SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters in San Diego are rallying around a beloved firefighter suddenly in the fight of his life, after a cancer diagnosis."His nickname is 'Big Joe,' because he's bigger than life," said firefighter Russell Castillo.Castillo says Engineer/Paramedic Joe Odom, 49, is known as the light switch in a room."His smile lights up a room. His energy lights up a room. He makes everyone feel valued ... It’s our time to return that love," said Castillo.It’s been an emotional time for the 23-year veteran of San Diego Fire-Rescue. He recently discovered some swelling in his groin area. Doctors diagnosed him with lymphoma, cancer that begins in the immune system. He’s awaiting more testing for a prognosis.It comes as Odom’s wife Lisa battles serious health issues, including a lung condition and lupus."She’s giving me inspiration for what’s she’s been through," said Odom.Lisa is immunocompromised. Odom, as a paramedic on the front lines, has been trying to keep her safe, while still serving the community during a pandemic."It's scary for a lot of folks. I just want to be there, anyway I know how ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Francis Parker School officials say a vendor that handles some of the school's backup data was victim of a ransomware attack in May. The school says third-party cloud computing provider, Blackbaud, Inc., notified them on July 16 of the cyberattack. Criminals demanded payment in return for destroying information they copied from Blackbaud's database, the school said.School officials warned parents that the compromised database may have included contact information, birth dates, and a history of relationships with the school, including donation dates and amounts. The school said the attackers did not access credit card information, social security, or other personal financial information and had no access to the school's systems.Blackbaud paid the ransomware and says based on the nature of the incident and investigations with law enforcement, there's no reason to believe any data went beyond the cybercriminals or was, or will be, misused.Francis Parker officials said they are reevaluating their relationship with Blackbaud. Retail giants like Kohl’s and Target have announced huge holiday openings, with Kohl’s planning to hire 90,000 holiday associates. Target is also opening up 130,000 seasonal jobs. Although big box stores are hiring a lot of seasonal employees, local businesses are also increasing staffing.
