BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) - While China disagrees with the so-called "Group of Two" (G2), its cooperation with the United States is indispensable for finding solutions to many problems of the world, said Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai Friday.At the second Lanting Forum, Cui spoke highly of the cooperation the two countries have conducted and called for further coordination in more areas."Both China and the United States are countries of major influence on international affairs. The two countries have conducted effective consultation and coordination in dealing with regional conflicts, fighting against terrorism, maintaining the international nonproliferation mechanisms and coping with major international issues," Cui said.He said the two countries made important contributions to help the Asia-Pacific region and the world work their way out from the financial crisis. Their active coordination promoted the successful holding of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) high-level negotiations in Copenhagen and Cancun.The two countries also share same demands in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and working for its denuclearization, Cui said, noting the two countries are negotiating with all parties to ease the situation.Saying no country could handle the emerging global challenges without effective international cooperation, the vice foreign minister said it is also a common will of international society that the two countries would join hands and make more contribution for the world's peace and common development.The Lanting Forum, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a platform for communication and exchanges between government, the business community, academia, media and the public.The Forum aims to create a new channel to facilitate discussions on foreign policies and issues of common interest by interested parties.The theme of the second Lanting Forum is "China-US Relations in the New Era."

OSLO, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 200 overseas Chinese in Norway demonstrated here on Friday to protest against the Nobel Committee's decision to confer this year's Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, a convicted Chinese criminal.The organizers said the overseas Chinese, who joined the demonstration near Oslo city hall despite cold weather, were from 13 Chinese communities.The protestors held banners reading "Liu Xiaobo Is A Criminal!""No Meddling in China's Internal Affairs!" "Peace Prize = Political Tool!" WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday rejected a zero-sum formula on U.S.-China relationship, saying that the two countries have much more to gain from cooperation than from conflict.Delivering a speech on the future relations between the U.S. and China at the State Department, Clinton said it does not make sense to apply zero-sum 19th-century theories of how major powers interact in the 21st century."We reject those views," she said, referring to views which depict China's growth as a "threat" or U.S. policy on China as " containment."The State Department described the speech, delivered to inaugurate an annual forum dedicated to veteran U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, as setting stage for a state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao next week.Clinton said that the world is moving through uncharted territory and needs new ways of understanding the shifting dynamics of the international landscape, a landscape marked by emerging centers of influence, but also by nontraditional, even non-state actors and the unprecedented challenges and opportunities created by globalization.This is a fact that is especially applicable to the U.S.-China relationship, she said, noting that the engagement between the two countries can only be understood in the context of this new and more complicated landscape."We are in the same boat. BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Traffic congestion has eased "obviously" in Beijing since authorities launched a string of new, stricter traffic rules and opened five new subway lines last month, a local transport official said Wednesday."On average, the duration of traffic jams has been reduced by more than two hours per day, from 3 hours and 55 minutes before the new year to the current 1 hour 45 minutes since Jan. 1," said Li Xiaosong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of Communications.Li's committee has unveiled an index system of Beijing's traffic congestion, the first for the city.According to the system, 0-2 signified traffic was "smooth," 2-4 "generally smooth," 4-6 signalled "slight congestion," 6-8 "moderate congestion," and 8-10 "heavy congestion," Li said."Before the New Year, Beijing's congestion index usually stood above 8.2, but it has been 6 since Jan. 1," she said.Li attributed the improvement to the new traffic rules and subway lines.Massive traffic jams have long been a headache for Beijing, a city of 20 million people and 4.8 million vehicles. Last year, an average 2,000 new cars hit the city's streets every day.On Dec. 23, authorities in Beijing announced they will slash new car registrations to ease traffic gridlock. This year, the city will allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered, about a third of the number of last year.Moreover, Beijing municipal government agencies and public institutions were prohibited from increasing the size of their vehicle fleets over the next five years.Other measures include higher parking fees in the city's central areas, and stricter traffic rules for cars registered outside Beijing.An odd-even license plate number system was introduced to allow cars to be driven every other day in peak hours in some congested areas.Beijing opened five new suburban subway lines on Dec. 30 with a combined length of 108 km, bringing the city's total number of subway lines to 14 and the total length to 336 km.Beijing was building more subway lines, Li said.The number of lines in the city would reach 19 by 2015. Then, their combined length would total 561 km. By 2020, the total subway length would increase to 1,000 km, she said."Developing public transport, especially rapid rail transit, is an important move for Beijing to ease traffic congestion and improve urban functionality," she said.Li Feng, who lives in Daxing, a suburban district in southern Beijing, told Xinhua Wednesday that he had felt the positive changes in Beijing's traffic."I used to drive at a speed of only 20 km per hour when I entered and left the city in the morning and evening rush hours, but now I can drive at 40 km per hour," he said.Yet many people are waiting to see the long-term effect of the measures as Beijing still faces pressure from the huge demand for private cars.The Beijing transport authority on Sunday revealed it had received 215,425 new car license applications, after this month's application period closed late Saturday night.But only a tenth of the applicants will get license plates this month, after a lottery is held on Jan. 26.
