BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) -- China would step up efforts to accelerate the transformation of its economic development pattern to achieve sound and fast growth, said Vice Premier Li Keqiang Sunday.Li made the remarks when delivering a speech to the China Development Forum 2010 held in Beijing. BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Thursday that the civilians and army should develop favorable interactions to secure both economic and defense development.The government will mobilize various social resources to support the modernization of and various military demands of the army, said Hui at a meeting here.It will also work to better protect the legal rights and interests of servicemen and their families, he said.Hui also hoped the armed forces could contribute to the development and stability of the Chinese society.To develop close army-civilian relations, the government and armed forces should work together to solve problems that common people and soldiers care most and well settle the disputes between the army and localities, so as to well safeguard the fundamental interests of the army and civilians, he said.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China defended its move to reduce its holdings of U.S. Treasury securities, saying the United States should take steps to promote confidence in U.S. dollar .Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the comment Thursday when responding to questions on China's sale of U.S. Treasury securities last December.Qin said the issue should be viewed from two perspectives.He said on the one hand, China always followed the principle of "ensuring safety, liquidity and good value" in managing its foreign exchange reserve. And when it came to how much and when China buys the bonds, the decision should be made taking into account the market and China's need, so as to realize rational deployment of China's foreign exchange property, he said.And on the other hand, the United States should take concrete steps to beef up the international market's confidence in the U.S. dollar, Qin said.The way to view the issue was similar to doing business, he said.China trimmed its holdings of U.S. debt by 34.2 billion U.S. dollars in December 2009, leaving Japan the largest holder of U.S. Treasury securities, the U.S. Treasury Department reported on Feb. 16.As of the end of November last year, China held 789.6 billion U.S. dollars of U.S. Treasury bonds.

BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- China faces potential challenges in maintaining food security despite years of good harvest, a legislator said here Wednesday.In some areas, farmland is often used illegally for non-agricultural purposes or abandoned by farmers who move to work in cities, posing the most serious threat to grain production, said Liu Hui, who is also deputy director of the administration of grain in the eastern Anhui Province.Other challenges include natural disasters, low scienctific and technical level in grain production, backward infrastructure, and low grain prices that dampen the enthusiasm of both farmers and local governments.The deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), or the top legislature, made the remarks two days before the NPC annual session starts.Liu suggested that the government should clear the obstacles in the grain production and circulation and increase financial input in major grain producing areas to prevent possible decline in output.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, exceeding 500 million tonnes for the third consecutive year, data from the National Bureau of Statistics revealed.
