BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The vice foreign minister on Thursday hailed Vice Premier Li Keqiang's official visit to Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea as "very fruitful," calling it a major diplomatic activity of China with the South Pacific region.     Li's official visit to the three countries from Oct. 29 to Nov.5 was of great significance to the development of friendly cooperative relations between China and the three nations, He Yafei said.     CONSOLIDATING POLITICAL BASIS OF BILATERAL TIES     He said that, during the visit, Li met with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and they reached important consensus on the development of China-Australia ties.     Both sides agreed to view their relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective because the importance of China-Australia cooperation is becoming increasingly prominent.     They also agreed to respect and take into full consideration the core interests and major concerns of each country, properly handle sensitive issues and strive to promote sound, steady growth of bilateral relations, He said.     Australia reiterated its respect for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a joint statement was released by China and Australia to strengthen their practical cooperation for mutual benefits.     During his visit to New Zealand, Li met with Prime Minister John Key and Deputy Prime Minister Bill English. During Li's visit, the two countries signed two cooperation agreements in telecommunications.     Before and during Li's visit, Australiat approved the application by China's Yanzhou Coal Mining Co., Ltd to acquire full ownership of Felix Resources Ltd.     Australia also approved China's Baosteel Group's second-version application for investing 285 million Australian dollars to acquire a 15-percent stake in Aquila Resources, an Australian coal and iron ore producer.     During his visit, Li and New Zealand leaders agreed to continue to implement the free trade pact between the two countries, and to expand the scale of cooperation in trade and economy.     The two countries signed a series of cooperation agreements on food security, inspection and quarantine and Chinese workers seeking temporary jobs in the island nation.     The leaders of Papua New Guinea said they were willing to advance cooperation with China in some traditional areas such as agriculture, forestry and fishery as well as in energy and resources.     During Li's visit, the two countries signed agreements on economic and technological cooperation as well as on preferential loans.     ENHANCING CULTURAL EXCHANGES     Li also reached consensus with leaders from the three nations on further enhancing friendly cultural exchanges and cooperation and promoting people-to-people links in such fields as education, culture and tourism.     The Chinese delegation endorsed plans with the Australian side for the Year of Australian culture in China in 2010-2011 and the Year of Chinese Culture in Australia in 2011-2012.     Li also said that China would provide a pair of giant pandas to Australia within the year for research purposes.     China signed MOUs with Australia and New Zealand on education and cooperative training programs during Li's visits, and also established a Confucius Institute with Canterbury University in New Zealand.     The Chinese leader also pledged assistance to the three nations in their participation in Shanghai World Expo in 2010.     PROMOTING MULTILATERAL COOPERATION     All three nations spoke highly of China's positive efforts and constructive role in dealing with major issues such as the global financial crisis and climate change.     Li agreed with the leaders from Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea to further promote negotiation, coordination and cooperation in coping with major issues and in multilateral organizations such as the United Nations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.     DEEPENING UNDERSTANDING OF CHINA     In his speech to Australian industrial and business leaders, Li made a comprehensive introduction of China's stand and achievement in countering the global financial crisis.     He made clear China's sticking to a path of peaceful development and its adherence to a strategy of opening up that is mutually beneficial.     Li also advanced a three-point proposal on consolidating the China-Australia relationship, which included observing China-Australia relations from a strategic perspective, promoting pragmatic bilateral cooperation in trade and the economy based upon the two countries' complementary strengths, and advancing cultural exchanges in a harmonious and friendly fashion.     The Chinese leader also conducted extensive exchanges with government leaders, managers from enterprises, institutions of higher education, research bodies and media during his visit.     According to He, Li's visit to Papua New Guinea was a show of China's positive attitude toward strengthening relations with Pacific island nations.     China and the Pacific island nations share many common interests and are firm supporters of each other in various major global and regional issues and in international organizations such as the U.N., He said.     China's relations with the Pacific island nations have developed rapidly in recent years, and constitute an important part of China's relationship with other developing countries, He said, adding that two-way trade volume reached 1.76 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.     He said China has been providing a series of economic and technical assistance to countries having established diplomatic relations with China in the region.     China has helped them in infrastructure construction, sent professionals to the region to help develop their economy and carried out numerous training programs, He said.     All those efforts are strong proof that the development of the relationship between China and the Pacific island nations is beneficial to all and has a promising future, He said.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China issued a directive Friday that aims to promote renovation of the substandard dwellings in the country's urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines, in a move to improve the livelihood of low-income people.     Renovation of squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories should be completed in the next fives years, according to the directive posted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on its website.     Priority should be given to "the shanty towns covering large areas and with severe safety defects," according to the ministry.     It also urged relevant departments to give full respect to the rights and interests of the people living in substandard dwellings, who are mainly low-income laid-off workers, and to ensure that renovating work be conducted in an open and fair way.     The directive put forward multiple ways to finance the renovation work, including government funds, favorable loans from financial institutions, and tax rebates.     By the end of 2008, China had 11.48 million families living in substandard housing, 7.44 million of which lived in cities, 2.38 million near state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.

ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China views Ethiopia as its major economic and trading partner in Africa, says Minister of Commerce Chen Deming on Monday.     The bilateral trade volume reached a historical high of 1.376 billion U.S. dollars during the first 11 months of last year, up 12.4 percent over the same period of the previous year, said Chen, adding that China's imports from Ethiopia during that period rose 202 percent to over 200 million dollars.     During his talks with Sufian Ahmed, Ethiopia's minister of finance and economic development, the Chinese minister said China's investment in Ethiopia had accumulated to 138 million dollars in areas like textile, daily necessities, machinery, glass, building materials and leather.     By the end of November last year, Chinese firms in Ethiopia had accumulated a turnover of engineering contracts with nearly 4 billion dollars, said Chen, who arrived here on Monday for a two-day visit.     Chen put forward a four-point proposal on further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation: First, further expanding its imports from Ethiopia through the use of tariff-free policies; Second, strengthening cooperation in investment and engineering contracts and continuing to encourage strong Chinese firms to invest in Ethiopia; Third, fully implementing the eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa; Fourth, further promoting cooperation in official development assistance to support Ethiopia's infrastructure, and projects aimed to improve people's well-being.     For his part, Sufian expressed his thanks for China's long-term official development aid to Ethiopia.     The Ethiopian minister said trade deficit with China has improved significantly and China has become Ethiopia's biggest trading partner.     Sufian spoke highly of China's eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa, saying that Ethiopia would work together with China to fully implement the measures.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.
