BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Monday evening hosted a gala to mark the traditional Lantern Festival.     Top leaders including President Hu Jintao and representatives from Beijing's intellectual circle attended the event.     Prior to the gala's opening, Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, addressed the participants on behalf of the CPC Central Committee. The CPC Central Committee hosted a get-together here on Monday to mark the Lantern Festival    He said the year 2008 was very extraordinary, during which the CPC Central Committee with Hu as the General Secretary led the Party and the nation to win the victory in combating unusual natural disasters, to successfully host the Olympics and Paralympics, and complete the mission of flying the Shenzhou VII manned spacecraft.     The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of new China, and it is also a pivotal year to face big international and domestic challenges and realize new development in promoting the Party and the country's causes, he said.     The official urged the intellectual circle to shoulder the historic mission and continue to contribute wisdom and strength to the country's reform and opening-up drive and the socialist modernization.     Other leaders attending the gathering included Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang.     The Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, is an occasion for family reunion. It marks the formal end of lunar New Year festivities.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday called for increased efforts of democratic parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce to promote the development of a poverty-stricken city in southwest China.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the call at a working conference on supporting the construction of Bijie, a city in Guizhou Province.     Bijie was approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, in 1988 as a trial zone featuring ecological environment protection and construction, development and poverty-alleviation.     Jia said the significant economic and social achievement made in Bijie over the past 20 years exemplifies the enormous advantages of the political system of multi-party cooperation and the political consultation system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Jia outlined three major tasks for Bijie's future development: development and poverty alleviation, ecological construction and population control must be firmly grasped.     He also called for efforts to explore new ways to develop the region.     Efforts should be made to pursue leap-forward development in both economy and society in the region, he said.     In the same meeting, Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, said the construction of Bijie trial zone had made significant phase achievements.     The region, where the poor once struggled to have adequate food and clothing, was on its way to becoming a place where the people can generally lead a well-off life, he said.     Over the past two decades, people from the democratic parties offered enormous support to develop the hilly hinterland region that is home to more than 20 ethnic minorities.     They helped to contribute to local education programs, training of migrant workers, building local medical institutions, constructing hydropower stations and helped tackle prevailing ecological problems including desertification.     The CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization of the Chinese people, serving as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC, and a major manifestation of socialist democracy.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, will conclude its annual session Thursday morning.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, is to deliver a speech at the closing ceremony.     The China National Radio, China Radio International and China Central Television will live broadcast the event.     The country's major news websites, including www.xinhuanet.com run by the Xinhua News Agency, www.people.com.cn run by the People's Daily and www.china.com.cn run by the China International Publishing Group will cover the closing ceremony to be held in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     The annual session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee started on March 3. During the session, political advisors deliberated the work report of the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee and a report on how the suggestions and proposals from CPPCC members were handled since the last session.     They also attended the the Second Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) as nonvoting delegates. BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday called for innovation and more breakthroughs in key technologies in the country's machinery industry so as to make it globally competitive.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks when attending an award ceremony for role models of the machinery industry.     Jia, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, urged efforts to strengthen the sector's innovative capacity and to make progress in key technologies to accelerate and optimize its structural upgrading. TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met late Monday with executives of major Japanese media, urging media of both countries to make due contributions to the advancement of Sino-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that both Chinese and Japanese media need to adopt a responsible attitude to report issues concerning bilateral relations and situations of their respective countries in line with the principle of authenticity, objectivity and comprehensiveness in a bid to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.     The media should also proceed from the general situation of Sino-Japan relations to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, focusing more on news reports that are beneficial to closer bilateral cooperation and providing more information that is conducive to China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations, he said.     Exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two nations, such as "Beijing-Tokyo Forum" and "China-Japan Media Dialogue", help to establish new channels and forms for frank, in-depth and rational dialogues as well as a platform for the two peoples to deepen their mutual understanding, he said.     Executives of key Japanese media such as public broadcaster NHK,TV Asahi, The Yumiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News Agency said that it is the common aspiration of both peoples as well as their historical responsibility to promote the steady and sustained growth of Japan-China relations.     They also made proposals on advancing exchanges between media of the two countries, expanding bilateral cooperation on economy and trade and improving feelings the two peoples harbor toward each other.     On Tuesday, Li visited the headquarters of The Yumiuri Shimbun and NHK, inquiring in detail about the management and operation of the two Japanese media.     Li arrived here Sunday for an official goodwill visit. Japan is the third leg of his four-nation tour, which has already taken him to Australia and Myanmar. Li is to conclude his visit to Japan Wednesday and leave for the Republic of Korea.
