screening, which is dangerous," says Dr. Walter Coyle with the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.Coyle says due to the pandemic, fewer patients are coming in for screenings."The American Cancer Society says we should start screening people at age 45 and up now. All the other societies say 50 unless you're African American."Coyle says a healthy diet can help lower the risks of this cancer. He hopes the news of famous actor Chadwick Boseman will encourage people to get their screenings."I couldn't imagine someone that young and vigorous dying. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - With election results ready to come out, Downtown San Diego businesses are bracing for protests. Many business owners in the area say the memories of damage when peaceful protests escalated at the end of May are still fresh, so they boarded up windows as a precautionary step, hoping it turns out to not be needed.Related: Looters smash windows, rob stores in downtown San DiegoAldo Broussard owns Carter’s Diamonds, a jewelry store in a jewelry exchange building that houses dozens of jewelry shops and professionals. He said they boarded up the windows at their business in May and during that time saw damage to surrounding buildings, so they boarded up windows again ahead of the election. He said they took that step to protect the small-business owners inside the facility.“There’s a lot of jewelers in here who have basically all their life savings, all their work, all their tools and without it they can’t make a living so it’s more for protection for everybody in the building,” said Broussard.Broussard added that he doesn’t expect protests to cause damage, but would rather be safe than sorry.“I think overall people are good so I think it’s going to be okay. There might be a few who take advantage of the situation but I think overall it’s going to be fine,” he said.Nearby, Sushi 2 restaurant is another small business bracing for protests or unrest this week. Kuniko Holmes is the owner and said she boarded up her windows in June after receiving some damage during downtown protests. She ended up leaving the boards up through the summer because of uncertainty of the future and also because she knew November could be a stressful month when she would have to board up again.“I wanted to make sure so I don’t have to put it up and down and up and down because it’s work for people and also it costs. As a small business like we are, even putting the board up made it expensive,” she said.Indoor dining was also not allowed during that time, so she ultimately decided that if the boards would be staying up through most of the year, she would make them visually appealing.“We decided to ask local artists to put some great art as you see and it changes the dynamic of how it looks and it just looks so inviting,” she said, referencing the peace signs and hearts painted on the boards.Other downtown businesses that boarded up windows ahead of the election include Ralphs, CVS, 7-eleven and the Church of Scientology.San Diego County law enforcement agencies said they are not aware of any planned protests or possible unrest, but have extra staffing just in case. 2614

San Diego (KGTV)- People in North Park say they’re fed up with rushing water and flood damage from recent water main breaks. There have been at least four major water main breaks, since 2017, in the same area. The latest break over the weekend was located on Myrtle Avenue near Park Villa Drive. Neighbors were left without water for almost eight hours. They tell 10News they have been trying to get the city to fix the lines in the area for years. “In the past 12 years, we’ve had seven… five on my street, two on the side streets,” says neighbor Linda Nelson. Nelson has been living in her North Park home since 1980. She says they’ve had some breaks in the same spots. “What happens is they patch it up and then a year or two later it breaks where they patched it.”The city says the concrete pipe was over 50 years old. They are in the process of replacing all cast iron pipes around the city. Then they will then assess the concrete ones. The city hopes to have all the cast iron pipes removed by 2023. But with a fast-growing community, neighbors feel the infrastructure in areas like North Park should be first on the list. “They want more apartments on the transit lines, which mean North Park,” says Nelson. “If they increase the density and they don’t fix the infrastructure that we have that just puts more pressure on it. Until they can make it right for the folks that lived here for a long time, I don’t think we need any more people.” 1457
