SAN DIEGO (CNS) - It took emergency crews about 20 minutes Monday to free a tree trimmer who wound up trapped in a palm tree, upside down, about 30 feet above the ground in a San Carlos-area neighborhood.The work accident in the 8000 block of Dicenza Lane, south of Mission Gorge Road and west of Golfcrest Drive, was reported about 8:15 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.After firefighters got the victim, a man in his 40s, out of the tree, medics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital for evaluation of complaints of dizziness and nausea, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. 605

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four local restaurants and gyms are suing the state and county over its coronavirus restrictions as a shutdown of indoor operations looms for many county businesses.The lawsuit was filed Thursday in San Diego Superior Court on behalf of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop, Home & Away Encinitas, Fit Athletic Club and Bear Republic.The suit comes as San Diego County is slated to shut down indoor operations for nonessential businesses at midnight due to its recent entry into the most restrictive, purple tier of the state's coronavirus reopening plan.The businesses allege that San Diego's increased case numbers are not a result of exposures at restaurants, gyms and other types of businesses that will be impacted by the impending closures. The lawsuit cites recent figures indicating restaurants/bars, retail businesses, places of worship, schools and gyms make up a small percentage of confirmed community outbreaks.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten recently submitted an adjudication request to the state seeking to have San Diego County remain in the red tier. The request was rejected by the state last week."Penalizing the impacted sectors for case increases is wrong, as these sectors continue to do the right things, while trying to weather the ongoing pandemic and the back forth of reopenings," Wooten's request states.The businesses allege in their complaint that they may be forced to shut down permanently if the shutdown is not averted. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - At least three vehicles were burned Wednesday morning when a carport caught fire in the parking lot of a Mountain View apartment complex, but firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the apartments nearby, authorities said.The blaze was reported at 5:10 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment building on Benfield Court, off South 45th Street between Ocean View Boulevard and Imperial Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Firefighters responded and found a carport engulfed in flames along with at least three vehicles in the parking lot, a SDFRD dispatch supervisor said. Crews knocked down the flames within 20 minutes and no adjacent structures were damaged.No injuries were reported.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 792

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A teenage Oceanside resident was arrested Thursday on suspicion of gunning down another young man last week near Vista Transit Center.Homicide detectives arrested 19-year-old Issac Martinez on Tuesday in connection with the death of Jonathan Ruiz, 20, according to sheriff's officials. Martinez was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail.Deputies responding to reports of gunfire shortly before 2:30 p.m. Nov. 4 found Ruiz gravely wounded on a dirt path off the 200 block of Olive Avenue in Vista, Lt. Michael Blevins said. Medics took the Vista resident to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.Witnesses described seeing two teenage boys or young men running away from the transit center following the shooting, Blevins said.Officials have not revealed a possible motive in the case or disclosed what led investigators to identify Martinez as a suspect in the slaying.  983

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pair of thieves stole a safe and pistol-whipped a woman during a home-invasion robbery in the Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood, police said Tuesday.The robbery happened shortly before 5:10 p.m. Monday at a group home on Blackstone Court, a short, dead-end street off Meadowbrook Drive south of Jamacha Road, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man and a woman entered through the back door of the home, then began asking around for the manager of the home, Buttle said. When a 40-year-old woman told them the manager lived upstairs, the pair began looking around and the male suspect spotted a safe.The man picked up the safe and an altercation ensued, during which he pistol-whipped the 40-year-old victim, the officer said. The man then carried the safe outside to a black Ford Escape SUV.The pair of thieves were last seen in the Ford heading north on Meadowbrook Drive toward Jamacha Road, Buttle said.No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available. 997
