(KGTV0 - An East County mom panicked about the challenges of distance is calling upon her neighbors for answers.The Ascher family moved from Connecticut to El Cajon nearly two weeks ago. Along with the stresses of the move, there is the reality of distance learning, which proved challenging for Megan Ascher and her kids back in march. Her kids are entering kindergarten, and 2nd and 6th grades. Both Ascher and her husband work full time."Feeling overwhelmed and completely lost on how to begin or end this journey," said Ascher.She was lost, but she found her answer online. After Ascher saw a similar group in San Diego, she created an El Cajon Facebook group called 'Neighbors Helping Parents.'"The concept is to get neighbors, parents, and families working together and supporting each other," said Ascher.That support will run the gamut, from neighbors sponsoring a child's school supplies, printing out homework or picking up a lunch at the school if the parents are tied up."It does take a village, especially during a pandemic," said Ascher.Ascher's 'village' includes neighbors with and without school-age children, including some retired teachers ready to step up. Special education teachers have volunteered their time."I have neighbors willing to help with distance learning, tutoring online and going into the homes of families," said Ascher.Ashcer says the group will also help organize learning pods. Just two days after starting the group, some 120 people have joined."It says there is this big sense of community, and it's really good to see that," said Ascher.Ascher is just beginning to work out how this will be coordinated, but she says the panic is gone, as she leans on her neighbors."In the end, by banning together, I hope we can help our kids thrive and succeed," said Ascher. 1830

DURANGO, Colo. – The young bear that was burned in the East Canyon Fire in June was released back into the wild this week not far from where it was found, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.The 2-year-old bear had been recovering at CPW’s Frisco Creek rehab facility in Del Norte from burns he suffered during the fire. CPW said the bear weighed only 43 pounds when he was first captured in the fire.But after undergoing salve treatment on his paws, and having his bandages changed 16 times over the course of a month, he recovered and was moved from a pen with concrete floors to one with trees and hiding spaces mid-July, where he spent the past monthMichael Sirochman, the veterinary technician and manager at Frisco Creek, said the bear was 110 pounds and had seen its paws toughen up before he was released Monday.“He’s now about the weight he should be for a two-year-old bear and is in good shape for going into the fall,” Sirochman said.CPW officers originally found the bear on June 16 walking near a pond on the east side of the East Canyon Fire, which burned in June outside of Durango. Officials said the bear was released not far from that location on Monday.CPW said the bear originally hesitated for a moment as it looked at and smelled its new surroundings but then jumped from a CPW truck and ran into the forest. (KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school.
