SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students from around San Diego are using a modern medium to learn and inspire.The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, which has chapters at 22 local schools, has launched the "Chavistas Podcast."Once a month, they interview a local leader, learning that person's story. They hope it can inspire other kids to reach for the stars."We feel that, as a community of Chavistas, that we can get a good message of community out there," say Ariana Gallegos, the club supervisor.Gallegos has a background in radio broadcasting and uses that to help the kids craft their interviews."It's a beautiful experience that I get to bring the students to a setting that sometimes is hard to be at," says Galleos. "But it allows them to see that if I can do it, you can do it."Students in the club say it's been a fun experience. They hope other kids will listen and learn."When it turnes out good, it's really nice, just feeling like you accomplished something good," says Wilson Elementary 7th Grader Mecklin Montgomery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host drive-in live concerts and a movie series this month.The concerts and movie screenings will be held at the former Nordstrom parking lot at Westfield North County at 8 p.m. Spaces for more than 250 vehicles will be made available and spaced apart to keep listeners distanced.The scheduled shows start on Aug. 14 with a showing of the classic musical Grease and continue on Aug. 15 and 16 with a performance by Jersey Boys stars Christian Hoff and Travis Cloer. Hoff, a Tony Award-winning actor, is best known for his portrayal of the role Tommy Devito from the Four Season’s and Cloer is the longest-running actor to play the role Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys.Tickets to the general public will go on sale on Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. here or by calling 800-988-4253. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday morning's rain caused crashes on roadways, damage to construction zones and danger in Sunset Cliffs.One of those crashes had Cristal Ramirez in the passenger seat. "I was supposed to drive for brunch but my friend picked us up and I was glad because I didn't want to drive in the rain," she said.She said as they took the connector from the 163 to the I-8 West they started sliding, "I think we were driving a little too fast because of the rain." Ramirez said they grazed the guardrail. The tires were out of alignment, making it necessary to call for a tow truck."We were like what the heck this is wild!" She said.The group didn't let the accident ruin their afternoon, they continued on in Ramirez's car to Sunset Cliffs.The danger still lurking behind yellow caution tape, draped along the edge of one part of the cliff. From where she and her two friends stood, you could see the cliff carved away underneath the seemingly solid edge."I didn't think about it, I was like 'Oh we're close to the edge.' and we started playing around and I was like, 'Oh we probably shouldn't be playing this close to the edge," Ramirez said when she realized the danger.South of Sunset Cliffs, another problem at the Silver Strand State Beach exit off SR 75. The rain caused metal plates covering trenches in a construction area to bend inward.Crews rushed out to reinforce the plates to make them safe, adding wood supports. An engineer told 10News the construction should be finished by next week, if the weather doesn't delay the work. 1559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students spent Friday gathering their belongings and saying goodbye to their peers at the Art Institute of San Diego.The school's operator, the for-profit Argosy University, shut down the campus after court documents alleged it misused millions of dollars in federal funds. The move left many students angry and wondering what's next. "I feel so empty," said Marjan Razavi, about six months from graduating and ,000 in debt. "I lose my job and my education at the same time."The Institute's closure is the latest for-profit run school to abruptly shut down in San Diego. In 2018, Brightwood College closed its doors. In 2016, the giant I.T.T. Technical Institute shuttered. Derek Abbey runs the Veterans Center at San Diego State University, a population he says the for-profits target because of their education benefits. Abbey said the schools often make grand job promises, but charge higher tuition than public universities (a federal study showed double), but spend a lot of that money on advertising. "They're getting out in front of the populations that they expect are going to come to their school, and often times those are under represented populations that don't know the higher education systems," Abbey said. Abbey teaches the alternative options like attending community college and transferring to a public university - many now offering the convenience of online classes. About twenty colleges participated in a transfer fair at the art institute building Friday. Students also can request loan forgiveness, however that would involve canceling some, or all, of the credits they've earned so far. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Department of Homeland Security is responding to the caravan of Central American immigrants prepared to enter the United States through the border with Mexico.At least 600 people from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are traveling to Tijuana, according to freelance journalist Jorge Nieto. About 100 arrived last night. Eventually the group will enter the U.S. at the San Ysidro port of entry.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen released a statement on the caravan.“DHS continues to monitor the remnants of the ‘caravan’ of individuals headed to our Southern border with the apparent intention of entering the United States illegally. A sovereign nation that cannot – or worse, chooses not – to defend its borders will soon cease to be a sovereign nation. The Trump Administration is committed to enforcing our immigration laws – whether persons are part of this ‘caravan’ or not.”RELATED: Migrant caravan heads toward US-Mexico borderDHS warned members of the caravan that they may be turned over for prosecution under illegal entry laws.
