Matt Bevin on April 26 signed House Bill 528, which makes Kentucky the first state in the country to establish a blanket presumption "that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child" in every divorce case."This should lead to less fighting between parents because we're not pitting parents against parents anymore in a winner-take-all situation," National Parents Organization Kentucky chairman Matt Hale said. "We think that'll lead to less parenting conflict and better outcomes for children."The law includes provisions to disqualify unfit parents based on histories of domestic violence or significant mental health problems as well as physical distance that would make co-parenting impractical.In general, Hale said, the new law will ensure children don't automatically "lose" a parent to divorce and parents' relationships after divorce don't have to become hostile over custody issues."What kid wouldn't want both of their parents in their life?" divorced mother Alexandra Beckman said. (KGTV) - A Jamul woman whose home was destroyed by the Valley Fire is grateful for the "miracle" just feet from her burned house.Around 4 p.m. Saturday, single mom Kimberlee Jones was with her kids, ages 5 and 3, inside their home on Bunny Drive when she smelled the smoke."The plume was huge, black and brown. I screamed, ran inside, and grabbed my kids," said a tearful Jones.With no time to take anything, Jones put her kids and their dog in the truck, drove off, and got to safety. About an hour later, she and a friend tried to go back with a trailer for her horses, 11 of them in several outside paddocks. A few miles from her home, she was turned away by deputies. She took a photo of the raging flames, which had moved past her property. She didn't know the fate of home and horses."I just kept praying things would be okay. From the direction of the fire and the winds, I knew we probably would not have a home to go home to," said Jones.A day later, the fears about her home were confirmed. She says she will always be grateful."The things I could never replace are alive and well. JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A squirrel found in Morrison, Colorado, on July 11 tested positive for the bubonic plague.This is the first known case of the plague in the county this year, according to Jefferson County Public Health. It's not an uncommon sickness to see in rodents year to year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scientists believe the plague bacteria circulates in low rates of rodent populations regularly.The department did not release any other information on the animal.Both humans and household animals can become infected with the plague without proper precautions.Humans may become sick with the plague through bites from infected fleas, a cough from an infected animal, or direct contact — such as a bite — with the blood or tissue of an infected animal, according to the health department.Dogs and cats are also susceptible to the plague, though cats are more vulnerable to it. While dogs may pick up and carry plague-infected rodent fleas, cats can contract the plague from flea bites and can die without treatment and antibiotics. If you believe your pet is sick, call your veterinarian. Jefferson County Public Health also recommends talking to your vet about flea prevention if you live near wild animals, including prairie dog colonies.Symptoms of the plague include:· Sudden onset of high fever· Chills· Headache· Nausea· Extreme pain and swelling of lymph nodes, within two to seven days after exposureIt can be treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Charles Evers, the older brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers and a longtime figure in Mississippi politics, has died in Mississippi. He was 97. A coroner says Evers died of "natural causes" Wednesday in Brandon. Medgar Evers was a Mississippi NAACP leader who was assassinated outside his Jackson home in 1963. Charles Evers in 1969 became the first Black candidate since Reconstruction to win a mayor's race in any multiracial town in Mississippi. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1971 and for U.S. Senate in 1978, both times as an independent. He was later a Republican but publicly supported Barack Obama for president. 671
