The City of San Diego was awarded a million state grant that will help save food, save the planet, and save people.  The city will use a majority of the grant to convert its composting system at the Miramar Landfill into a closed system.  A news release from the city said that will reduce air emissions and continue to divert tons of food waste from the landfill.The City of San Diego currently keeps more than 100,000 tons of food waste out of the landfill by composting or making sure it’s diverted to food rescue non-profits before it’s thrown away.“It’s getting tossed because people don’t find the need for it or it’s got a slight cosmetic defect,” said Aviva Paley of Kitchens for Good, a food rescue that feeds hundreds of people a day by using food that could have been thrown away.“You can still make really good food with stuff that you just have to clean it up a little bit,” said Kitchens for Good Chef Trainer Theron Fisher.“It is so heartbreaking to see how much food goes to waste in this country,” said Paley.A portion of the state grant will allow Kitchens for Good to expand its operation.  It fed 35,000 people in 2016.  It would like to feed more than 50,000 by 2018.It would keep more food out of the landfill and feed more people who need meals.  Paley said one in six San Diegans go hungry every day.Another benefit for the Kitchens for Good program:  The cooks who prepare the meals are going through a 12-week training program to prepare them for culinary careers.  Paley said most of the participants have overcome obstacles from crime and drugs to mental disabilities.  The program opens them to a career they could otherwise never reach. 1718

The five suspects accused of abusing 11 children at a New Mexico compound were training them to commit school shootings, prosecutors said Wednesday.If the defendants were to "be released from custody, there is a substantial likelihood defendants may commit new crimes due to their planning and preparation for future school shootings," according to the court filings.The complaints did not provide further details about the alleged training.Allegations against the suspects come in the wake of the discovery that 11 starving children had been living in a filthy compound in Amalia, New Mexico, that lacked electricity or plumbing.Authorities raided the compound on Friday as part of their search for Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, a child with severe medical problems who was allegedly abducted from Georgia by his father, Siraj Wahhaj, about nine months ago.A boy's remains were found at the compound on Monday, police said, although it is not yet clear whether the remains are those of 4-year-old Abdul-Ghani.Five adults -- including Siraj Wahhaj, another man and three women who are thought to be the children's mothers -- each face 11 charges of child abuse related to the neglect and abuse of the children.None of the defendants has been formally charged. The CDC is changing their recommendations for travelers, urging them to pay attention to local and state recommendations, and dropping their 14-day quarantine for international or out-of-state travelers.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated their travel requirements Friday, according to multiple media reports. They now advise travelers to "follow state, territorial, tribal and local recommendations or requirements after travel." Previously, the agency recommended a 14-day quarantine for those returning from international destinations or any area with a high concentration of coronavirus cases.The guidelines still urge travelers to limit their risk of infecting others by social distancing and wearing a mask. “You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can still spread COVID-19 to others," the CDC states on their website.There are still international travelers who are not allowed to enter the U.S. based on presidential proclamations. Foreign nationals who have spent time in these countries in the last 14 days before travel cannot enter the U.S.: China, Iran, United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, and most of Europe. U.S. citizens who travel to these countries can return to the U.S. through 15 airports according to the CDC. 1268

The Democratic National Committee is eyeing eight American cities for its 2020 Democratic National Convention, a party official tells CNN.The DNC sent requests for proposals to a host of cities and received responses from eight: Atlanta; Birmingham, Alabama; Denver; Houston; Miami Beach; Milwaukee; New York; and San Francisco."The DNC sent the original letters of interest to a broad list of cities that have traditionally been able to meet the preliminary requirements for serving as a host," the official said. "We expect the entire selection process to play out over the next year."The site of the convention often serves as either a symbolic representation of where the party hopes to perform well in the presidential run or an area that represents certain values the party is looking to project.The official also said the party will consider event facilities in each city, transportation options and hotel accommodations.The Republican National Committee plans to announce its 2020 convention site by the end of summer, committee leaders told members earlier this month.The Republicans have kept quiet about the cities they are considering. But Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale has signaled interest in his hometown of San Antonio, and The Charlotte Observer reported that Charlotte, North Carolina, had presented a bid to the RNC.The Democrats held their 2016 convention in Philadelphia. While the selection is considered an honor and a boon for business, it is also regularly a logistical nightmare.Some of the cities being considered by the Democrats would be repeat hosts, including New York, which has hosted five times, most recently in 1992.Atlanta hosted in 1988, Denver hosted in 1908 and 2008, Houston hosted in 1928, Miami Beach hosted in 1972 and San Francisco hosted in 1920 and 1984. 1826
