SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several US Navy Sailors put on their uniforms on their days off to help deliver meals to San Diego-area military veterans. Meals on Wheels President Debbie Case said they deliver 500,000 meals every year and about 42 percent of those meals go to veterans.“To see the active duty and the respect that they have for these veterans is incredible,” said Case.Meals on Wheels makes 1,400 deliveries every day. That means more than 500 are for veterans.Case added they also started delivering to disabled veterans no matter how old they are or when they ended their service. 610

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students are furious about a new dress code rule for girls at one of San Diego’s most prestigious private high schools. Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley announced Friday girls would no longer be allowed to wear skirts. That led to a backlash among students, who signed a petition to reverse the change. “I think that the ban is very sexist,” said student Lana Owad. In a letter sent to parents and students, CCHS said the dress code exists to foster a faith-based environment where students are focused on learning and not outward appearances. CCHS has issued thousands of hours of detention related to the lengths of girls’ skirts. The school dress code posted online indicates girls were allowed to wear skirts or skorts that were not excessively tight or form fitting and were no shorter than 3 inches from the top of the kneecap while standing upright.“We’ve had them tailored in the past because of the restriction on it. We spent money on buying different skirts because they ban other styles for us to wear,” said student Riley Staal. Mimi Cleary said the change was prompted by adults, not students. “No one wants the skirts going, like, literally, no one wants the skirts gone. I think only the principal and teachers want the skirts gone,” said Cleary. Under the new dress code, girls can wear pants, Bermuda shorts, or capri pants. The school said girls aren't the only ones having dress code problems: the administration will also be holding boys more accountable about their facial hair next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Shanna Ben-Moshe says the Torrey Pines Glider Port is one of her favorite places in San Diego.But on a visit last month, she saw something that ruined the trip.“I didn’t really know what to do because I was so shocked to see that in a place that I go to all the time," Ben-Moshe said.She's talking about a remote control plane - with a Nazi swastika painted on the rudder.“My great-grandma is a holocaust survivor,” Ben-Moshe said. “She was in Auschwitz for a long time. She lost all her family.”Ben-Moshe took a picture of the plane just before she left. She shared it with Brian Blacher, who co-runs a nonprofit group called Shield of David, which fights anti-Semitism.Blacher went back to the gliderport to investigate. The plane wasn't there, but a different pilot explained that it's common for people to fly German replica warplanes.“It's hurtful," Blacher said. "We've got a big Jewish community, we've got holocaust survivors living here. He's like, 'it's a plane, what are you so upset about', kind of deal."It's unclear who flew the remote control plane, and there wasn't anyone flying those kinds of planes when ABC 10News went to the gliderport on Wednesday. Robin Marien, the flight director at the gliderport, declined to comment on the swastika plane. He noted, however, that radio control pilots do tend to fly planes with vintage design.Ben-Moshe, now back in college in Wisconsin, says this won't stop her from going back to the gliderport. “It's a place that I love," she said, "and I don’t want anything to take away from that." 1575

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- School superintendents from South Bay, Cajon Valley, Escondido and Chula Vista Elementary came together for a virtual roundtable Wednesday. The meeting comes days after Governor Gavin Newsom released a mandate saying students can only return to campus when the county has been off the state’s watchlist for two weeks.The discussion focused on tackling challenges for the upcoming school year. All four districts say one of the main issues is a lack of funding.“I listened to the governor speaking about how money has come to school districts,” said Dr. Katie McNamara, superintendent of South Bay Union School District. “It’s good to note that none of that money has arrived yet.”She says they’ve had to dip into the district’s general funds to pay for things like PPE and improving distance learning models.Cajon Valley reopened in-person summer programs last week and say they will be staying open.The County Office of Education says the governor’s order does not apply to camps or day cares.“We have almost 5,000 students on campus, today, right now in a version of summer school that we're calling child care.”The Chula Vista Elementary Union superintendent, Dr. Francisco Escobdedo says they’re paying close attention to testing.“In order for us to feel safe our contagion levels have to lower, the curve has to plateau.”Escobedo adds they’re working on providing more internet hot spots for families who need it. 1446
