SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 13-year-old Tierrasanta boy is battling for his life after family members say he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.A week ago Sunday, Grant Eyles started throwing up while his mother drove him and his siblings back from Los Angeles.  He quickly developed a fever, but didn't get worse until Thursday, when he lost mobility on his right side and became confused.His mother says a battery of tests pointed to bacterial meningitis, where membranes around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed, and it started with a common ailment."It was a complication essentially from a sinus infection.  The infection breached the sinus cavity and went into the brain," said family friend Vanessa Bredehoft.Over the weekend, seizures forced doctors to place Grant in a medically induced coma.  Grant remains in critical condition.County health officials say many strains of bacterial meningitis do not require an alert for person-to-person prevention, and this appears to be one of those cases.A fundraiser dubbed "Dance for Grant" is scheduled for March 3rd from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Studio K Dance and Fitness.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family's expenses. 1221

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A classic Corvette nearly careened into a family's home Friday night, with a teenager behind the wheel. "Oh yea, we were just on the other side of the wall that she was just inches from hitting," said Tyler Churchill. El Cajon police say the 16-year-old driver was probably driving too fast down the hill."We have a lot of really nice cars that live up the street," Churchill said. "They come flying by all the time."She lost control, ending up with the car backward and on top of some cement blocks.Churchill and his family came running out when they heard the crash."We were all just hanging in the garage," he said. "I was changing a dirt bike tire, we heard a really long screech and a kind of gnarly crash, and we couldn't see anything because it was really dusty."Thankfully, the driver and everyone else made it out okay. "The first thing we did was run out and make sure she was ok," Churchill said. "I just can't believe she came down that driveway, missed cars by a few inches, missed my house by a few inches, I mean it was really just inches from everything, it was crazy." 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A day-long technology fair promises to give senior citizens all the tools they need to stay up-to-date in the digital age.San Diego Oasis will host the tech fair at the Grossmont Center movie theaters on Tuesday, October 15."We're covering all areas of life," says Oasis CEO Simona Valanciute. "We want to show how technology can make it more fun, more safe and more connected."Classes at the fair will cover iPhone basics, podcasting, micro-mobility options, voice-enabled tech, cloud storage, identity theft, cord-cutting and more.Norma Mendenhall has taken a handful of iPhone classes at Oasis already. She says this kind of education is vital for her peers."As a senior, sitting at home, thinking that's not for me, I can't do that, I'm nervous about it, this is the place to take all of that doubt away," says Mendenhall.That advice is the same thing San Diego County officials want to spread. According to the County, there will be 1.2 million people above age 65 by the year 2030. Making sure they all are connected is key to keeping them safe."We've really never seen this kind of demographic shift," says Valanciute. "So, we all need to plan for this."The fair is free to anyone over 50, but San Diego Oasis wants people to register on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A brief pursuit involving a stolen BMW ended Wednesday morning near a nursing home parking lot.The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday when a new model BMW was reported stolen in Santee.Two hours later, San Diego police spotted the BMW traveling westbound on state Route 94 near the Euclid Avenue exit.When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to pull over and sped away. With police in pursuit, the BMW made its way onto northbound Interstate 805, then transitioned to Interstate 15.The driver exited on Adams Avenue, crashed into a wall, and then got back on northbound I-15.After exiting Camino Del Rio South, police said the driver parked the stolen BMW in a nursing home parking lot in Mission Valley and ran away. Police found him a few blocks away and arrested him.The driver's name and the charges he faces were not immediately confirmed. 901

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A free course is helping people with brain injuries rebuild their sense of self. Offered at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) class is a noncredit/non-fee course. It supports people recovering from ABIs like brain trauma, stroke/aneurysm, brain tumor, brain infection, and anoxia. SDCE's ABI curriculum equips students with the tools needed to achieve daily tasks and long-term goals to support their transition back into career and education. Classes emphasize rebuilding a sense of self through cognitive retraining, personal development, communication, academic skills, vocational exploration, coping strategies, creativity development, and advocacy awareness.For traumatic brain injury survivors like Marine Corps veteran Mario Sanders, the program has been lifechanging."No one is ever prepared for life with a brain injury, this program definitely gave me the strategies, the techniques; it made me able to cope with it, it made me able to live with it," said Sanders. The Camp Pendleton Marine was in a severe car accident in 2016. He was hospitalized for six months and had to re-learn how to walk again."One minute I'm being a Marine, the next I'm in the hospital confused and dazed, I couldn't walk, I had no idea what happened," said Sanders. Today he suffers from memory problems and weakness on his left side, but Sanders is far more accepting of his injury."Life with a brain injury is hard, but it's not impossible."Sanders is dually enrolled at San Diego Miramar College and will complete an Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer Degree.
