FORT HOOD, Texas —The family of missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen met with officials from the Army base and the Criminal Investigation Command (CID) Tuesday and said foul play is suspected in the woman's disappearance.Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and an official with the League of United Latin American Citizens accompanied the family.Vanessa's mother spoke and said in Spanish that while she's grateful Army officials invited them for an update today, she felt sick visiting Fort Hood. She says the Army took too long to search for her daughter.She says she asked Fort Hood to shut down the base and look for Vanessa as soon as she went missing and they didn't do it."I told them to search barrack by barrack and they never did it. I seek justice, that they respect Vanessa as a soldier, as someone who is serving this country," said her mother. She demands the people on base are investigated, especially the sergeant who she says her daughter said was sexually harassing her."I told them I want her alive. She entered alive," said the mother."If my daughter appears dead, close this base immediately," her mother said while crying. "I want her alive, for the love of God. I need my daughter with me. She is my life. That's why I'm fighting until they bring her back and the people who are responsible pay.""Investigate from the top to the bottom, everyone is responsible."Garcia said Fort Hood officials said they are convinced foul play is involved at this point and the criminal investigation is ongoing.The 3rd Cavalry Regiment commander, Col. Ralph Overland, has appointed an investigating team led by a senior investigating officer to conduct a commander’s investigation into allegations that Vanessa Guillen was sexually harassed.Congresswoman Garcia says there are discrepancies about when Fort Hood officials say they started searching for Vanessa and when the family tried to contact the base.Congresswoman Garcia and the Guillen family's lawyer also said the Army told the family the base has regular check-ins through the day. The sergeant who checked their barracks at some point after she went missing reported that Vanessa was there but later admitted he did not actually see her."We gotta remember this is a story about a family who is hurting," said Garcia. "We are dealing with a tragedy."Mayra Guillen, Vanessa's older sister, said she hopes the community keeps searching for Vanessa.The 20-year-old soldier was reported missing from Fort Hood on April 22. For those fortunate to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, many are finding they now have more time to commit to home construction projects large and small and everything from retiling a bathroom to a large home renovation."In many communities in the home space itself, what we’ve seen is after that initial decline and slowdown where many of these businesses were struggling, a pretty pronounced uptick now in the level of business coming through," said Nate Chai of Thumbtack. Thumbtack is an app that helps people connect with contractors and other service providers.Chai says more people are in their homes spending more time looking around at the projects they want --or need -- to get done."Pretty much everywhere we’re just using our homes more often. Things break down. That annoying leak becomes something that has to be addressed urgently," says Chai.Thumbtack has guidance for both homeowners and contractors on how to get their projects done safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chai encourages people to have open conversations with contractors about who the project will be completed in a safe, socially distant manner."Things like are you wearing a mask, are you bringing a crew and if so what will that crew be doing? Where will they be? Are you going to clean and sanitize the space afterwards? So those questions are really important to get squared away from both parties up front," said Chai.And for contractors, showing your clients first and foremost that you value their safety."We have professionals who, for example, have changed their profile pictures to show themselves in a mask. So, that adds that extra layer of security and awareness and understanding from the start, to proactively bring up their safety measures," said Chai.Fillip and Jamie Hord, founders of Horderly, which is a professional organizing company, are currently in the middle of a home renovation project. They have some advice for how people can safely prepare their homes for construction during a pandemic. "We actually recommended the contractors put up the plastic sheets sectioning off the room and then they can do zippers on those. That was [our] first request and Jamie has been wiping down the door handles before they come and when they leave," said Fillip Hord, who is also Chief Organizing Officer of MakeSpace.The couple also recommends decluttering and clearing out the space you want worked on, requesting contractors wear masks, stay six feet apart and wash their hands frequently. But also be prepared for your home project to take longer than expected."Instead of having 14 different contractors and three different trades in your house at one time, you're going to have the carpenter one day. The next day maybe one electrician. The next day maybe a plumber and then the plumber has to wait for the electrician to come back," said Fillip Hord.Still, they say getting the projects done right now has its benefits."Now is the perfect time to take time to get to those projects you’ve been wanting to get to for a while in your home. There’s really no better time," said Jamie Hord."From what we saw at the start of the pandemic is people sort of hunkered down. There was quite a drop in the number of projects coming through our platform but in more recent weeks, what we’ve seen is it actually accelerating pretty fast," said Chai.In fact, at the end of March, Thumbtack says home renovation projects were down 40 to 50%. For many of us, the word “outbreak” has taken a more personal meaning this year.For the people of Austin, Indiana, it’s not the first time they’ve dealt with an outbreak.“We’re an itty-bitty town, but we got big city problems,” said Austin resident Ethan Howard.By 2015, the opioid crisis had ravaged Howard’s hometown for years. People became hooked on painkillers and often used needles to take them. The same syringes would be passed from person to person.Dr. William Cooke arrived in Austin in 2004. Back then, he was the town’s only doctor. In fact, he was the town’s first doctor in a generation. He says he saw several issues in the southern Indiana community, including people’s health to poverty.As the opioid crisis started to wrap its grip across parts of the country, Dr. Cooke says he started to see another health issue spread in the community, starting around 2010.“What we saw was a really quick in dramatic rise in Hepatitis C around that time,” Dr. Cooke said. “Any community that has a high Hepatitis C rate is at high risk for an HIV outbreak.”By 2015, the opioid crisis had ravaged the city for years.“Opiates were my devil,” Howard recalled.Howard says his mom convinced him one day to go get tested, after he says he had shared a needle with his cousin.His test revealed he was positive for HIV.“I thought I was dead. I thought it was a death sentence,” Howard said.He wasn’t alone with testing positive for HIV in Austin.“In that first year, we had almost 200 cases,” Dr. Cooke said. “It was almost a quarter of the HIV cases in the state and this is a town of 4,200 people.”Austin had become home to one of the largest HIV outbreaks in rural America ever.Dr. Cooke helped convince then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to change his stance on needle exchanges.“It took a few months, but eventually, he signed the executive order allowing us to operate syringe service programs here,” Cooke said.That program, access to addiction recovery services and powerful HIV medicine has led to a dramatic drop in new cases.In 2015, Scott County, Indiana had 157 new HIV cases. In 2019, the county had only five, according to the Indiana Department of Health."The medications today are powerful enough and well tolerated enough that you should not spread the disease to anyone else and you should never worry about dying from HIV,” Dr. Cooke said.Dr. Cooke says Austin is still working to overcome some of the social challenges he found when he first arrived in the community in 2004.It’s been five years after the largest HIV outbreak in Indiana history. Like many communities across the world, this one is now dealing with the impacts of COVID-19.Nurse Jessica Howard is a proud native of Austin. She’s seen the challenges her community has faced over the years. She also sees the good in Austin, pointing to a local church pantry providing food and clothes to those in need.Jessica Howard in charge of coronavirus testing at Dr. Cooke’s office. She grew up in Austin and knows many of the patients that come through the door.As of early July, Scott County has not seen a large amount of coronavirus cases like other parts of the country, but the nurse worries about her patients that struggle with addiction who are now in quarantine and could relapse."These are people these are our people and we have to take care of them and protect them,” she said.Austin has come a long way from where it was in 2015, when HIV spread through a large part of the community.Last year, Dr. Cooke was named by American Academy of Family Physicians the AAFP 2019 Family Physician of the Year for his efforts to help stop the 2015 HIV outbreak.As for Howard, he says medication has made it so HIV is no longer detectable in his blood.He now travels as a musician and points to music as a source of strength that helped him through the darkest of times.“I fought and clawed my way out of a dark place,” Howard said.His fighting spirit is one this small Indiana city has used to battle through crisis before.“We’ve been through a healthcare disaster before,” Dr. Cooke said. “And there is a light on at the end of a tunnel.”It’s a mindset Dr. Cooke says we need now, as we all fight this new crisis of a coronavirus pandemic. 4221

Following the same path as the ill-fated Titanic voyage of 1912, a cruise ship named Titanic II will hit the open sea in 2022.According to a report from USA Today, Blue Star Line's ship features the same cabin layout as the original ship and will carry the same amount of passengers (2400) and crew (900).The ship will sail from Dubai to Southampton, England and then to New York, following the same route the original ship took before it sank on April 12, 1912.Despite being a replica of the original, the Titanic II features modern navigation technology.
