MILWAUKEE — Eight Sisters at Notre Dame of Elm Grove, a retirement home near Milwaukee, died from COVID-19 in a week despite the home’s best efforts.“The Sisters, were being extra careful in terms of getting their meals in rooms and they can’t congregate together,” Sister Debra Sciano, Provincial Leader of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province said. “More testing, being tested twice a week for the virus.”Sciano says they are heartbroken to lose these eight women. MSAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Monday that the city has repaired 655 miles of roads so far, which is ahead of schedule to meet the goal of 1,000 miles of roads by 2020.Averaging more than 300 miles per year puts the city ahead of schedule, even as a small percentage of repairs has required taking the roads down to the dirt.RELATED: San Diego County approves million road resurfacing project“The unprecedented investment we’ve made in road repair is showing results with more smooth streets in our neighborhoods,” Mayor Faulconer said. “There’s still a lot more work that needs to be done, but we’re making significant progress on an issue that is a top concern for so many residents.”Within the first two fiscal years of the pledge, the city fixed 595 miles of roads. More than seven months after Hurricane Irma a Vero Beach, Florida woman is still feeling the effects of the damage.Her vehicle was totaled from flooding and sold. But that sale is still costing her because of one item she left behind on the car: her license plate.Now, her family wants to keep anyone else from making the same costly mistake.Jamie Portell’s mother lives at Indian River Estates assisted living in Vero Beach.Portell rode out the storm with her mother there.The next morning, they realized her mother’s car flooded.“The seats, the electric, she couldn’t adjust anything,” Portell explained. The carpet was soaked.They called the woman’s insurance company, State Farm, and said someone came out, looked at the car, totaled it and arranged for it to be towed away.About a week later, Portell said she took her mother to a local State Farm location to pick up a check.“We didn’t think anything more about the car, until about four months later she received, from the state of New Jersey, a bill with the picture of the back of her car,” Portell said.The letter was a toll road fine.“She was very upset not knowing what had happened to the car,” Portell said.  They called State Farm and asked the agency to take care of the mishap.“Another 3-4 weeks later, she gets another bill from the state of New Jersey with another picture of her car,” Portell said. It was another fine.“Called the insurance company again and said 'I thought this was taken care of, can you please look into it, ' ” Portell said.This month, they did not get a bill and hope this matter has been resolved.But, they learned a lesson.“Definitely remove your plates. You don’t think about those things needing to be done, you just assume your agency is going to take care of that,” Portell said.A State Farm spokesperson told Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach in a statement: "While I am unable to speak to the specifics of this claim due to customer privacy reasons, I can share in general that we typically encourage customers to remove all personal belongings and items from the total loss vehicle prior to being towed, including their personal license plate. State Farm works with an auto salvage vendor to dispose of the salvage vehicle in the form of a salvage sale. If personal property was not removed from the vehicle, that property may remain on the vehicle throughout the sale. We encourage customers to contact their claim representative should they discover personal property has remained on the vehicle, so measures can be taken with the customer to help track down personal property." 2633

More than 10,000 pounds of chicken is being recalled due to possible contamination by "foreign materials," specifically metal.  Empire Kosher Poultry Inc. says the raw chicken breasts were packaged on November 2 and have the number "P-1015" in the USDA inspection mark. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live next to the 8th hole at the National City Golf Course are fed up with damage from errant tee shots."It's a huge problem," says Karen Hovik. She says golf balls have broken three windshields on her car and left countless dents and scratches."I watch people, and they try to swing like Happy Gilmore while they're filming it," she says, noting that golfers take aggressive swings and don't seem to care where their ball lands.A chain link fence lines the property between the golf course and the condo complex. Hovik and her neighbors want the city or the course management company to put up tall nets, similar to the ones near the driving range."It's not just property damage," says Hovik. "Somebody could get really hurt and injured by that." Hovik says she's been hit by golf balls several times while walking near her home.A representative from the golf course told 10News they take the issue very seriously, and they've posted signs along the course telling the golfers they are responsible for any damage done by bad shots. They also say they plan a full safety review of the course this year, and that's one issue that will be addressed.Representatives from the National City Parks and Recreation Department have not returned our calls for comment. 1308
