ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning of a Salmonella outbreak linked to contact with pet turtles. The CDC says at least 21 people across 13 states have been infected with the outbreak strain Salmonella Oranienburg, seven of which have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported though. “Epidemiologic and traceback evidence” indicate that contact with pet turtles is the likely source of the outbreak, according to the CDC. The agency says 12 of 17 ill people interviewed reported coming in contact with red-eared sliders and other turtles that were larger than four inches in length.The CDC says illnesses started on dates ranging from May 29 to Sept. 3. Ill people range in age from less than one year old to 80 years old, with the median age being 24. Turtles can carry Salmonella germs in their droppings while appearing healthy and clean. The CDC says those germs can easily spread to their bodies, tank water and habitats. People can get sick after they touch a turtle or anything in their habitats. Salmonella symptomsMost people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria.The illness usually lasts four to seven days and officials say most people recover without treatment. However, the illness may be so severe in some patients that they need to be hospitalized. The infection can spread to the intestines to the bloodstream and then other places in the body. AUORA, Colo. – The coronavirus epidemic is having a major impact on small Asian-run businesses in the United States. Some places say the number of customers has dropped by half. The Pacific Ocean Market has been a staple of Asian American businesses in Aurora, Colorado, for years."There is such a variety of places to eat and different types of food and things you don't normally see in the ordinary market," said one customer of the market. Within the last month, business at the market has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride since the new coronavirus first surfaced. "With people panicking across the country, we've heard stories in New York saying there's no more rice and Atlanta there's no more rice, so people have been continuing to stock up on that," said Betty Lam, one of the two daughters of the owner of the market. The outbreak began in China and quickly spread across Asia. Since then, a growing number of coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the U.S. and customers seem to be staying away from Asian American businesses as a precaution.According to The New York Times, business at shops that sell Asian products dropped by 70 percent in the first two weeks of February. The Chinese Merchants Association in San Francisco says foot traffic in their Chinatown district dropped by 50 percent."It's a little off and on right now,” said Lam. “We're not too sure how it's going to go." Lam says she’s already heard of businesses being affected."From the restaurants we work with, we have seen and heard that they're not doing very good and there have been a lot of customers and loyal customers who haven't been going to their restaurants due to the coronavirus." As President Donald Trump moves forward with plans to build additional physical barriers along the southern border, his administration will have to contend with a slew of lawsuits challenging the national emergency declaration allowing him, in part, to do so.So far, at least four lawsuits have been filed challenging the declaration. At Dayton Consolidated School in Maine, one student has inspired a big change to the curriculum. Morey Belanger, a 6-year-old kindergartener, is the school's first deaf student. To make her feel welcome, the school embraced the opportunity to teach all the students some sign language.Sign language posters now line the walls of hallways, and students have learned how to sign more than 20 words including colors, letters and words related to school."Morey -- without even knowing it -- has taught us so much," said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro. "She has brought a culture to our building that we didn't have before."The school installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom, including core subjects, music and computer class. Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education.The kindergarten class is also getting some help from Morey."Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet," Sampietro said. "The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her."Morey's mom, Shannon Belanger, said her family has been blown away by how supportive the school has been."I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," Belanger said. "I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it's fun."To celebrate the students' hard work, the school invited a real-life princess who knows sign language to come speak to students this week."We wanted to show our students that this isn't something they can only speak with Morey," said Principal Sampietro, who said most students in their rural Maine school have not encountered many people with hearing impairment. "We wanted to show them that signing happens in all kinds of settings."Morey's mom said she loves art and performing.
